It took the actions of a bearded man who controls many people with just one word – Ridley Scott, that is, not God – to unseat The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 from the top spot at the US box office as Exodus: Gods And Kings swept into the charts across the pond according to studio estimates.

Despite some mixed reviews and the controversy over its casting choices, Scott’s latest came out of the gate strong (though perhaps not as huge as 20th Century Fox might have liked) with $24.5 million in the States, and more than $74 million worldwide to date, as the new cinematic take on the Moses story opened in several international territories alongside its Stateside arrival. It’s not quite shown the same opening power as fellow Biblical tale Noah, which arrived to $43.7 million earlier in the year, but it’ll have to prove it has similar legs.

Katniss and co. fell to second place, adding $13.2 million for a $277.3 million total in the US to date. Those Penguins Of Madagascar also got knocked, falling to third with $7.3 million. The only other wide release new entry was Chris Rock’s latest, the critically lauded Top Five, which landed at fourth with $7.2 million, a close call which could see it trading places with the Penguins when the final figures arrive. Rounding out the top five was Disney’s Big Hero 6, which made $6.1 million and is now past $185.3 million in the States.

Interstellar was pushed to sixth, adding $5.5 million to its total, while Horrible Bosses 2 took a tumble from third to seventh, earning $4.6 million. Fellow comedy Dumb And Dumber To was down to eighth place with $2.7 million, with The Theory Of Everything slipping two places to ninth on $2.5 million and Reese Witherspoon drama Wild hiking into the top 10 after expanding its release, earning $1.5 million.

To see Pharaoh exiling Katniss Everdeen in the full chart listings, head to Box Office Mojo.

Word that Legendary was working on King Kong tale Skull Island arrived to a slightly muted response when a teaser trailer arrived at this year’s Comic-Con, probably because everyone initially thought it was a first glimpse at Jurassic World. Legendary and its Universal partners are trying to make sure people know what it’s all about in future, announcing that the film is now to be titled Kong: Skull Island.

With Tom Hiddleston leading a team of explorers to the titular island and likely to have a run in with its biggest, hairiest occupant, the film is currently in development with John Gatins rewriting a script first drafted by Godzilla’s Max Borenstein.

The Kings Of Summer’s Jordan Vogt-Roberts is the man calling the shots for this one, and Universal has also decided to shift the release date back a little, announcing that the freshly-retitled film will now arrive in US cinemas on March 10, 2017, a few months later than the originally planned November 2016 release. As for its arrival in the UK? Well, since the original release here was set for two days before the US launch, expect the movie some time around March 8, 2017…

  3. The launch of the first teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens focused on the newer members of the ensemble for J.J. Abrams’ film - John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac. Noticeably absent were any of the original starring trio including Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. But as Hamill explains, that was by design.

“This is about the new generation of characters; I think that’s the most important thing,” he tells Yahoo Movies. “It’s the opening act of a whole new approach to the storytelling. So I never thought that the stories would be – first of all, I never thought I’d be involved in it again, period. And then when George Lucas said that they wanted to do more, I rightly assumed that it wouldn’t be our story, because we had a beginning, a middle, and an end. This must be our offspring and the current generation, with us there lending the kind of support that Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness did in the original. So no, that didn’t surprise me. And I mean, I’m one of those people where I just think, ‘Keep me out of it. I’ll ruin it, I’m sure!’ I’ll show up and just ruin the whole thing.”

While we’re not sure we agree with that statement – who doesn’t want to see Luke Skywalker taking on more of a mentor role for the new characters, especially since Abrams made him grow a crop of face fuzz for the role? “That is what I call my contractually obligated beard,” he laughs. “Listen: I think they look fine on other people. It’s just not me. I mean, I never got used to it. But face foliage is almost a part of the costume. And it does bring a gravitas, perhaps unearned, but nevertheless, it makes a statement that they wanted to make, and I’m more than happy to oblige them.”

One of the more talked-about elements of the new trailer is the ball droid, whom we now know is called BB-8. According to Hamill, he’s not a CG creation. “They never cease to amaze me with what they’re able to come up with, you know? I said, ‘How are you ever gonna top R2-D2, the most adorable droid in movie history?’ And then they have this new one. And when they were demonstrating how they did this thing, live on set — because it’s not CGI, that’s a live prop — I was just amazed. They let me play around with it. I was running it all around at the creature shop up in Pinewood. I’m telling you, it’s an absolute delight. And not having thought that I’d ever go back there, to go back into that world, is just – I get the chills. It’s just so much fun.” For more from Hamill, head to Yahoo.

In case you’ve forgotten, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out on December 18 next year.

  4. When he’s not flinging Mjolnir around in defence of Asgard or the Earth, Thor – sorry, Chris Hemsworth – occupies himself with other films. In Blackhat’s case, he’s just at the chance to work with Michael Mann on a cyber thriller. A new look at the movie has just arrived via Yahoo.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=AtJoN68ZCf8

Hemsworth stars as Nicholas Hathaway, a furloughed hacker convict recruited by a mixed team of American and Chinese law enforcement officials as they hunt a high-level cybercrime network from Chicago to Los Angeles to Hong Kong to Jakarta. Though the network initially seems to be intent on damaging financial institutions, Hemsworth and co quickly discover that the stakes are much, much higher than that.

This new promo shows a little more of arrogant side of Hemsworth’s character, as he blithely makes demands of the agents sent to retrieve him. Of course, once he really gets a taste of what he’s up against – i.e. guns and threats, not just ones and zeroes – that attitude shifts a little.

With Viola Davis, John Ortiz, Holt McCallany, Spencer Garret, William Mapother, Archie Kao, Spencer Garrett and Wei Tang also in the cast, Blackhat is out on February 20.

  8. Merry Christmas and Happy New(Old) Site!

The first ever re-seed contest for the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015!

This holiday season we wanted to do something special for the site. We've amassed such a massive collection and we've done it at such breakneck speeds; it's awe-inspiring, and it's amazing what we've all accomplished. When we got together and thought about what we could do as a gift, of course our very first thought turned to a new type of contest.

Traditionally we've used contests to promote the growth of the archive and give everyone a chance to contribute whether it be uploading or downloading or whatever. Well, we've come up with something new.

Welcome to the first ever re-seed contest. What better gift to get than a site where you'll find less dead torrents, what better way to start a new year than with our archive as strong as possible!!

Without further ado, here's how it works:

Any body can re-seed any torrent, you did not have to be on the snatch list, just go out there and find the same file

Any torrent with a trumpable reason of "Dead (participating in the contest)" is eligible for the contest

Re-seeded torrents get bumped to the front page upon re-seeding, and they count toward the re-seeders total on the leaderboard

Any torrent that counted for the contest, but is unseeded for >48 hours when the contest ends, will be removed from the count on the leaderboard

    BUT WAIT THERES MORE!

Here at PTP we take quality seriously. We've given our Golden Popcorn Evaluation System an overhaul as part of our commitment to make sure we have a heavy focus on providing the best quality possible:

We've recruited a new GP evaluation team made up of veteran encoders
They vote on each potential GP encode, standardizing and expediting the process. This way you can be absolutely sure that if something is GP here it is the best quality encode around!

Developer Rocksteady's upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight game will get a prequel comic book which follows the events of Batman: Arkham City, DC Comics has announced.

The comic's story begins right after the events of Arkham City, as Bruce Wayne recovers from his injuries and wonders if Gotham still needs Batman to survive. "But as the sun rises in Gotham City, dangerous new threats emerge from the shadows…and the Arkham Knight is just beginning," DC said.

Unlike the previous Arkham games, titular villain the Arkham Knight isn't based on a character that appeared in the Batman fiction previously, so this prequel comic could help introduce him.

The comic book will be written by Peter J. Tomasi with art by Viktor Bogdanovic and Art Thibert. Dan Panosian will be the cover artist for the series. The first issue, on sale March 11, will include two variant covers, one by Gary Frank and the other will feature art from the game.

Arkham Knight launches in June 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game was originally targeted to launch this fall, but developer Rocksteady pushed it back to add more polish.

Microsoft has announced Killer Instinct is getting a few new items to celebrate the holiday season and more details about the 2.2 update, which adds a new fighter, Riptor.

Riptor, which Microsoft first teased last month, is a the Cybernetic Raptor created by Ultratech that has both human and reptilian DNA. He first appeared in the original game, and will be added to Killer Instinct on Xbox One when the 2.2 update is released on January 1, 2015. You can also expect a new Riptor trailer and gameplay stream on Monday.

    The 2.2 update also includes:

    • Riptor’s stage “Hatchery 09”
    • Story mode
    • Dossiers for all S1 characters (on character select screen)
    • Balance changes and fixes (2.2 changelist found here)
    • Increased character and stage loading speed
    • New character select screen icons and silhouettes
    • TJ's Retro Costume
    2758339-2012111150-Ripto.PNG

Microsoft warned that the update will be larger than usual—10GB—because you'll have to re-download improved versions of all the content packages in order to get those shorter character loading times.

Until the update is applied, you can accessorize your fighters with holiday-themed items like a Saberwulf reindeer head, TJ Combo Santa head, and Orchid's candy cane batons. You'll get the items for free if you already bought Orchid, and Season 1 and 2 Ultra Edition. If you haven't, you can also buy them individually. The items will not be for sale after update 2.2.

For more information on the Rank system remodel and Iron Galaxy's future plans for the game, check out this latest post to the Killer Instinct's official forum.

Killer Instinct shipped on the same day as the Xbox One launch, with Jago available to play for free. Players could unlock other characters and items by paying a fee.

Killer Instinct developer Double Helix was acquired by Amazon earlier this year, casting doubt on continued support for the Xbox One fighter. Microsoft claimed the game would not be affected and said that the franchise, which it owns, would continue on.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was the best selling game for November according to the NPD, but the military first-person shooter continues to decline in sales compared to recent years.

Street Insider (via Gamesindustry.biz) reports that Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson said Activision sales fell 22 percent compared to same month last year, and that Call of Duty sales specifically we're down 27 percent.

"NPD data does not include digital copies or international sales, which, if included, would lessen the decline, but we believe this data suggests potential for Q4 revenue upside is now very low," Olson said.

However, Olson added the Blizzard's strong performance with World of Warcraft and Hearthstone should allow Activision to meet its expectations for the quarter.

In November, Activision said that Initial UK sales figures for Advanced Warfare represents growth for the Call of Duty franchise, but the claim is somewhat complicated given that Advanced Warfare and Call of Duty: Ghosts shipped under different conditions.

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg also previously insisted that the purchase intent for Advanced Warfare was "significantly above" Ghosts. However, he added that preorder sales across the industry were in decline, as consumers transition to next-gen consoles.

Other analysts have indicated that Ghosts didn't sell as much as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and that Black Ops didn't sell as much as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Bungie is banning players that have been playing Destiny on modded consoles, the developer has confirmed in its most recent weekly update.

“We routinely review Banhammer actions to ensure that they are applied accurately and fairly," Bungie said. "A review of the bans applied over the last week shows that all of the affected accounts had logged into Destiny on a modified console at some point.”

Bungie didn't explicitly say that the banned users were using their modded consoles to cheat, but it's safe to assume that is the case. A quick search on YouTube will reveal several videos of players using god mode, no cooldown, infinite ammo, and increased movement speed cheats on what appear to be modded last generation consoles.

"Be careful out there," Bungie said. "Play nice! And use the boxes that your favorite retailer 'gave' you."

This Bungie weekly update also detailed how the developer is addressing several bugs that popped up following the recent release of The Dark Below expansion.

  13. empire-farewell-to-middle-earth-issue-an

Andy Serkis’s take on Rudyard Kipling’s stories, The Jungle Book: Origins is on the move. Warner Bros. has announced that the ambitious film will move from its planned October, 2016 release date into an October, 2017 slot.

You might have read in the current issue of Empire – out now and in digital formats too – about Serkis and his performance-capture facility The Imaginarium, where even now he's hard at work on the film, which will feature the voices and facial capture work of Benedict Cumberbatch, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Naomie Harris, Jack Reynor, Eddie Marsan, Peter Mullan and Tom Hollander with a blend of live-action and CG creations.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the original date was more of a placeholder for the film, and the new slot means Serkis and his team have more time to develop everything. It does, however, mean that it will be even longer between his film and Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book for Disney, which is scheduled to arrive in October next year.

Warners, meanwhile, has been quick to switch in a new title for Jungle Book’s old date: Gerard Butler thriller Geostorm will hit US cinemas on October 21, 2016 instead. There’s no word on whether that means it will show up here at the same time.

  14. star-wars-the-force-awakens-teaser-trail

Even before Disney snapped up Lucasfilm and began developing new Star Wars movies, the company’s theme parks have been representing George Lucas’s adventures in that galaxy far, far away. Now, the attractions will be evolving to focus on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and beyond.

“There will be a much larger Star Wars presence in our parks globally,” Disney boss Bob Iger said during a Variety event. “But we want to do this big, which takes time, and to do it right.” Theoretically, that might mean saying goodbye to the current likes of Star Tours – which got an update a few years ago – or simply adding more content from J.J. Abrams’ film, the other franchise episodes and the spin-offs being crafted by the likes of Josh Trank and Gareth Edwards.

The plan is to target those whose primary experience of the SW universe is from the new movie. “I didn’t want someone to say, ‘I just saw the movie and there’s nothing in that movie in this attraction',” Iger said. “We waited to see what this film would have in it.” Intriguingly, he also revealed that the company, urged by the ever mystery-conscious Abrams, almost didn’t release the new teaser trailer that has sparked such interest. But realising that the fanbase would revolt without something concrete, the director and the Mouse House relented.

In additional theme park news (lest you think Empire has suddenly become obsessed with rollercoasters) a new Paramount Pictures theme park set to be based in Kent has reached a deal with the BBC to include attractions based on the broadcaster’s biggest shows. No formal plans have been made yet, but titles already talked about include Doctor Who and Sherlock (which we can really see working, particularly Who, given the Doctor Who Experience) and, er, Top Gear. Which might be some sort of driving challenge or possibly the chance for outraged viewers to throw rotten fruit at a stocks-locked Jeremy Clarkson the next time he says something offensive. Can they have it ready for next month?

  15. jonathan-frakes-bringinriker-star-trek-3

The Enterprise helm was left deserted last week after Roberto Orci announced that he was no longer attached to direct the next Star Trek film. With no replacement in sight, Trekkies around the world mobilised to put a new name forward to continue J.J. Abrams’ new Trek legacy. With #BringInRiker trending on Twitter, fans entreated Paramount to enlist former Next Gen First Officer and veteran Trek director Jonathan Frakes for the job. After several days of this, Frakes himself has responded that he would happily accept the promotion.

In a radio interview with Komo News, Frakes assured listeners that he's "all over it". "I would love that job," he added. "I'm trying to keep the lid on how excited I am about the possibility, knowing it's such a long shot. But there's nothing I would like better."

According to Frakes, he has contacted Paramount to express his interest and is waiting on their response. Having directed numerous episodes of Next Generation, Voyager and Deep Space Nine, Frakes was also responsible for bringing the Borg to the big screen with Star Trek: First Contact, widely regarded as one of the best Trek films in the canon. He returned to direct the follow-up, Star Trek: Insurrection, which was less well received, featuring as it did F. Murray Abraham having facelifts and a re-pubescent Worf.

Frakes certainly has the experience and his impeccable Trek credentials would allay any fan worries but we can’t help but think that Paramount would see a Frakes-directed trek as a step backwards at this point, especially considering the ignominious Thunderbirds.

Also, with names like Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish being bandied around for the job it seems even less likely Riker will get his shot in this captain’s seat. Still, we're not ruling him out – he was Picard's right hand for seven years, after all...

  16. “Retired” hit men. Former special ops officers. Ex-Mob enforcers. What do they have in common? If they’re on screen, they’ve got big problems, and usually a family member or two just waiting to get caught in the crosshairs when their past comes firing back to bother them. That’s what’s facing Sean Penn in the first promo for The Gunman, arriving via Yahoo.

Penn plays Jim Terrier, a former special forces-type still haunted by the things he did when he was on active duty. And one particular mission is itching at his conscience, a job that was supposed to help people, but ended up more in tragedy than triumph.

So when he decides to expose what really happened, he becomes the target of his former fellow shooters and bosses, with the likes of Mark Rylance, Ray Winstone, Idris Elba and Javier Bardem out to get him. Oh, and his girlfriend, played by Jasmine Trinca is probably going to wish she’d never met him...

Pierre Morel is behind the camera for this one, looking to do for Penn and co what he did with Liam Neeson (though let’s face it – Winstone, Elba and even Bardem have nothing to prove with their action chops). Don MacPherson and Pete Travis adapted Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel The Prone Gunman and the film will be out on February 20.

  17. Last time some Shaun-the-Sheepery sprang online, it was in the form of the movie's first full trailer, and it arrived just as Star Wars fans were champing at the bit for the Force Awakens trailer. Today, just hours after some of the names of the characters in Episode VII were announced, here come the even-toed ungulates you love to love in the form of our exclusive Shaun The Sheep The Movie poster.

In case you don't already know - or haven't watched the trailer below - in this expanded adventure, Shaun and his pals decide to take the day off. That would be fine, except they don’t bother to tell the farmer where they’re going, causing no end of trouble and leading to the poor, put-upon bloke being carted off to the big city. Shaun and co. must travel to the confusing, chaotic city and help him out.

Shaun and his farmyard friends are usually silent (except for the occasional baa, bark or burp), so as you can tell from the trailer, this will be an exercise in a lot of Aardman’s talent for silent film comedy.

Mark Burton and Richard Starzak are the people responsible for marshalling the herd, working from their own script. We’re promised the usual sheep-powered chaos plus a few new characters, including animal warden Trumper (featured prominently in this trailer), as well as Slip, an orphan dog who helps out our heroes.

Shaun The Sheep The Movie arrives in UK cinemas February 6.
