Kickass Torrents, The Pirate Bay in midst of shutdown by MPAA, ESA; File-sharing site Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and Entertainment Software Association (ESA) in full force with The Coalition for Online Accountability (COA) to shut down file sharing sites, like The Pirate Bay, Kickass Torrents and Torrentz. This move is in line with the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) of 2011 to penalized organizations that violate copyright laws. COA is made up mostly by the recently affected MPAA, ESA, Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA). The alliance is aimed at shutting down file-sharing sites including the popular The Pirate Bay, Kickass Torrents and Torrentz. They want to seize their domains as found guilty infringing copyright regulations. It seems like the COA is revisiting the main provisions of Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in 2011 which failed after it sparked widespread outrage and opposition among internet users. The previous move made by MPAA, however, was snobbed by the torrent sites including The Pirate Bay and Kickass Torrents. In fact, they remained resilient against threats by the MPAA. But will the file-sharing sites stay adamant from COA's latest agenda? Meanwhile, it seems like file-sharing sites like TPB has an advantage for Swedish government after all. While the Swedish court is deciding to give it's verdict on the torrent site, they will have to thank the site for making their country known globally. Latest report revealed that TPB is one of the iconic companies that made the country known in the whole world. Apart from the file-sharing site, IKEA, H&M, Volvo, Skype and Spotify were also included. The Pirate Bay has gathered around tens of thousands of headlines focusing on Sweden. Key pirate bay domains must be seized, court rules In a decision handed down minutes ago the Stockholm District Court has ordered two key domains owned by The Pirate Bay to be seized. While the ruling means that the site will lose its famous ThePirateBay.se domain, don't expect the site to simply disappear. TPB informs TorrentFreak that they have plenty more domains left in store. In keeping with a global strategy to disrupt the operations of unauthorized file-sharing sites by attacking their infrastructure, Swedish authorities have been eying two domains operated by the notorious Pirate Bay. In 2013, Prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad, the man behind the operation that took the site down in December, filed a motion targeting ThePirateBay.se (the site’s main domain) and PirateBay.se (a lesser used alternative). Filed against Punkt SE, the organization responsible for Sweden’s top level .SE domain, the case reasoned that since The Pirate Bay is an illegal operation, its domains are tools used by the site to infringe copyright. Noting that Punkt SE supplies and controls the domains and is therefore liable for their (mis)use, the domains should be dealt with in the same way that other criminal tools would be, Ingblad argued. Punkt SE, on the other hand, took the position that holding a registry responsible for infringement has no basis in law. Furthermore, disabling domains is an ineffective way to deal with infringement. After two years preparation the case was heard at the end of April 2015 and just a few minutes ago the decision was handed down. After a week-long delay the Stockholm District Court ruled that The Pirate Bay will forfeit its Sweden-based domains – ThePirateBay.se and PirateBay.se. As countries fight for prominence on the international stage, being recognized among trading partners and the global general public is an important part of the battle. For example, London imagery and the royal family are powerful overseas marketing tools for the UK while superstar movie and music icons ensure that United States branding is funneled into hundreds of millions of overseas homes every single day. In Sweden the government has its own agency tasked with understanding overseas cultures and promoting Sweden and Swedish issues globally. Founded in 1945, the Swedish Institute has approximately 140 employees. This morning the Swedish Institute made an appearance at the Swedish consulate in Istanbul as part of a Curators of Sweden event discussing freedom of expression, the Internet and democracy. As part of a slideshow the organization highlighted a number of Swedish brands responsible for raising Sweden’s profile on the world stage.
