Some torrent clients allow you to prioritise the first and last part of the file (the pieces of the torrent in these sections will receive a higher priority), which allows you to preview the torrent (such as a movie clip).

The reason why you cannot stream something like a movie using the bittorrent protocol is because it prioritises pieces in random order to try and obtain the best utilization of network resources.
