EA has asked GitHub to remove a fan-created remake of SimCity 2000. EA had the law on its side but to be honest, it seems like EA is being more of a cry-baby. Looking at this news, anyone can clearly envision that Electronics Arts is way more insecure than perhaps any other gaming company out there. Like a little child who won’t share his toy with anyone and cry if someone plays with it.

EA has pointed out that the assets of this quarter-century old game, SimCity 2000, are not free and using them to develop is a violation that won’t be tolerated.

Legally they are right but for a company that recently acquired mobile studio Industrial Toys and makes billions each year, shutting down a fan-remake of such a small scale feels petty.

As you may know that Sim City 2000 still receives a lot of attention, especially from nostalgic gamers looking to relive their early experiences. This is exactly why one of the fans picked it up to create a remake of SimCity 2000. What EA actually should have done was encourage such creativity at least for their old games, in fact, add legal framework so that fans could remake older games.

This would have increased more love for the game itself as well as for the company;  company that’s recognized as the worst corporation in the gaming industry.

This remake of SimCity 2000 actually received quite a lot of attention and fans were looking for to it.

What is even hilarious is the fact that EA asked the fans to purchase the game legally through the Origin platform. So this pretty much snubs every creative artist to show his love. However in legal terms EA has the right to do so but thinking of it from a broader perspective, there surely could have been a better way to handle this.
