Chris Hemsworth in Dundee commercial

Just a few weeks ago, it emerged that a fourth Crocodile Dundee movie would be arriving later this year: Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home, starring Danny McBride as Brian, the American son of Paul Hogan's character. But looking at the previews for this new Dundee movie, something didn't feel quite right about it, and sure enough, it was eventually confirmed that this was actually an elaborate lead-up to a Tourism Australia commercial that aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday. So alas, Dundee will not actually screen this summer, but Chris Hemsworth, who was McBride's co-star project for the project, would be open to participating in an actual Crocodile Dundee reboot. The Thor: Ragnarok star said:

While shooting, Danny McBride and I spoke about if it could be a movie. We started to get worried that if this commercial is as good as we hoped it's going to be, people are going to be disappointed, we're going to have to make a movie. But I had so much fun making this commercial, I'd definitely be open to discussions about it.

Initially anxious about how this Dundee Super Bowl ad would be received, Chris Hemsworth mentioned how he's found the response to be "incredible," so he'd be willing to participate in a legitimate Dundee movie if approached. As he informed Newsbeat, he watched the original Crocodile Dundee movie many times during his childhood, so no doubt taking part in a full production would be fun, especially if he was able to interact with Paul Hogan, as the two of them shot their parts of the commercial on separate days. This is all provided that the new Crocodile Dundee story is well-written, as Hemsworth continued:

If we could find the right story and script we might do it.

In this Dundee "movie," Chris Hemsworth played Wally Jr., the son of John Meillon's Walter Reilly from the original Crocodile Dundee movies who is the head of his father's outdoor touring company and knows the Land Down Under like the back of his hand. Had this been a real movie, the two of them would have gone looking for Mick Dundee, who was lost in the Outback, but as the advertisement continued, it became clear that this was just a way to show how Australia makes an excellent vacation destination. The videos leading up to the ad also featured cameos from Hugh Jackman, Margot Robbie, Russell Crowe, Ruby Rose, Isla Fisher and Liam Hemsworth, among others. Ideally a few of them would be game to make appearances in a real Crocodile Dundee movie, but there are no guarantees.

If a new Crocodile Dundee movie is actually greenlit, we here at CinemaBlend will be sure to let you know about it. In the meantime, you can plan your trips to the theater this year accordingly by looking through our 2018 release schedule.
