Kim Dotcom Doesn’t Want to Reveal His Fortune

The New Zealand entrepreneur is back in court in attempt to keep the details of his fortune a secret from several Hollywood movie studios. Kim Dotcom is a founder of the now defunct file-sharing website MegaUpload and is now facing extradition to the United States over alleged copyright infringement. Dotcom is now in the court of appeal, trying to overturn a high court ruling that requires him to disclose details about his worldwide financial assets.

The court order came after the movie studios filed a civil suit in the United States against Kim Dotcom, where they claimed over $79 million for copyright breaches. Apparently, the movie studios are worried they might not get all the wanted money because Kim Dotcom was spending it. According to media report, Dotcom wasn’t saving indeed. Everyone could notice his spending of at least NZ$3.5 million that he donated to the Internet party in the lead-up to the general election, as well as a NZ$5 million bounty put up for data on the United States and New Zealand governments.

In the meantime, Kim Dotcom’s attorney, Tracey Walker, told the appeal court in New Zealand that the court order to disclose the financial assets that belong to Dotcom was in the nature of a fishing exercise, claiming that there was no justification to seek such an order just to understand whether they should freeze assets or not. It must be noted that Kim Dotcom’s New Zealand funds are already subject to a foreign restraining order. The latter was put in place in the aftermath of his arrest almost 3 years ago.

Dotcom’s lawyer said that the Hollywood studios need no application to freeze his assets, because the existing restraining order was extended a few weeks ago. Now the court hearing is set down for a day, and the chances are that judges will reserve their decision.
