When HBO announced that it would be adapting Tom Perrotta’s novel The Leftovers into a television series, there was every reason to think that the show could become just the latest in the network’s long string of celebrated original programming. After all, showrunner Damon Lindelof was attached to the show from the beginning – and while Lindelof’s storytelling decisions on films like Prometheusand television series like Lost have proven divisive for some, the fact remains that his projects tend to find an audience.

Earlier this year, HBO gave the show’s launch a solid marketing push, playing off of the mysterious event that kicks the series’ status quo into gear. Although it hasn’t brought in record-breaking ratings, The Leftovers has remained a steady performer for the network. Now it seems that the show’s future is secure, at least for now.

HBO has just announced that it has renewed The Leftoversfor season 2. The show takes place following the sudden disappearance of 140 million people, focusing on a group of small-town residents who must grapple with what this event means and why they were left behind. With a solid marketing push behind it, the show – which stars Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman and Christopher Eccleston, among others – hasn’t proven to be a hit of Game of Thrones proportions, but regardless, it seems that HBO is investing in its ability to continue to build an audience.

Arguably, HBO has often given its shows a greater chance to prove themselves than other networks; considering the team the network has in the cast and crew of The Leftovers, it makes sense that the network would give it a chance to grow. Its premise – and the questions it raises – lend themselves to a more character-focused tale, and that kind of depth takes time (and multiple seasons) to truly realize its full potential.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that Leftovers will overstay its welcome, causing the quality in storytelling to become tired and inconclusive (as some fans accuse Lost of becoming in its later seasons). However, at this early stage, there’s no reason to cut The Leftovers short just yet. Here’s hoping that the series continues to deliver on its fascinating setup.

Are you excited that The Leftovers is returning for season 2, or should HBO make room on its schedule for other, more promising series? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

The Leftovers airs Sundays at 10pm on HBO. The season 1 finale airs September 7, 2014.
