While checking out the digital prices on PSN, I noticed that nothing has really changed price wise since the launch of the PlayStation 4. FIFA 14 and Need for Speed Rivals are still sitting at a staggering R899 with Knack and a variety of other launch titles sitting at R799… Granted these are top of the range titles, according to some, but they have already run their course and in my opinion need to drop in price.
Even taking a glance at the US PSN store, launch titles are still sitting at around 60 Dollars, which is around still pretty high in my opinion. So when will a price drop happen? Well, hopefully soon! I’m not saying that these prices should drop because I say they should, but they should drop due to the fact that they are launch titles and should have dropped in price a few months after release and not half a year later. Additionally, with no trade-in value, shouldn’t digital titles cost less? Granted there is the convenience of not having to get up and go to the store to purchase the game, but there is still the cost of the data you are using to download a digital title.

According to a staff member at one of the local gaming stores, physical copies were reduced in price within 6 months of release. However, this ultimately depended on how popular the game is and how much stock is available. While digital stock is pretty much unlimited, shouldn’t the publishers look at dropping the price sooner rather than later in order to pull consumers towards digital? Wouldn’t this technically drive more sales?
What are your thoughts? Too soon for a price drop or should this have happened a long time ago? Let us know in the comments section below.
I would have included the Xbox One in this article, but it has yet to launch in South Africa and I do not particularly know the official price list for the launch games.
