Netflix Developing The One Adaptation From Misfits Creator

A brand new series based on John Marrs' The One is in the works over at Netflix with Misfits creator Howard Overman tapped to write and executive produce. This will mark the second project from the British television writer for the streaming platform having created Crazyhead, which initially premiered on E4 back in 2016 in the United Kingdom and then internationally distributed by Netflix.

Set in the near future, The One entertains the idea that one can find their life-long partners solely based on their DNA. The concept quickly becomes the fad around the world with millions of people partaking in the procedure in the hopes of finding their perfect match. The book, however, focuses on five individuals as they gear up to meet their respective true loves. But what was supposed to be the fairytale ending many are hoping for ends up tragically as the downsides of the futuristic way of dating start to emerge.

Announced on Netflix's separate Twitter account exclusively for upcoming projects, The One adaptation will also be executive produced by Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy for Urban Myths Film (same studio behind Overman's Crazyhead). Meanwhile, Studio Canal partners up with Urban Myths Films for the upcoming series which will consist of 10 episodes. Check out the official announcement through social media below:
 

 

Not much is known with regard to how Netflix will tackle the source material, but judging on people's response on the book itself, it has been generally well-liked with a four-star rating on Good Reads, as well as a four and half star-grade on both Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Most reviews cite its fresh narrative and well-executed plot twists, making it hard to put down. Despite being set in the future, the fact that it's rooted in the grounded nature of dating and marriage can make it appealing for those who aren't necessarily into dystopian-set stories.

The One will join Netflix's growing sci-fi series like Stranger Things, Black Mirror and Altered Carbon but unlike said shows, it will also offer something slightly different with its romantic plotlines an integral part of the narrative. This year, the streaming giant has had quite a few hit romantic comedy movies spearheaded with their biggest one yet, To All The Boys I've Love Before, which is an adaptation of Jenny Han's best-selling young adult novel. But they have yet to try their luck regarding serialized storytelling with love-centric narratives. With an interesting premise and an established fan community, the streaming giant may have another hit on the way.

No official release date has been set for The One as it appears to still be in the early stages of development.
