BC America’s sci-fi series Orphan Black debuts its second season in a little over two weeks. The show’s first season came seemingly out of nowhere and quickly developed a devoted following, as well as introducing the world to the mega-talented Tatiana Maslany.

BBCA and Space (who air the series in Canada) have slowly revealed details about the plot of season 2 over the past few months. The first teaser was maddeningly unhelpful, with a subsequent 30-second spot at least showing off new footage. A full-length trailer finally gave fans a sense of what’s in store, plot-wise, and now we have an even longer, more coherent sense of Season 2′s story arc. Check out the trailer above.

For those of you just now joining us, Golden Globe nominee Tatiana Maslany stars as Sarah Manning – and also plays Beth Childs, Katja Obinger, Alison Hendrix, Cosima Niehaus, Helena and Rachel Duncan. At the beginning of the first season, Sarah encountered Beth moments before the latter committing suicide, and while assuming Beth’s identity, Sarah discovered that she is one of many clones, all products of something called Project LEDA.

After fighting for survival against deranged clone Helena, who had been killing off some other clones at the behest of a mysterious religious group, Sarah came face to face with Neolution, the organization somehow be responsible for the clones’ existence. After refusing to cooperate with “Proclone” Rachel Duncan, the season 1 finale ended with Sarah’s daughter Kira missing.

This new trailer draws a line in the sand, with Sarah, her foster brother Felix (scene-stealer Jordan Gavaris) and Cosima – the brilliant PhD microbiology student – on one side (presumably aided by soccer mom clone Alison), with Rachel and the returning Dr. Leekie (Matt Frewer) on the other. The Neolutionists are evidently aided by the late Beth’s observer-boyfriend Paul (Dylan Bruce). Time will tell where newcomers Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), Michelle Forbes (The Killing) and Patrick J. Forbes (Suits) fit in.

One plot point now in the foreground is the respiratory illness Cosima suffers from, and how Rachel and Leekie plan to withhold treatment until Sarah and the other clones come to heel. With her daughter missing and her foster parent Mrs. S (Maria Doyle Kennedy) clearly knowing more than she’s saying, Sarah will likely have to weigh her love for her daughter against her sense of devotion to her fellow clones.

This combination of science gone haywire and impossible moral choices is part of what made Orphan Black‘s first season well worth viewing.
