For us fans of the Lovecraftian horror stories, an open-world game set in the Cthulhu mythos is a dream come true. Call of Cthulhu has been in development for quite a while but now is finally seeing the light of the day as it launches in Oct. 2018. In this article, we have discussed everything from plot to visuals, stealth mechanics, gameplay details, and more.

Call of Cthulhu

The role of the game would be to put players into a world filled with environments and entities to question your sanity and have a deep psychological impact on you.

Turning each corner will result in a surge of anxiety. Relying less on jump scares, the game will be more about atmospheric horror similar to the Amnesia games.

Plot

You play as a private investigator named Edward Pierce, an outsider looking to solve the mystery of the tragic events that led to the death of a whole family on Darkwater Island near Boston. The person of interest, early on, is Sara Hawkins, an artist who belonged to the family that was killed.

The game starts rather ordinary with your detective skills to be put to work. However, as you descend deeper into your own investigation, you are caught up in an ancient ritual, the ones who worship the Great Old One Cthulhu.

Visuals

The game is played from a first-person perspective which makes horror seem more personal and in your face. The atmosphere is built such that there is always a green tint or shade on every obstacle and even indoors to give a feeling of dread.

The monster designs are very disturbing and scary to point where it goes beyond the comprehension or imagination of a person. Every encounter is an eerie and chilling one.

Gameplay

The first-person perspective makes the game feel more personal and the horror is always up close and in your face.

The main cycle would be to uncover clues riddle around the world including blood trails, newspapers, bulletins, recordings, and other sources of information you can get from your environment. The other part of the cycle would involve pure survival by either running away or hiding.

The game, therefore, puts less emphasis on combat and more on approaching situations stealthily. The developers have confirmed there would not be more than a single firearm in the game, and only certain weaker enemies can go down with it. Furthermore, you will continuously have to scavenge areas for ammo.

There is also a Sanity Meter on the HUD of the game which depletes over time as you collect more disturbing evidence about the crime scene. Additionally, if you encounter something supernatural and un-perceivable in terms of common sense, then you will also lose some of your sanity.

As your Sanity Meter depletes, you encounter more hallucinations, more disturbing imagery and terrifying visions into the unknown.

Although most moments would happen in a way that your Sanity Gauge goes down in a scripted manner, some changes will only apply by your choices throughout the game. In fact, tied to the Sanity System, are four distinct endings to the game.

Going hand-to-hand with the Sanity System are the many types of Phobias that your character will develop through the course of the game. Hiding in a closet for too long may cause the protagonist to develop claustrophobia and thus make unnerving sounds that accidentally attracts enemies.

Encountering too many dead bodies may lead to necrophobia which in turn will spawn enemies that were not supposed to be there originally.

Exploring an area is also non-linear and the player is given the freedom to approach a situation, as he likes. Moreover, there would be certain skills which will decide whether you can take a particular path or not e.g. a locked door which can only be unlocked if you know how to use lockpicks

We cannot wait to play the game and let it mess with our minds, it is fun right? October 30 can’t come soon enough. This is so far everything we know about Call of Cthulhu. If there is anything else that you would like to add, let us know in the comments section below!
