Ubisoft unveiled the next entry in its long-running stealth-action franchise at E3 2018 with Assassin's Creed Odyssey, which takes players back to Ancient Greece where Spartans and Athenians are at war. One of the more notable changes this time around: branching dialogue choices. Odyssey is leaning heavily into RPG elements by giving players an active role in conversations that can change the course of the campaign.

Ubisoft demonstrated an example of the game's branching dialogue system in a gameplay demo showcased during its E3 2018 press conference. This time, you can choose to play as either a male or female character. During the course of the game, you'll be presented with dialogue options when speaking with characters, and your choices will alter the story, from making or rejecting alliances to developing romances.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey takes place during the Peloponnesian War and stars Alexios or Kassandra, Spartan outcasts who have become mercenaries. Using a relic called the Spear of Leonidas, you'll be able to unlock "seemingly supernatural" combat abilities as they journey through Ancient Greece. You'll also come across a number of historical figures, including Socrates and Hippocrates.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC later this year, on October 5. It will launch in multiple editions; those who purchase either the Gold or Ultimate editions will be able to play the game several days early, on October 2.
