The 48th edition of the Swiss festival spans two weeks at some of Montreaux's most prestigious venues
Switzerland's esteemed Montreux Jazz Festival has announced the lineup for its 48th edition, and there's an impressive mix of old masters, modern buzz artists and an awful lot in between.
The festival runs April 4 through 19, spread across several venues in Montreaux, Switzerland: Auditorium Stravinsky, Montreaux Jazz Club, Montreaux Jazz Lab and more.
The biggest A-listers are playing in the Auditorium Stravinsky and there are plenty to go around: Pharrell Williams, Outkast, Stevie Wonder, Robin Thicke, Damon Albarn, Van Morrison and Mavis Staples. Across the smaller venues, noteworthy performers include Passenger, MGMT, Goldfrapp, London Grammar, Lykke Li, Earl Sweatshirt, Mac Miller, Banks and Ed Sheeran. A full lineup is available here.
Tickets for each artist's performance are sold separately and they aren't cheap. Each ticket for Steve Wonder's Auditorium Stravinsky performance sells for 450 Swiss Francs, equating to about $507. A ticket for Outkast's Auditorium performance is going for 350 Swiss Francs, or $394. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, April 4.
Claude "Funky" Nobs, the festival's late founder, had long been trying to book Stevie Wonder for Montreux and this year's lineup finally realizes that dream. Nobs died following a ski accident in Jan. of last year.
"We tried to get Stevie many times," festival director Mathieu Jaton told Reuters. "This time we made a collective offer through the International Jazz Festival Organisation, along with Istanbul and North Sea in Denmark."
Last year, Montreaux Jazz Fest featured headliners like Prince, Leonard Cohen, Green Day, Bonnie Raitt and Kraftwerk.
