[How to] Make an NFO File

Here is a tutorial for setting up an NFO output file using G-Spot, and converting it to ASCII using NFO Creator.

If you don't yet have G-Spot, you can download it here from the official website:

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/. This tutorial is based on v2.70a.

To properly set up G-Spot to export a pre-formatted analysis read-out for your files, do the following steps. This part only has to be done once.

First you need to create a custom export file. This will give G-Spot the information it needs to give you an analysis on your files. To do this, open a new Notepad file (or other simple text editor), and Copy and Paste the following:

Quote:

=================================================\ r\n

File Name: %FILE_NAME% \r\n

File Size: %FILE_SIZE% Bytes \r\n

Video Codec: %VIDEO_CODEC_TYPE% \r\n

Video Bitrate: %VIDEO_BITRATE% kb/s \r\n

QPel?: %VIDEO_MPEG4_QPEL% \r\n

H264?: %VIDEO_H264% \r\n

GMC: %VIDEO_MPEG4_GMC% \r\n

Audio Codec: %AUDIO_CODEC% \r\n

Audio Bitrate: %AUDIO_BITRATE% kb/s \r\n

Audio Bitrate Type: %AUDIO_BITRATE_TYPE% \r\n

Duration: %VIDEO_DURATION% \r\n

Frame Count: %VIDEO_FRAME_COUNT% \r\n

Frames Per Second: %VIDEO_FRAMES_PER_SEC% \r\n

Display Aspect Ratio: %VIDEO_DAR% \r\n

Frame Width: %VIDEO_SIZE_X% \r\n

Frame Height: %VIDEO_SIZE_Y% \r\n

Note: the QPel?, H264? And GMC lines will only contain data for HR.HDTV files ? you may delete those lines from the finished NFO if they are blank.

Save this new file as gspotcustomexport.txt

Then proceed to the next step.

Next, in G-Spot, click on OPTIONS then EXPORT

You will see a window called EXPORT SETUP

Make sure the following selections are chosen:

Under GENERAL - Checkmark the ENABLE EXPORTING Box, then click on Save As Default.

Under FORMAT - Choose CUSTOM, USING THE FORMAT FILE BELOW and in the BROWSE box, select your gspotcustomexport.txt file.

Under OUTPUT FILES, select ALWAYS APPEND TO SAME FILE (SPECIFY FILENAME) - then click on the Browse box, and select a path, then add export.txt to the end of your path.

After all this is complete, your EXPORT SETUP should look something like this:

wol_error.gifThis image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 552x567.gspot1dd8.jpg

Now, click OK.

Next, go into OPTIONS again, then SETTINGS

At the top, under GENERAL, make sure there is no checkmark in ENABLE FULL FILE SCAN. This just slows things WAY down and is unnecessary for our purposes. Then click OK.

Now you are ready to actually use G-Spot.

You can either Click on FILE > OPEN and select all the files you want in your read-out, or you can also Drag and Drop multiple files into G-Spot.

After that is done, hit F5 to process them all. Once that is done, the Export.txt file should pop up on your Desktop or wherever you told it go.

Your read-out file should look something like this:

Quote:

================================================

File Name: saving.grace.s01e01.hdtv.xvid.sys.avi

Frames Per Second: 23.976

If it does not look very similar to the above then go back and make sure you pasted everything correctly into your format file in the first step of this tutorial.

Remember to go back and delete the contents of the export file when you?re done so its empty for the next batch of files.

******************

NFO Creator is a little free program to convert your G-Spot export file to ASCII. When you upload your pack you?ll see a place to upload the NFO.

You can download the program here and then install it.

To use ? once your NFO text file contains all of your G-Spot data and looks just like you want it ?

Start NFO Creator

File | NFO Import ? choose ?.txt? in the ?Files of Type? dropdown list ? navigate to wherever your text file is ? select the file and choose ?Open?

Check the box that says ?No Convertion? and choose ?Start Importation?

Voila, you will see your text file contents in ASCII. Since some of the text characters may not have imported correctly, carefully scroll through and replace weird characters with what you want. Common culprits are apostrophes and quote marks.

When you are satisfied that all is well, choose File | NFO Export ? choose ?.nfo? in the ?Files of Type? dropdown list. Be sure to give the finished NFO its proper name, or at least a different name than the export file, otherwise it will export to another text file instead of an NFO file.

to make a good nfo the scene way you'll need to spend a bit of time, especially with ascii..

If you want to make 1 quickly just make a text file with notepad, type the info you like and save, then change the .txt extension to .nfo
