The drummer revealed his ambitions to make a solo album earlier this month

Arctic Monkeys‘ Matt Helders has spoken again about his plans to release a solo record, describing the music he’s been working on as “like a John Carpenter kind of thing”.

The drummer revealed his ambitions to make a solo album earlier this month but said he wanted to “make a lot of music” first to justify its existence.

Speaking to KEXP, the musician has now given more details about what he’s been working on so far. “I’ve got a little studio set up at home now that, when I’m there, I can commit some time to,” he said. “That’s basically old drum machines and synthesisers – a bit more electronic and a bit more like soundtrack-y, like a John Carpenter kind of thing.”

He continued: “There isn’t really a goal for what it will be yet. I’m just trying to drop in the tools in case, whether it’s a score or a record or what. I’m just enjoying it as a hobby and, when that leads to something, I think that feels a bit better for me when it’s, like, just something I wanted to do and have interest in.”

He added that the project might not even lead to anything and that he is “open to suggestions” when it came to collaborations. “If it sounds like fun I’ll consider it,” he said.

Outside of Arctic Monkeys, Helders has worked with Iggy Pop on his ‘Post Pop Depression‘ album and has taken an interest in photography.

In terms of his day job, he and his bandmates released their sixth album ‘Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino‘ in May. In a four-star review, NME said: “‘Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino’ will reward deep-diving listeners – in particular, those with an interest in picking apart Turner’s densest and most self-aware lyrics to date.”

The band are among the artists rumoured to be headline Glastonbury 2019, while they’ve also been tipped to top the bill at Reading & Leeds next year.
