The Russian owners of Helsinki, Finland's Hartwall Arena are facing visa bans and asset freezes following Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine
U.S. sanctions against a Russian-owned arena won't stop Miley Cyrus' Bangerz Tour from getting to Finland in June.
According to Reuters, a concert promoter confirmed that Cyrus and several other American pop stars will be allowed to play shows in Helsinki's Hartwall Arena, despite U.S. sanctions against the venue's Russian owners.
"The sanctions will not have an impact on Hartwall Arena nor our business there," Live Nation Finland chief executive Nina Castren says.
The schedule for Hartwall Arena lists at least four U.S.-based acts that have events in the near future, including Nine Inch Nails on May 8, Justin Timberlake on May 12, Aerosmith on May 30 and Miley Cyrus on June 1.
Following Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine, the United States placed sanctions (including asset freezes and visa bans) against close allies of Russian president Vladimir Putin. This included venue owners Gannady Timchenko (a Russian oil trader) and brothers Boris and Arkady Rotenberg. Timchenko and the Rotenbergs' company in Finland, Arena Event Oy, purchased a stake in the arena last year.
The Hartwall Arena is Finland's largest entertainment venue.
The White House announced the sanctions on March 17, saying they would "seek to hold accountable individuals who use their resources or influence to support or act on behalf of senior Russian government officials." Timchenko and the Rotenbergs were added to the list of individuals three days later.
