In New 'Tully' Trailer, Charlize Theron Reaches a Motherhood Breaking Point

Director Jason Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody's third collaboration is set to hit theaters April 20.


Director Jason Reitman has already made films about an adult woman clinging to her teens (Young Adult) and pregnancy (Juno). In his upcoming film Tully, he tackles a new stage of growing up: motherhood.


In the latest trailer for the pic, which dropped Tuesday evening, Charlize Theron's exhausted young mother character, Marlo, reaches a breaking point in her domestic life after spilling breast milk, dropping a cellphone on her baby and getting body-shamed by her two young children. Though she's initially hesitant to invite a "night nanny" into her home, Tully (Mackenzie Davis) provides a necessary sounding board and emotional support.


"I hold a baby all day and then nighttime rolls around and I'm supposed to just switch gears like, 'Hello, all sexy now,'" Theron says in voiceover. "Your twenties are great. But then your thirties come around the corner like a garbage truck at 5 a.m."


"You're convinced that you're this failure, but you actually made your biggest dream come true," Davis counters in another moment.


Tully marks Reitman and screenwriter Diablo Cody's third collaboration (they previously worked together on Juno and Young Adult) and the second time that Theron and Reitman have worked together (they previously collaborated on Young Adult).


In THR review of the film at the Sundance Film Festival in January, critic John DeFore wrote, "[T]he often-very-funny picture entertains while affording its characters their share of no-laughing-matter concerns."
