Caribbean Premier League: Steve Smith models bowling on Shahid Afridi

THERE was no surprise when Steve Smith turned in a “heyday” performance to claim man-of-the-match honours in the Caribbean Premier League.

Except he did so as an all-rounder.

Smith was tossed the ball in the seventh over and went on to claim figures of 2-19. It would have been three if his Barbados Tridents teammate held an outfield catch.

The 29-year-old revealed after the match that a Pakistani, white-ball legend was responsible for his overnight bowling transformation.

“I’ve changed a few things. I’m trying to base my action off Shahid Afridi actually and try and bowl quite fast and into the wicket,” Smith said.

Leg-spinning all-rounder Afridi averaged almost one wicket per white-ball appearance, taking 493 wickets in 497 matches spanning three decades.

His trademark style saw him charge towards the wicket off a short run-up and bowl a flatter trajectory than most conventional leg-spinners.

Smith, serving a 12-month international and domestic cricket ban for his part in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal, said he chose to model his bowling on Afridi’s action to generate greater momentum.

“As I’m getting a bit older, I can’t walk in anymore and bowl as fast as I need to, so I’ve got a bit more momentum through my run-up so I can get the ball down a bit quicker, otherwise it just goes miles,” he said.

Smith said his spell was “heyday stuff”, but doesn’t plan to continue bowling regularly.
