Ahead of the new episode airing tonight and the season one finale next week, FOX has announced that its freshman medical drama, The Resident (starring Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp), has been renewed for a second season.

Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment at Fox Broadcasting company, said: “Amy, Todd and all the producers on The Resident set out to create a medical show that viewers haven’t seen before — to peel back the curtain and reveal the truth of what happens, both good and bad, behind the scenes at hospitals across the country. Clearly, they’ve succeeded. Matt, Emily, Bruce, Manish, Shaunette and the show’s entire cast have turned in consistently heartfelt performances, and we are so excited to go back to Chastain Memorial for another tremendous season.”

The series is currently averaging more than 10 million multi-platform viewers per episode, and it improves its year-ago time period by 31% in the key Adults 18-49 demographic.

In season one’s all-new penultimate episode of The Resident, “Run, Doctor, Run,” airing tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on FOX, Conrad (Matt Czuchry) and Devon (Manish Dayal) race against the clock to save the life of a woman who is deteriorating fast from undetermined symptoms. Meanwhile, Bell (Bruce Greenwood) must remain calm when Austin (guest star Malcolm-Jamal Warner) impulsively pulls him into a procedure. Then, tensions rise as Nic (Emily VanCamp) continues her search for evidence to incriminate Lane (Melina Kanakaredes), but must simultaneously tend to her sister, Jessie (guest star Julianna Guill), who is rushed into the ER.

The Resident is a powerful new medical drama focusing on the final years of a young doctor’s training that rips back the curtain to reveal the truth of what really happens, both good and bad, in hospitals across the country. Starring Matt Czuchry (The Good Wife), Emily VanCamp (Revenge), Manish Dayal (Halt and Catch Fire), Moran Atias (24: Legacy), Merrin Dungey (Big Little Lies) and Shaunette Renée Wilson (Billions) with Melina Kanakaredes (CSI: NY, Providence) and Bruce Greenwood (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Mad Men), the series’ executive producers include Todd Harthan (Rosewood), Amy Holden Jones (Mystic Pizza, Indecent Proposal), Rob Corn (Grey’s Anatomy), Antoine Fuqua (Southpaw, Training Day), David Boorstein (Level 26: Dark Revelations), Oly Obst (The Mick, Ghosted) and Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, The Bone Collector), who also directed the pilot.
