  8. Disco Ball Tutorial I saw few Illustrator tutorials in the web, but i didn’t really like the final image, so I had to think and find the right way for drawing a more realistic disco ball… If you are interested, please see below the instruction :) Create a New Document and then create a rectangular shape (I choosed ~ 175*175px). Fill it with bright radial gradient. Rasterize your image. In the top menu go to Object-Rasterize and just clik “ok” not changing anything there. Then enlarge your square a bit (~150%) Now go to the Filter-Create-Object Mosaic and play with numbers there. I choosed: Tile spacing = 1px for both width and height Number of Tiles =30 (again for both) Check ‘Delete Raster’ box. Now we’ve got a nicemosaic. Reduce the size of the image back to the 175*175p Select the rectangular and drag and drop it into the Symbols panel. Now create a circle (mine is ~175*175px as well), make a copy of it and delete its left anchor point with Direct Selection Tool (white arrow). We will need the full circle later so do not accidentaly delete it please. After that go to Effect-3D - Revolve. Change numbers there following the picture below, change Surface to “No Shading” and go to the Map Art. In the Map Art window in the drop down menu choose your mosaic symbol we created before. Icrease or decrease its size if necessary. Now go to the Object - Expand Appearance. So now we have to delete all rubbish from the picture. Select the shere and press Ctrl-Shift-G three times. Then click on the shere again and move it to any side. Select the rubbish and delete it. Select a circle we made before (the one we left aside before creating the 3d effect), fill it with the same radial gradient, put it underneath the mosaic (Ctrl+shift+[ ) and align them using the align panel (Shift+F7). Release Cliping Mask and Ungroup tiles (Ctrl+Shift+G). So now it’s time to use your imagination to make our disco ball looks more shiny and real. At first, lets highlight some tiles: randomly select some tiles in the lightest area of the ball; go to Live Color (Edit-Edit Colors-Recolor Artwork). Click on Edit (1), then Link Harmony Colors (2), then increase Brightness to maximum (100%) and decrease Saturation to about 30-40% or more/less (depends on your colors). Now select another tiles, go to Edit colors again and play with their colors there (make them darker or lighter… It’s better to change Brightness and Saturation only. Unless you want your disco ball looks more colorfull). Keep doing “select-edit colors” until you are satisfied with result. Now lets add some sparkles to the highlighted areas. Draw a 4 points star with the Star Tool (see numbers for use below). Scale it (~50%), copy and paste in front (Ctrl+F), rotate 90’ and scale (50%) again. Now we have a nice sparkle. Place sparkles to the highlighted area of your disco ball. Add a holder (just a simple rectangular with a gradient fill). That’s it - we’ve got an disco ball!
  9. Step 1 Create a new document. With the Ellipse Tool (L), make a circle 25px by 25px. Fill it with red and no Stroke. Step 2 Select the circle and go to Effect > 3D > Revolve. Enter the values as shown in the figure below. A Revolve angle of 180 degree is to make a semi-ring. An offset of 100pt from the right edge adds a distance between the revolve axis and the path on which the object will revolve. Step 3 Now we'll duplicate and Send to Back. Alt-drag the ring to make a duplicate copy as shown. Use Command + Shift + Left Bracket to send it back. Step 4 With the duplicate copy still selected, open the Appearance palette (Shift + F6). Double-click the 3D Revolve effect, as shown below. Step 5 In the 3D Revolve dialog box, change the z-axis value to 10 and offset to Left Edge. Keep rest of the values as it is. The two basic elements for the spring are now created. Step 6 Now we'll match the faces. Hold the duplicate copy and place it exactly behind the right face of the original one. Use the keyboard arrow keys to do so. See in the image below how this is done. Tip: Go to Edit > Preferences > General (Command + K). In the dialog box, reduce the Keyboard increment to 0.05px or even less. This is helpful in achieving more accuracy when you are shifting the objects with the keyboard arrow keys. Step 7 Select the rings and Alt-drag to duplicate. Send "ring 4" to back (Command + Shift + Left Bracket key). Step 8 Now select "ring3" and "ring 4," then match the left face of "ring 4" exactly behind the left face of "ring1." Tip: Use Shift + Arrow key for larger increments and simply push the Arrow key for normal increments. As we know, there is no way to join 3D faces in illustrator; the overall quality of the final result will depend upon your hand's precision. So, try your best to match the faces. Step 9 Follow Steps 7 and 8 to extend the spring. This can be done either by duplicating one ring at a time, or duplicating the entire set of rings. Let's do it with an entire set. Select everything and Alt-drag to duplicate. Send "ring 6" to back (Command + Shift + Left Bracket). Step 10 Now we have two sets and we have to connect them. Key logic: Match the bottom-most face of "set 2" with top-most face of "set 1". Step 11 Now we want a stretch in the spring. For this, duplicate "ring 8" by Alt-dragging, and connect it with "ring 7." Assume this as "ring 10," as we will make "ring 9" in the next step. Step 12 Duplicate "ring 7" by Alt-dragging and open its 3D properties from the Appearance Palette (Shift + F6). Change the z-axis rotation to -4, as shown in the image below. Step 13 Connect "ring 9" to the right face of "ring 10," as shown below. Step 14 Duplicate "ring 10" and change its z-axis rotation to 14. Do this by clicking on the 3D Revolve properties from the Appearance palette. Next, connect it with the left face of "ring 9," as shown below. Step 15 Following the same procedure, duplicate "ring 9," change its z-axis value to -8 and connect its right face to "ring 12." Step 16 Similarly, duplicate "ring 12," change its z-axis to 18, and connect its left face to "ring 11." Step 17 Now duplicate "ring 11" and connect its right face to "ring 14," without changing anything. Step 18 Select "rings 13" and "ring 14" together and duplicate them. Send "ring 16" to back (Command + Shift + Left Bracket). Now join the resulting rings at the left face of "ring 13." Step 19 Now duplicate "ring 16" by Alt-dragging and connect it to the left face of "ring 15." Step 20 Carefully select the rings 1, 3, 4, and 6, then duplicate them. You may need to lock some rings (Command + 2) to select the desired ones. Step 21 The final step is to connect the resultant set of Step 20 to the right face of "ring 18." The final result after successful placement shall be like this. Conclusion and Scope With this basic technique of spring formation, we can obtain creative results by simply experimenting with the rotation values in the 3D Revolve option. The only drawback with this technique is that we can not join the 3D faces. This affects the overall quality of the desired result. However, at 800px sizes, these errors are not legible and we can easily use the results in icon designing. You can try this technique in creating shock-absorbers and Spiral CFL (Bulbs). The image below shows some experiments done with this procedure. You can find the rotation values for each result in the source file. Thanks everybody for your patience and valuable time. Hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
  10. I couldn't agree with you more. Trying to inflict fear into everyone else that does this. The chances of stopping everyone from doing this is really next to nothing. I too feel sorry for her, really like where is she going to fork up that money from?
  11. Very detailed and descriptive guide, I will be sure to read it and try it when I get home tomorrow as I do not have time right now. I will let you know how it goes when I get back! Thanks!

  13. Connecting to a bad ed2k server can have some nasty consequences. They monitor your activities and report to anti-p2p outfits. They direct you to non-existent files, corrupted fakes and hide files which others genuinely want to share. Learn how to protect yourself. Millions of file-sharers use the eDonkey (ed2k) network daily with every conceivable file and media type available for download. However, for millions of users on the ed2k network there is a threat hidden below the surface - fake eDonkey servers, estimated to be as many as 60% of all the ed2k servers currently online. These bad servers can spy on you, track your activities and report your behavior to anti-p2p companies. Others are concerned in engineering a situation to put malware on your machine. For the incomplete downloads in progress, the user’s ed2k client asks all the servers configured in its server list to find additional sources but of course, if you connected to a bad server it now knows everything that has been happening in your client - a major privacy breach. Fake servers are also there to misdirect, to cheat, to confuse. “Simply put, those servers lie. And they do a lot of it.” explained qm2003 from eMule-Project. “When a client is searching for something, fake servers will return files and sources to files that are actually non-existent, empty or garbage.” Furthermore, files being offered for share by users connected to a fake server will not show up in search results of queries made by other users, effectively starving the network of millions of files. “Some fake servers deliberately return results with supposedly thousands of sources to prematurely end searches” explains qm2003, “And to make matters worse, those search results contain malware that will infect the system of any client downloading and executing those files.” The problem of connecting to fake servers is actually something built into the standard eMule installation as the default settings result in the adding of fake servers to the server list. Probably due to legal considerations, this situation is not seriously dealt with by the developers but there are steps which can be taken now to improve the situation; 1. In eMule go to Options/Server 2. Set number of errors allowed before removing the server to 9 3. Click Edit button that appears next to the option Auto update 4. In Notepad, that is opened, add the following lines in the beginning: http://www.gruk.org/server.met.gz http://peerates.net/peerates/certifiedservers.met http://peerates.net/peerates/trueservers.met 5. Save changes in notepad 6. Unmark the two following options Update list of servers 7. Click on Accept 8. Go to servers window 9. Remove all servers from static list 10. Remove all servers from list 11. In Update Server.met from URL, write any of the URL in point 4 above. 12. Click on Update button 13. If you have selected Autoconnect only to servers on the static list, add the servers you want to the static list 14. Double click on any server We reported on the value of Protocol Obfuscation (BitTorrent users will be more familiar with the term Protocol Encyption.) and it is of some use to this situation. To date, no spy/fake servers support obfuscated connections, so enabling it in the options of eMule 0.47C rules out the current possibility of connecting to a bad server. However, as we pointed out in the earlier article, this method does carry the side effect of not being able to connect to non-eMule clients, versions of eMule before 0.47b (which do not support PO) and other clients with PO switched off. Taking the above steps will drastically improve your chances of avoiding a bad server. Tune in next time when we cover the issues surrounding spy/fake/poisoning clients and current counter-measure techniques.
