  6. The Dutch movie industry has put forward a proposal for more active anti-piracy measures to be taken to curb unauthorized file-sharing. The local trade organization wants to monitor movie pirates, and have their Internet providers send them educational warning letters. In recent years the movie industry has been pushing hard for voluntary agreements aimed at targeting online piracy. This has resulted in arrangements with Internet providers in several countries including the United States and the UK, where unauthorized file-sharers are monitored and warned. The Dutch movie industry is now calling for a similar scheme. Traditionally the Netherlands has been one of the countries with the highest piracy rates, and without any sign of improvement the movie industry wants to take action. “Consumers should be educated. They must understand that it’s not allowed,” saysRené van Turnhout, director of film distributor Dutch Filmworks and chairman of trade association NVPI Video. The Dutch film industry is calling for a warning system modeled after the BritishVCAP initiative. This means that accused pirates are sent a series of warning letters, but without any punishments. While an agreement with ISPs is still miles away Van Turnhout already has a suggestion for what the letters should look like. Aside from alerting pirates to their unauthorized behavior, the notice should include links to legal alternatives. “We’ve found that you have tried to view films from illegal sources. Filmmakers also have to earn money to make a living. We refer you to the following legal alternatives,” is what the letter could read, according to Van Turnhout. Just how popular movie piracy is in the Netherlands became apparent last week when Popcorn Time revealed that its application is installed on 1.3 million devicesthere, trailing only behind the United States but with a population of less than 17 million people. Convincing Dutch ISPs to participate is going to be quite a challenge though. Traditionally they have been very cautious when it comes to anti-piracy measures. Earlier this year ISPs successfully appealed the local Pirate Bay blockade, which they deemed to be ineffective and in violation the their customers’ rights. The Dutch proposal is in line with increased calls for warning systems around the globe. Among other countries, Australia is also looking into it. Last week local ISPs said there’s no evidence that these schemes are effective, but that they would bewilling to consider one if the Government desires. http://torrentfreak.com/dutch-movie-industry-wants-to-monitor-and-warn-pirates-140908/

  11. Reddit users beware, the Web Sheriff is back in town, and he's coming after your submissions. In recent months copyright holders have increasingly targeted "infringing" Reddit links and the Web Sheriff is one of the most active senders. The Web Sheriff, aka John Giacobbi, has been protecting the Internet from pirates for roughly a decade. In the early days he became somewhat of a cult figure thanks to his polite style and trademarked letterhead. This set him apart from other anti-piracy crusaders who usually sent DMCA takedown requests with a more aggressive lawyer-like style. The Sheriff once had a lively discussion with The Pirate Bay folks, who then sent himthis invoice fax. Not much later relationships deteriorated even further after Giacobbi announced he would sue the site’s operators in the US, France and Sweden, but not much came of that. In recent years things have quietened down a bit, but The Web Sheriff and his deputies are still active. In recent years they have taken down over half a million URLs from Google alone. Most recently, the Sheriff has been targeting several Reddit.com pages. In one of the most recent complaints the Sheriff demands the takedown of a submission in the r/megalinks subreddit, linking to two parts of the movie Nymphomaniac hosted on Mega.co.nz. The request for removal was sent to Google last week but the search engine decided not to remove the URLs. It’s unclear why, but one reason for the inaction may be that the Mega links are no longer active. Not all links reported by the Web Sheriff are “infringing” though. Another recent submission shows that he also tried to get this submission take down, which points to a perfectly legitimate news article from Variety. This year copyright holders have increasingly targeted allegedly infringing Reddit links, Google’s data shows. The Web Sheriff is currently ranked second in number of URLs sent, placed after LeakID and before Disney. Even the MPAA went after Reddit a few weeks ago. The Hollywood group tried to take down the subreddit r/fulllengthfilms, but failed and drove hundreds of thousandsof eyeballs to the page instead. Thus far the Web Sheriff hasn’t booked any real successs either, but Reddit users are warned. The Sheriff is watching and will shoot down your submissions whenever he can. http://torrentfreak.com/oh-no-web-sheriff-targets-pirating-reddit-users-140907/

  13. The hacking trial of Gottfrid Svartholm has ended its first week, but not without controversy. Today TF catches up with Kristina Svartholm on the past few days' developments and we also reveal criticism of Danish police after information provided by a man "with a grudge" against Gottfrid was used in court. It’s been a long time in the making but this week the trial of Gottfrid Svartholm finally got underway in Denmark. The Swede and a still-unnamed 21-year-old co-defendant stand accused of hacking computer mainframes operated by US IT giant CSC in what’s being described as the largest case of its kind ever seen in the Scandinavian country. Surprise The trial began on Tuesday but after less than 25 minutes proceedings had to be halted after the prosecution submitted a 27-page document and 92 slides that the defense claimed not to have seen before. Michael Juul Eriksen, defending the 21-year-old, complained but deputy public prosecutor Anders Riisager said there was no obligation to provide all documents up front. On top of the surprise documentation, the prosecution also provided a never-seen-before video recorded by police when Gottfrid was arrested in Cambodia during 2012. It reportedly showed the Swede’s apartment messy and turned upside down. Gottfrid’s defense lawyer Luise Høj branded the video as “irrelevant” and this start to proceedings didn’t impress Gottfrid’s mother Kristina either. “Such efforts to disorder the defense and affect the jury are, in my opinion, unworthy of a civilized court process,” Kristina told TF. “I guess I am very naive in this, but I think that representatives of the community should behave better than that – justice should be considered more important and be paid more respect to than in the way that the prosecutor behaved to begin with that first day. But maybe Denmark has its own ethics in this respect.” Chat logs In presenting the case, senior prosecutor Maria Cingali referred to chat logs that took place between two hackers – one allegedly Gottfrid (My Evil Twin) and the other the 21-year-old (Advanced Persistent Terrorist Threat). A report in The Local said the logs not only contained chats discussing the hacking of CSC’s database, but also personal details that correspond with those of the 21-year-old. Remote access Speaking to the court on Wednesday, Gottfrid continued with the same defense strategy employed in his Swedish case – that third parties had access to his computer and carried out the hacking from there. The 29-year-old also revealed that he’d previously given the police four other nicknames of individuals who had access to his computer. Eraser, Nohyb, RBL and Ripley were reportedly known online as The Lattice Team but Anders Riisager wanted their real names – Gottfrid refused. “I do not want be called a traitor or a snitch,” he said, going on to criticize the efforts of the prosecution in finding the potential culprits. “The motivation to investigate has been equal to zero,” he added, pointing out that the Danish authorities had been in possession of these names since 2013. “There has been every opportunity to find out their names. You have had more than a year to do so,” Gottfrid noted. “Smear” campaign In his cross-examination, Riisager invited Gottfrid to comment on an article published on Cambodian forum Khmer440 in 2012 which claimed that the Swede was “messed up on drugs” and “a total recluse” who made contact only with “his dealers and landlord.” The Swede reacted unfavorably, accusing the prosecution of trying to “smear” him. Someone who shares opposition to these allegations is ‘John’, Gottfrid’s former business partner as revealed in our earlier article. He’s outraged that the prosecution has used information penned by someone with “a grudge” against Gottfrid. “I should inform you that Khmer440 has accepted that many of the allegations posted about me and Gottfrid were false and defamatory. I have it in writing (the term they used was ‘scurrilous’,” John wrote in an email yesterday to Jens Jorgensen of the Danish police. “The fact that you have quoted these libelous, provably false accusations written by a man who you know to have a grudge against Gottfrid (and I know that you know, because I personally told you about it during our meeting, and watched you take notes) is absolutely sickening. I can’t imagine what on earth possessed you to do such a thing.” Did the prosecution edit evidence? Something else bothering the defense is the authenticity of chat logs provided to the court. The names “Advanced Persistent Terrorist Threat” and “My Evil Twin” were seen in chat logs provided by the prosecution yet on Internet Relay Chat, where the chats allegedly took place, names with spaces are truncated. This, the defense says, indicates the logs had been modified. “The prosecution makes much of the two names. But if you log into this kind of IRC chat with the name ‘Advanced Persistent Terrorist Threat,’ you will just be called ‘Advanced,’ because you cannot include spaces. It simply cannot be done to be called ‘Advanced Persistent Terrorist Threat,’ so it’s been changed subsequently,” Michael Juul Eriksen argued. Lost in translation Speaking with TF yesterday, Kristina said that while Gottfrid is in good spirits, earlier in the week her son “lost his temper” with his interpreter over technical terms not being relayed correctly. “Gottfrid and his lawyer have complained about this earlier in court, several months ago – and now this happens again,” Kristina said. “Denmark should use its best interpreters in a task like this – and the interpreters themselves should refrain from accepting to do the job it if they feel that they can’t do it well.” By Friday morning, however, things had improved. “I just saw a report that Gottfrid and [his new interpreter] smiled at each other when she tried to translate some technical terms,” a good sign, Kristina believes. The week ends in more drama The cross-examination of Gottfrid’s co-defendant had been due to begin Friday afternoon, a highly anticipated event since to date the 21-year-old has refused to give any comment to the police. But thanks to the prosecution producing yet more evidence that had not previously been shared with the defense, the court would have to wait. Defending the 21-year-old, lawyer Michael Juul Eriksen said he couldn’t let the questioning go ahead until the information had been read by the defense. The trial continues next week. http://torrentfreak.com/gottfrid-svartholm-trial-starts-ends-week-in-controversy-140907/
  14. In an effort to educate American kids on copyright, the MPAA and RIAA are backing a new copyright curriculum titled "Be a Creator." Starting at kindergarten, children are educated on the value of copyright, and after a public outcry last year, the final materials now include fair use principles too. Almost a year ago we questioned a new initiative from the Center for Copyright Information (CCI). The group, which has the MPAA and RIAA as key members, had just started piloting a kindergarten through sixth grade curriculum on copyright in California schools. The curriculum was drafted in collaboration with the California School Libraries Association and iKeepSafe, who aim to teach kids the basics of copyright. The lesson materials were rather one-sided, however, often ignoring fair use and the free-to-share copyright licences Creative Commons provides. These concerns were later picked up by the mainstream press, creating a massive backlash. Responding to the critique the CCI and other partners were quick to state that it was just a pilot and that the final materials would probably be more balanced. Glen Warren, vice president of the California School Library Association, acknowledged the problems and suggested that the early drafts were coming straight from the content industry. “We’re moving along trying to get things a little closer to sanity. That tone and language, that came from that side of the fence, so to speak,” Warren commented. This week, TorrentFreak spotted the final version of the curriculum and it’s clear that the public outcry for more nuance has paid off. Instead of focusing on enforcement and the things people can’t do with copyrighted content, it now emphasizes that sharing can be a good thing. Creative Commons licenses are discussed in detail and every lesson plan also informs students about fair use. For example, in the old second grade lesson plan the teacher was supposed to say the following sentence: “You’re not old enough yet to be selling your pictures online, but pretty soon you will be. And you’ll appreciate if the rest of us respect your work by not copying it and doing whatever we want with it.” While the above paragraph ignores the fact that some people are happy to share their photos with flexible Creative Commons licenses, it has been completely removed from the final version. The sentence “we recognize that it’s hard work to produce something, and we want to get paid for our work” has been completely stripped from the lesson plan too. Instead students are reminded that “the projects they created are fun / informative / respectful, and so they may want to share them online.” The sixth grade lesson material has also been thoroughly updated, as well as the accompanying video which doubled in length to explain fair use. The changes become clear by comparing the old “purpose” and “key concepts” with the new one. Below is a copy of the old text, with no reference to fair use and Creative Commons licenses. Old And here’s the new and improved version, with these two concepts included, and without the strong focus on consequences for “illegal use.” New Another positive change is that instead of warning students against using copyrighted images and music from the Internet in Powerpoint presentations, they are now told that this is totally fine, as long as the material is only shown in class. Similar changes have been made throughout the entire curriculum, which is now much more balanced than the rather strict and biased view that was presented before. There’s still one question that lingers in the back of our mind though. Would the curriculum have been as balanced as it is right now if we hadn’t pointed out the problems in the first place? http://torrentfreak.com/mpaa-and-riaa-teach-copyright-in-elementary-schools-now-with-fair-use-140906/

We were suffering from DDoS attack for the past 2 days, the dedicated 100Mbit/s bandwidth of the server was fully raped, leaving no bandwidth for the site to run properly, that's why the site was extremely slow from September 3rd. From what I know, the attack was not intended just for our site, we are just unlucky, being one of the attacking IP range. In order to avoid or limit future attack, we have purchased CloudFlare service to protect the site. You might see no seeders/leechers for any torrents, don't worry, just don't delete any torrent, it will be sorted out asap, the server needs time to recover everything. Just be patient while we are working on it. Thanks for your support!
  17. The alleged operator of a sports streaming site who was arrested on behalf of the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit has been charged with numerous offenses including copyright infringement, conspiracy to defraud and money laundering. TorrentFreak can today reveal the names of the sites involved. The Intellectual Property Crime Unit operated out of City of London Police were once again flexing their muscles this week with yet another raid in the UK. PIPCU, as the unit is known, teamed up with police in the north of England to swoop on what is being described as a major sports streaming operation. Early Monday, some 200 miles away from London, officers teamed with police in Manchester to raid a property in Cheetham Hill. Their target was an unnamed 27-year-old said to be providing access to subscription TV services. In their announcement, police used terms including “industrial scale” to describe the size of the operation after seizing 12 computers servers and other equipment. Police withheld the arrested man’s name and the sites involved. The streaming operation shutdown on Mondaycredit Yesterday, however, Zain Parvez of Cheetham Hill Road, Manchester, appeared before Manchester magistrates court charged with running the operation that was shut down earlier in the week. Things certainly don’t look good for the 27-year-old. Not only has Parvez been charged with offenses under the Copyright Design and Patents Act 1988, he also faces allegations of money laundering, conspiracy to defraud and possessing or controlling an article for use in fraud. In respect of the names of the sites Parvez allegedly controlled, the pieces have been coming together all week but with no straightforward way of joining the dots. We can now confirm that the domains involved are CoolSport.se, CoolSport.tv and KiwiSportz.tv. As can be seen from the Alexa data below, CoolSport.tv dropped off the radar in July with Coolsport.se immediately taking over, a domain switch that was announced on the site’s Twitter account. Parvez, who has been in custody since his arrest, will be further detained until heappears before Manchester Crown Court on September 16. This week’s arrest is the third involving a streaming site in the UK. Although the sites in previous actions were not announced by police, TorrentFreak previously revealed that the operator of BoxingGuru.co.uk, boxingguru.eu, boxingguru.tv and nutjob.eu was arrested during April in the north of England. http://torrentfreak.com/police-throw-the-book-at-alleged-pirate-site-admin-140906/

  19. Tom Cruise’s IMF agent Ethan Hunt returns in Mission: Impossible 5 next year, and he’ll be accompanied by at least one new coworker – played by Rebecca Ferguson(The White Queen) – along with old friends like tech specialists Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg). However, we’ve yet to hear anything about who the villain will be this time around – prior to today, that is.Mission: Impossible movie villains, truth be told, tend to not get a whole lot of screen time, as most of it goes to Hunt and/or his IMF team performing incredible tasks. So, in that respect, there doesn’t seem to be much reason for concern about the fifth installment having not yet firmly nailed down an actor to play its antagonist, even with production being already underway. According to Deadline, Sean Harris has been approached to take on the Mission: Impossible 5 villain role. Harris is known to many as the panicky geologist Fifeld in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, though he’s been acting for twenty years now; in that time, he’s amassed a noteworthy body of work that includes a role in the Red Riding movie trilogy, along with more recent roles on the TV show The Borgias and supernatural horror/crime procedural Deliver Us From Evil (which released back in July). Deadline is cautioning that Harris is only in negotiations to join the Mission: Impossible 5 cast right now. However, with all his upcoming films – including the Jennifer Lawrence/Bradley Cooper period drama Serena and a version of Macbeththat stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard (featuring Harris as Macduff) – either finished or currently in post-production, there shouldn’t be any scheduling issues that would prevent Harris from reaching a deal. The first four Mission: Impossible films were each directed by a different filmmaker – and had their own unique flavor as a result – and the fifth installment won’t break away from tradition. Helmer duties this time around are being handled by Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie, who previously co-wrote a pair of Cruise-starring films – the WWII drama/thriller Valkyrie and this year’s time-traveling/alien invasion thriller Edge of Tomorrow – and wrote/directed the Cruise-headlined Jack Reacher. McQuarrie, who is drawing from a screenplay written by Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) and Will Staples (the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 video game) on Mission: Impossible 5, may offer a take on the property that recalls Brian de Palma’s first installment – or perhaps something that calls back to the grittier chase/action films of the 1970s (think The French Connection). We’ll see, though. Mission: Impossible 5 opens in U.S. theaters on Christmas Day 2015. http://screenrant.com/mission-impossible-5-villain-actor-sean-harris/
  20. The citizens of Starling City haven’t had much peace and quiet since millionaire playboy Oliver Queen returned from the dead and took up a life of vigilantism. The CW’s hit comic book adaptation Arrow has already introduced plenty of heroes from the DC universe, but it’s introduced plenty of villains as well – and there are more to be expected (both old and new) in the upcoming third season. Among the new gallery of bad guys is Simon Lacroix AKA Komodo, played by Matt Ward (TRON: Legacy), who can be briefly spotted in the new trailer for Arrow season 3, standing atop a rooftop and getting ready to fire an arrow of his own. It’s just as well that more villains are arriving, since the trailer also suggests that the start of the new season will find Oliver keeping the crime of Starling City more or less under control. He and his allies (including Roy Harper, newly kitted out in his Arsenal costume) seem to be working as a well-oiled team, but are they well-oiled enough to take on Ra’s al Ghul? The trailer isn’t all about fighting, however; it also reminds audiences that this season of Arrow will cater to ‘Olicity’ fans by sending Oliver out on a date with his lovably awkward tech expert Felicity Smoak. Speaking of awkwardness, the trailer features a bit of banter between the lovebirds that’s been more or less directly lifted from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We’d offer points to anyone who can spot it, but it’s quite hard to miss. One issue that has been raised on the show previously is that Oliver Queen’s weapon of choice, as high-tech as it might be, is still somewhat anachronistic in the 21st century – especially when he’s facing off against enemies with machine guns and explosives. In the last season Oliver got a chance to try out Black Canary’s staff, and in this trailer he branches out once again and actually uses a gun against some military opponents. Apparently desperate times call for desperate measures. When he’s not wearing his trademark hood, Oliver will also have to face off against a new business rival, Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), in the fight for control over Queen Consolidated. Unfortunately that’s probably not a problem that can be solved by just firing a bunch of arrows. Arrow returns to The CW on Wednesday, October 8th, 2014 @8pm. http://screenrant.com/arrow-season-3-trailer-high-speed-chase/
  21. Australian character actor Joel Edgerton has made a real name for himself in the States over these past few years, starting with his performance in the Australian crime drama/thriller Animal Kingdom. Edgerton recently wrote the story for The Rover – Guy Pearce’s post-apocalyptic crime/drama that released in theaters earlier this year – and he penned the script for another Australian film project: Felony, the upcoming cops/crime morality tale, which also features Edgerton as the headliner. Felony, as the above trailer illustrates, revolves around Malcolm Toohey (Edgerton), a detective who’d recently been celebrated for his heroism, when he accidentally hits an under-age bicyclist with his car – leaving its young rider in a coma – and does not confess to the act. Malcolm thereafter finds himself being investigated by one detective, even as another one does his best to make sure the evidence cannot be traced back to the publicly-respected Malcolm. Question is, just how far will these three men go, in order to either hide or expose the truth? Edgerton’s costars in Felony include Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard), Tom Wilkinson (Belle), and Melissa George (The Good Wife), while the movie was directed by Matthew Saville – whose previous work includes the feature Noise as well as the TV series Please Like Me. Felony has been touring the film festival circuit over the past year, beginning with the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. The Australian production has thus far been generally well-received - as indicated by the critical excerpts in the trailer – having been praised by the likes of Variety‘s Ronnie Scheib for being a “stylish psychological thriller,” while The Australian‘s Stephen Romei calls it another “smart, sophisticated” addition to the recent slate of Australian crime genre films. Edgerton’s next major tentpole appearance will be in director Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, where he plays Moses’ adopted brother, Rhamses. However, it sounds as though Felony is a strong showcase for not just Edgerton’s acting prowess, but also his abilities as a storyteller behind the camera. Next up, Edgerton the feature-length film director? Felony will be available for viewing on iTunes starting September 16th, 2014, before it begins a limited U.S. theatrical release a month later on October 17th. http://screenrant.com/felony-trailer-joel-edgerton/
  22. There will be a handful of movie comedy sequels arriving in theaters during the last two months of 2014; that list includes Horrible Bosses 2, a followup to what was, back in 2011, a surprisingly popular laughfest in the shape of Horrible Bosses. Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis have reunited onscreen for this secondBosses installment, while screenwriting duties were taken over by Sean Anders and John Morris (who also co-wrote this fall’s Dumb and Dumber To). Anders and Morris’ Horrible Bosses 2 script, judging by the film’s teaser and the film’s newly-released full-length trailer (watch it above), is not a re-invention of theHorrible Bosses wheel, but it’s not a Hangover Part II-style rehash either. There’s even a bit of meta-humor in the latest trailer, when Jamie Foxx’s Dean “MF” Jones tells off the Bateman, Day, and Sudeikis trio for pretending to be“happy-go-lucky guys” every time they perpetrate a crime (a different, but related joke to Ice Cube’s “Do the same thing!” bit from 22 Jump Street earlier this year). Indeed, as the new Horrible Bosses 2 trailer lays out, the plot this time involves a kidnapping scheme rather than attempted murder – as Bateman, Day, and Sudeikis decided to work together and start their own business, but wound up getting cheated out of their money by an unreliable investor (Christoph Waltz). This inspires the trio to capture their crooked investor’s son (Chris Pine) and hold him for a ransom – a plan that, in some respect, goes smoother than expected when the son decides he wants in on the deal with his kidnappers (as the new trailer reveals). CLICK FOR FULL-SIZE VERSION Certain elements featured in the Horrible Bosses 2 trailer marketing arguably work better than others. The chemistry between the film’s three leads remains intact, though it does feel as though some of the callbacks to the first movie (see: Jennifer Aniston’s character’s return) may come off as more forced than others. In fairness, though, that might not be so much of an issue in the actual movie. There’s also the question of direction; Anders called the shots on the Horrible Bosses sequel, but his previous efforts as helmsman (Sex Drive, That’s My Boy) aren’t so encouraging. Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon didn’t exactly have a perfect record either (see: Identity Thief), but he brought good timing and solid visually-oriented punchlines to the first movie. We’ll just have to wait and see how Anders measures up on the sequel. Horrible Bosses 2 opens in U.S. theaters on November 26th, 2014. http://screenrant.com/horrible-bosses-2-trailer-poster/
  23. Vin Diesel’s voice helped to breathe life into Groot – one of the more beloved characters from Marvel Studios’ latest hit Guardians of the Galaxy – but next year, he’ll be back on the big screen in person as Dominic Toretto in Fast & Furious 7. It looks as though that might not be the only Diesel-starring film to hit theaters in 2015 either, as his fantasy adventure The Last Witch Hunter (a project that’s been slowly developing for some 3-4 years now) recently started production. Last Witch Hunter will star Diesel as an immortal, well, witch hunter – who, in the present, teams up with a witch played by Rose Leslie (a.k.a. Ygritte on Game of Thrones) to stop a coven based in New York City from unleashing a plague upon humanity. Diesel’s been attached to the project for a while, but Leslie only joined a couple months back – as did most of the other cast members, like Elijah Wood (Wilfred), Michael Caine (Interstellar), and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (A Walk Among the Tombstones). Diesel, per his custom, has kept his Facebook followers up-to-speed on development of Last Witch Hunter; he posted conceptual art for the movie earlier this year, andtoday revealed that filming is underway – by putting up a photo of himself in costume for the film (see below), with the comment “13th century Kaulder… The Last Witch Hunter begins…” Based on that, one presumes the following image doesn’t reveal how Diesel’s character will be dressed during sequences of Last Witch Hunter that are set in modern times. (Then again, in a place like NYC, a guy who looks like this might not even get a second glance from most of the locals that pass him on the street, so who knows…) Director Breck Eisner (Sahara, The Crazies) is calling the shots on Last Witch Hunter, while drawing from a script that was penned by Cory Goodman (Priest) and subsequently revised by Oscar-nominated scribe Melisa Wallack (Dallas Buyers Club). Combine that with an action-driven storyline that involves Riddick and Ygritte battling witches, and it seems fair to say – Last Witch Hunter might not be a home run, but it has the potential to be a solid piece of popcorn entertainment nonetheless. As for when Last Witch Hunter will hit theaters – Summer 2015 is pretty full (even August), but a September or maybe even October launch next year – to tie in with the Halloween season – might be on the books for the film. Admittedly, competition is lighter in September 2015 right now, as Universal’s survival thriller Everest is the only movie aimed at a similar crowd as Last Witch Hunter – and the Diesel-ledRiddick did alright during the same frame last year too – but best to wait and see on that one. We’ll let you know when The Last Witch Hunter gets an official release date. http://screenrant.com/vin-diesel-last-witch-hunter-images-casting/
  24. A golden age of comic book movies may be dominating Hollywood right now, but over the past few years there have also been signs of an effort to turn around the thus-far lackluster genre of video game-turned film adaptations. Major developer and publisher Ubisoft has set up its own film studio, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, and has multiple adaptations of major franchises in development; there have also recently been rumor-mongering that Activision-Blizzard is interested in following suit. One company that already straddles the border between video games and movies is Sony, and an adaptation of classic PlayStation 2-era game Shadow of the Colossushas been in development at Sony Pictures for years. Highly praised for its outstanding art direction and simple but effective story, Shadow of the Colossus is about a young man called Wander who appeals to a mysterious and powerful entity to restore the life of a girl called Mono. The entity demands that Wander first slay sixteen colossi – enormous, ancient beings that dwell in different corners of a forbidden land – and the game is based around these sixteen battles. Chronicle director Josh Trank has been attached to Shadow of the Colossus since 2012, but things have been extremely quiet on the news front lately. This isn’t exactly surprising, since Trank only recently finished filming the Fantastic Fourreboot and will soon be moving on to one of Disney’s planned Star Wars spinoff movies. Whether Trank has lost interest in Shadow of the Colossus or whether his full schedule is simple making it impossible to commit to it is unclear, but THRreports that Sony has now moved on – and has tapped Andres Muschietti (Mama) to direct the adaptation. Hanna screenwriter Seth Lochhead, who joined the project last summer, is still attached and is now writing the screenplay with Muschietti supervising. Another mainstay throughout the film’s development thus far is producer Kevin Misher, who is backing the film under his Misher Films banner. Misher’s previous credits includeIt’s Kind of a Funny Story and The Scorpion King, while Muschietti is coming off his feature directorial debut with Mama (after first directing a short film of the same name). As with any video game adaptation, there are going to be challenges when it comes to turning Shadow of the Colossus into a film. The game’s narrative is very simple with minimal dialogue, and the simplicity of the story is arguably what helped to make the game such a powerful experience. It wouldn’t be surprising if the film adaptation ends up having a hefty dose of extra plot added in. With the right writer and director a Shadow of the Colossus movie could definitely make for great cinema, but are Lochhead and Muschietti the creative team needed to make it work? Moreover, when will Shadow of the Colossus manage to drag itself out of development hell and onto the big screen? Only time will tell for certain… We’ll keep you updated on Shadow of the Colossus as development continues. http://screenrant.com/shadow-colossus-movie-director/
  25. Ben Affleck’s busy at the moment, as he’s portraying middle-aged Bruce Wayne in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (which is currently in the midst of production), but the Oscar-winning actor/filmmaker already has plans to get back into the director’s seat after he’s done. The next project on Affleck’s agenda isLive by Night, a film adaptation of the period/crime novel by Dennis Lehane (author of Mystic River and Shutter Island) that will feature Affleck as the writer, the helmsman, and, as it were, the star. Deadline is reporting that Affleck has found stars to play the three female leads in his new Lehane book-turned movie (the second he’ll have directed after Gone Baby Gone). The list includes Sienna Miller – who will appear in two already buzzed-about 2014 awards season contenders during the months ahead (namely, Foxcatcherand American Sniper) – along with Zoe Saldana (who can currently be seen on the big screen playing Gamora in the Marvel hit Guardians of the Galaxy), and Elle Fanning (Maleficent) – who snagged a role said to have been “particularly coveted.” Miller will be costarring in Live by Night as Emma, a woman who falls in love with protagonist Joe Coughlin (Affleck) – the son of a Boston Police captain in the 1920s – early on in the story, despite being the girlfriend of Joe’s mobster boss. Saldana is playing Graciella, a woman who shows up later in the story when Joe’s rising career as a member of the Prohibition-era criminal underworld sees him travel to Florida. Last but not least, Fanning also plays a key role in the narrative (eventually), as Loretta – the daughter of a sheriff and an aspiring actress who, as Deadline simply puts it, “gets into trouble.” Zoe Saldana and Elle Fanning have been cast in ‘Live by Night’ Affleck went international with his Best Picture Oscar-winner Argo, but Live by Nightwill bring him back to his roots in Boston – the backdrop for his first two directorial efforts, Gone Baby Gone and The Town, as well as the setting for his Oscar-winningGood Will Hunting script (co-written by Matt Damon, of course). There ares still some key differences between Live by Night and Affleck’s past Boston crime stories – such as the historical setting and how the story ultimately takes place in multiple places on the U.S. east coast (as mentioned before). Live by Night was delayed by a year from its originally-scheduled release date, due to Affleck’s Batman V Superman commitment – and it’s not clear yet just howJustice League will fit into his upcoming work schedule. By now, however, it has been well-established that Affleck is a talented storyteller and filmmaker; meaning,Live by Night ought to turn out to be a solid period crime genre tale, at the least. The caliber of the supporting cast that Affleck’s assembled for the movie is testament enough to that, on its own. Live by Night opens in U.S. theaters on October 7th, 2016. http://screenrant.com/live-by-night-cast-zoe-saldana-sienna-miller-elle-fanning/
