Pixar's 20th feature-length animated movie The Incredibles 2 is inching closer and closer to its release date, and some early first reactions of the movie have just been unveiled. Does the long-awaited sequel live up to its 14-year-old predecessor?

Set shortly after the events of the first movie, The Incredibles 2 sees the role reversal of married couple Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson) and Helen Parr/Elastigirl (voiced by Holly Hunter), not only as crime-fighters, but at home as parents. While Elastigirl is out fighting crime, Mr. Incredible is forced to stay at home and look after the kids. This ultimately unravels a new slew of problems for the super-powered family, but according to early reviews of the movie, those problems don't have much to do with the sequel's overall quality. The Incredibles 2 also includes the vocal talents of Sarah Vowell, Samuel L. Jackson, John Ratzenberger, and director Brad Bird, who voices Edna Mode.

Early reviews of the movie have been pouring out, and the reactions are mostly positive. Managing editor of Fandango Erik Davis called The Incredibles 2 his "favorite summer movie so far this season," adding that it's sweet and hilarious. CinemaBlend's events editor Eric Eisenberg called the sequel a blast, Collider's Perri Nemiroff pointed out that Jack Jack (the youngest of the Incredibles) is a "scene stealer," and Moviefone's features editor Drew Taylor called the movie a "masterpiece." Even Scott Mendelson of Forbes, who admits to being a staunch critic against a sequel to the first movie happily expressed his enthusiasm for the movie, adding that he "would welcome an Incredibles 3 with open arms." So, despite the long wait and high expectations, Pixar's lightning apparently managed to strike the same place twice after all.

Time for some good news! Pixar’s #Incredibles2 is fantastic! Sweet, hilarious, and terrific pacing w/ a breezy story packed w/ action & heart. Adored it and the short #Bao before it. My favorite summer movie so far this season

Wow!! #Incredibles2 is a blast. It does a great job building on the characters and the world, and it's super funny and action packed throughout. I had my doubts, but was thoroughly impressed. Will go down as one of the best titles of the summer.

#Incredibles2 is such a friggin delight! Family dynamic is brilliant yet again but WOW is Jack Jack a scene stealer. And that score! More A+ work from Michael Giacchino that I’m gonna need to own.

It should surprise no one that #Incredibles2 is a flat out masterpiece — thrilling, moving and impeccably designed. Worth every second of the 14 year wait.

I spent 14 years arguing that the world didn't need an #Incredibles2 . After tonight, I would welcome an INCREDIBLES 3 with open arms.

#incredibles2 is a serviceable sequel, a fun adventure but not on the same level of the original. Jack Jack & Edna steal the show, (please tell me they are making a short film with Edna babysitting Jack Jack). Fantastic production design, another great score by @m_giacchino.

However, with sweet comes the (slightly) sour, as not every critic was wholly impressed with the sequel. Slash Film's owner and editor Peter Sciretta simply referred to The Incredibles 2 as "a serviceable sequel," adding that it's "not on the same level as the original." That said, he did express enthusiasm towards Jack Jack and Edna Mode, as well as the movie's score from Michael Giacchino.

Given that Pixar is a studio that has rarely released subpar movies, the positive reactions surrounding The Incredibles 2 are more or less expected. That said, Pixar's reputation isn't without some occasional faults. For example, the entire Cars trilogy include their lowest ranking movies on Rotten Tomatoes, with Cars 2 in last place with a meager 32 percent score. However, at the rate that The Incredibles 2 is going, chances are it'll be sitting pretty among the best of what Pixar has to offer.
