Not the souvenir you'd first think to keep...

Rami Malek has revealed the weird item he kept from the set of the new Queen and Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Malek plays frontman Mercury in the film, which is released today (October 24) in the UK and on November 2 in the US.

Speaking to the New Yorker, the actor said he had kept a set of false teeth that were modelled on Mercury’s that he had had to wear during filming. “I had the teeth cast in gold,” he said. “It is the most ostentatious thing I have probably ever done, and, in the spirit of Freddie, being as outlandish as I could, I said, ‘What would be more him than casting these in gold?'”

The star has also spoken out about whether he views the musician he portrayed as a gay icon. In an interview with Into, Malek said: “What’s really great about him is he never wanted to, or thought of himself, as being boxed into anything. He just was.

“I’ve heard him say, when asked, he says ‘I’m just me.” If he’s an icon to one there’s no reason that it requires another adjective.”

Malek’s co-star Lucy Boynton, who plays Mercury’s friend and former fiancée Mary Austin in the film, responded to claims that Bohemian Rhapsody “straightwashes” Mercury.

“It’s when people want to have something to criticise that is kind of jarring, especially because it does and the one thing that we’re so proud of with this film is that I don’t feel it ever steps over the line into any kind of expose or intrusiveness,” she said of the “frustrating” comments.
