  1. 8 The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Nick Broomfield (Photo illustration: Yahoo News / Photos: Lionsgate, Getty Images) Twenty-one years ago, British documentarian Nick Broomfield made Biggie & Tupac, in which he suggested that the unsolved murders of feuding rap legends Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G. had both been planned by Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight in cahoots with the Los Angeles Police Department. In 2021, Broomfield returned to the scene of the crimes, so to speak, with Last Man Standing: Suge Knight and the Murders of Biggie and Tupac; that film alleged that critical information had been deliberately suppressed by the LAPD during the Biggie Smalls investigation, and featured testimony from witnesses who claimed to have seen LAPD officers at the site of Smalls's drive-by murder, the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. Of course, since Last Man Standing's release, there’s a been stranger-than-fiction plot twist in this great hip-hop mystery: 60-year-old former South Side Compton Crips gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis (alternatively spelled as "Keefe D"), the last living suspect in the 27-year-old Shakur murder case and the uncle of early Tupac murder suspect Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, has finally been charged with Tupac’s 1996 shooting death. Davis, who appeared in court on Nov. 2 and pleaded not guilty, will stand trial starting on June 3, 2024. One might assume that Broomfield in planning a third Biggie-Tupac film in light of this bombshell revelation, but he tells Yahoo Entertainment with an emphatic shake of his head, "Oh, no, I couldn't stand it! Life's too short; I've already done two on that. But somebody else should definitely follow that one up." And, as Broomfield points out, this story is far from over, because the "much bigger," "more politically revealing," and still-unanswered $500 million question is: "What happened with Biggie?" We sat down with Broomfield as he processed his thoughts about Davis's indictment... and about what might happen next in the Smalls case. 1. So, the obvious first question is: How do you feel about Duane Davis being charged with Tupac's murder, after all these years? I think it's really interesting. I mean, everybody knew about Keffe D, because Keffe D was coming out and saying he'd done it. He gave that interview to that LAPD officer [Greg Kading], because he was a drug dealer, and they said, "Give us some information about that murder and will lessen your drug sentence." He told them this at least 10 years ago. The question I've always wondered was, why did it take them 10 years to charge Keffe D, when he'd already admitted to it before that he was in the Cadillac, that he'd supplied the murder weapon, and so on? And I've always felt the reason they didn't was because the big question — the much bigger question — is, who was behind the murder of Biggie Smalls, the retaliatory murder? And once they've kind of solved the Tupac one and charged somebody, the next questions will be: So, what happened with Biggie? Who was behind Biggie? Is it true that there were LAPD police officers moonlighting for Death Row Records? Who coordinated the hit? Was it [Rafael] Perez and David Mack [two corrupt Los Angeles cops] and the other guy who were behind it? Were their police radios used? … That's the next question, the more politically revealing one. And that's always been the thing I've been most interested in. 2. Do you think Keffe D's arrest and upcoming trial will lead to finally getting answers about the Notorious B.I.G.'s murder as well? Well, I think it would be good if it did. I mean, it depends an awful lot on the LAPD, the police chief, and whether it's easier just to let it show that now they're open and accountable, and yes, let's close the book on this and let's get it over and done with. Or maybe when the people who are no longer alive … it's all so political, that whole side of things. And American politics are so crazy at the moment that I don't know which way it will go. You can see that the hit on Biggie was a very well-orchestrated hit, with a line of bullets going across. It was a proper hitman, whereas the one with Keffe D and his nephew was just a sort of gangbangers: bullets everywhere, 30 bullets in the car. It's a miracle Suge Knight didn't get hit; I think he got nicked. I spoke to people who identified David Mack and Rafael Perez at the Petersen Automotive Museum, somebody who actually trained David Mack. He was an athlete before, and she was one of the trainers. And she said, "I know I saw David Mack at the Petersen Automotive Museum that night." And of course, they all denied being there. Yeah, there were some photographs — and the photographs suddenly mysteriously disappeared. It was a very weird case. And then, do you remember Bernard Parks [the Los Angeles Police Department chief from 1997 to 2002]? His daughter was then found to be [allegedly] involved with David Mack. It was all a big, big mess. … The LAPD was already fined a million dollars for withholding information knowingly when [the Notorious B.I.G.'s mother] Voletta Wallace brought that [$500 million] case against the LAPD — which is significant. It is significant, and I think there was a real cover-up of that murder. A lot of information has been withheld. At some point, it will come out. 3. After all of the time and energy you've spent investigating Biggie and Tupac's deaths, what sort of mixed feelings do you have, knowing that closure might finally be possible? Well, really, it was just a big, big, horrible, sad mess. … The two of them were such amazing artists. Like, Tupac got a scholarship to the Baltimore of School of the Arts, which is a hard place to get into. He was unbelievably talented. Biggie, too, was a student at top of his class. Neither of them were in any way "gangsters." They were the opposite, really. Voletta Wallace was super-strict. She's referred to as "Ms. Wallace," and she was a very respected, wonderful woman, really something. Tupac was anything but a gangster, and he became intoxicated with this fantasy that Suge Knight was living. Suge wasn't a gangster either, but he had grown up in Compton with tough people, and he had a fantasy about being a gang member. And he surrounded himself with all these Bloods who… well, nobody really benefited from any of it. I mean, the guys who running around with Suge, they all lost family members, like [former Sugar Knight capo] Mob James. All these people I talked to lost family members. No one made any money; half of them are just living in same old house in Compton. Tupac, who had this sort of fantasy of being a gangster — who was never really accepted by them, of course, anyway — lost his life by not knowing that Orlando Anderson was a hitman for the rival gang. If you take on a hitman, he's going to kill you, otherwise he's not going to be respected by his own gang. So, that was going to happen. It's a particularly bleak story of extraordinary talent being wasted on nothing, on Suge Knight's fantasy of this gangster life he wished he'd had growing up. Read more from Yahoo Entertainment:
  2. Aqua in 2023. (Gudmund Thai/Sofie-Broeng) Aqua’s René Dif, Lene Nystrøm, and Søren Rasted were on a flight from their native Denmark to San Francisco, to play the first date of their current U.S. tour, when the 66th annual Grammy Awards nominations were announced earlier this month. Upon landing, they received a very surprising group text from their manager. “All of a sudden it pops up and goes: ‘Congratulations, guys! You are nominated for two Grammys!’ And I went, ‘What the f***?’” a chuckling Dif tells Yahoo Entertainment. “A lot of different feelings go through your mind. Is it real? Is it not real? It’s the most impossible thing when you’re young, thinking it would be nice to stand up there or just be nominated, but it was so far from reality at that time. But then, 26 years later, it apparently happened.” The Europop band’s first-ever Grammy nods — Song Written for Visual Media and Best Rap Song, for Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s Barbie soundtrack hit “Barbie World,” which heavily samples Aqua’s 1997 signature song “Barbie Girl” and credits Aqua as co-writers — cap off what has been an unexpectedly amazing year for the group. Of course, the Barbie movie has elevated Aqua’s profile — but this unlikely renaissance predates and goes way beyond that. “I don’t think anybody’s going to go to an Aqua concert just because of a Nicki Minaj song, but we have a lot more monthly listeners because of the movie, and that might give us some attention. It’s a perfect timing for us to do the American tour now,” says Rasted. But he and his bandmates realized that the Aqua revival was already in full motion this past summer, when they played New York’s Irving Plaza and Los Angeles’s Belasco Theatre — notably before Barbie premiered in theaters — admittedly not knowing what to expect when they took the stage. “We were super-nervous at the New York show, because we were wondering, ‘Who’s going to show up?’ And we can’t play ‘Barbie Girl’ for all 75 minutes — would people know all the songs? But the most fantastic thing happened. Kids were singing all the lyrics, from the first song to the last song — and they were screaming,” says Dif. (It should be noted that while “Barbie Girl” was Aqua’s only hit in the U.S. — which Rasted blames on their American label, MCA Records, making the “weird decision” to pick “Lollipop” as the follow-up single — the group charted multiple No. 1’s around the world and sold 33 million records, making them the most successful Danish band of all time.) “And then the same thing happened in L.A.,” Dif continues, recalling Aqua’s sold-out Belasco show. “It was super-overwhelming. I got emotional, but I was also trying to suck all this new information in. I took my in-ears out and just looked around and went, ‘Wow. Is this seriously possible, to experience this so many years after?’ I get goosebumps thinking about it.” All this must feel vindicating for the band, a quarter-century after Mattel filed what Rasted calls a “silly court case” against MCA, claiming that “Barbie Girl” had violated the beloved doll's copyrights and trademarks and had depicted Barbie as a sex object and “blonde bimbo.” (In 2002, a judge ruled that Aqua’s song was protected as free speech under the First Amendment, and both parties in the lawsuit were “advised to chill.”) Minaj’s Aqua-sampling tune was actually a last-minute addition to the Barbie soundtrack (“I heard that Margot Robbie insisted on having our song in the movie and asked for it — that’s pretty big, I think,” Dif marvels). And the irony is not lost on the band that while Mattel had an issue with “Barbie Girl” — which was actually written about plastic surgery — supposedly “taking the piss” with the Barbie image, Greta Gerwig’s film does just that. “It’s politically correct and politically incorrect at the same time, and I think most people are up for that. The film has an important message, but it doesn’t take itself too serious. It was actually a lot more fun to see than I thought it would be,” says Rasted, who admits he was worried that Barbie would be a “s*** movie.” Dif actually says when he saw Barbie, he felt like he was “watching our own ‘Barbie Girl’ video,” which was directed by Peder Pedersen and Peter Stenbæk and shot in Technicolor, a rarity in the 1990s. “It has so many similarities — the colors and the things. It was like being back at the video shoot 26 years ago. I actually think at one point I said to [former Aqua keyboardist] Claus [Norreen], ‘See, I told you we were way ahead of our time!’” “I think there’s a lot of things in the Barbie movie [that reference Aqua]. Like, when they say, ‘Hi Barbie! Hi Ken!’ — I don’t think if they would’ve done that if we didn’t have that in our song. I mean, you can’t make the Barbie movie without listening to our song,” Rasted laughs. Dif chuckles as he recalls shooting the “Barbie Girl” video — which he jokes could win a “new Grammys category called ‘Best Music Video from the ’90s’” — feeling like he was “walking into a big dollhouse in some big pink backyard.” The resourceful Pedersen and Stenbæk had chopped a repainted old Ford car in half and sawed off its roof, and had rented a plastic horse “because they couldn't get a real horse,” and Dif wondered: “Is this even going to look good?” But Aqua’s cartoonish imagery stood out — first in their home country, and then around the planet. Aqua circa 1997. (Tim Roney/Getty Images) (Tim Roney via Getty Images) “In Denmark at that time, a lot of the music was very rock-orientated, very black-and-white. Being very colorful was a new thing at that time. Nobody looked like us when we came out,” says Rasted. “We shopped a lot in secondhand stores where they had pink shirts and all these colorful things. It’s not that we wanted to overdo it, but just do it. It felt natural to us.” “I remember we went to the Danish Music Awards party and when we walked the red carpet, they were shouting ‘wannabes!’ at us because they apparently associated us a little bit with the Spice Girls. In Denmark, they were not used to seeing people dress up that colorful,” says Dif. “We took a lot of chances with the hair, the spikes, the bright clothes, when everybody [in the ’90s] was super-dead-serious with guitars and singing about how awful they had it. But then a piece of fresh air like us comes in, and it’s just one big pop party.” In retrospect, Rasted feels that Aqua helped usher in “one last era of naïve pop music,” but he stresses, “Yes, we're tongue-in-cheek with our humor, and yes, we do pop, but we don’t have an ironic distance to the stuff that we do. There’s got to be a layer underneath that is a little bit more serious than the obvious layer, even when you’re doing pop.” He theorizes that that’s why they’ve “jumped the generations” and are connecting with Gen Z fans now. And now the future is looking especially Technicolor-bright for Aqua, as they embark on their sold-out U.S. tour, look forward to attending the Grammy Awards in February, and plan to release new music. So, what else is next for the group? Dif answers with a laugh: “Oh… we need our own dolls now.”
  3. Niall Horan agonizes over his "horrendous decisions" as he cuts him team from six to three. (NBC) The Voice Season 24 Playoffs kicked off Tuesday with Niall Horan’s six contestants, and as Niall mentally and emotionally prepared to make some “horrendous decisions” and slash his team down to just three singer who’d advance to the live semifinals, he admitted he was “scared.” Gwen Stefani, who’ll have to make her own tough decisions when the Playoffs continue apace next week, even told Niall, “I actually feel sick for you right now!” Personally, I was feeling sick the end of the night, when Niall eliminated one of my favorite contestants of the season, or any season: throwback songbird Alexa Wildish. Early favorite Alexa Wildish is shockingly eliminated from 'The Voice' Season 24. (NBC) To be fair, Niall was doomed to make a “wrong” decision no matter who he sent home, because his team was so stacked with talent. And I agreed with his other two “no-brainer” choices. I was surprised, however, that Niall used his Super-Save — a new twist that allows each of the coaches to bring back a previously eliminated contestant, from any team — on 13-year-old Julia Roome, as I’d assumed he’d bring back Julia and Alexa’s standout Knockout Rounds partner, Lennon VanderDoes, instead. I still suspect, judging by John Legend’s teary reaction to Lennon’s performance last week, that John might be the coach who gives Lennon a reprieve. But for now, it’s difficult to grasp that all three singers from a Knockout that the entire panel deemed one of the very best in Voice history have already been knocked out of the running. Nini Iris, “River” Niall was certain that his team’s “readymade pop star” could handle this big Bishop Briggs song, and Nini was up for the challenge, eager to deliver the “best performance of my entire life.” She served drama in her brash show-opening number, decked out in balletcore/Madonna-at-the-1984-VMAs couture and holding nothing back, but I agreed with Reba McEntire that she “took it just a little too far.” It was all a bit try-hard, the very opposite of effortless. (Is “effortful” a word? Because that’s what this was.) Gwen, however, thought Nina was “tasteful” and didn’t overdo it, instead “building it to the right moment.” Niall was impressed, asserting that the music industry needs more “big belters” like Nini. Claudia B., “Talking to the Moon” John said he preferred Claudia’s jazzy Norah Jones cover from last week, but I still thought there was real magic here, as Claudia dedicated this aching Bruno Mars ballad to her much-missed fiancé back home. She even had real tears in her eyes, glistening like moonbeams. Reba was “totally captivated” and Niall had “goosebumps” that only made his decision “even harder,” but I suspected this would not be enough for Claudia to secure a spot in Team Niall’s top three. Huntley, “Daylight” The coaches, not the contestants, are picking the songs for the Playoffs, and perhaps on paper Niall’s pick for husky Southern rocker Huntley — singer-songwriter David Kushner’s TikTok-popularized smash — didn’t seem like a good fit. Niall himself admitted that the song choice could turn out to be a “spanner in the works” for Huntley. But this spanner simply worked. Huntley, sporting some smoky emo eyeliner and looking like a total rock star, was giving Creed/Hinder vibes that Middle America will surely love, but there was also nuance here, a perfect mix of softness and edge. Gwen called the performance a “masterful” and raved, “I can’t believe you don’t already have a whole album!” John said this was “well beyond a competition” and told Huntley, “You belong as one of the Grammy-winning artists that are singing on our finale.” I have feeling we will be seeing Huntley on the Season 24 finale — quite possibly in the winner’s circle. Julia Roome, “True Colors” Julia was Niall’s surprising Super-Save, because he “just couldn’t lose a voice that good that early.” And Julia was the most surprised of all, half-joking that when she got the FaceTime call from Niall inviting her back to the show, she thought it was AI. I don’t know if Julia was the wisest use of Niall’s Super-Save — at age 13, she needs more time develop, plus she’ll have plenty other chances in life, unlike some of the older contestants. And I do think her breath control on this emotional Cyndi Lauper anthem wasn’t great; she sounded gaspy from the start. But she did have some exquisite moments, even some moments when the gasping made it sound like she was on the verge of tears, for (perhaps unintentional) dramatic effect. The Super-Save was a great opportunity for Julia to get more screentime and experience, but when Gwen said she was “excited to see what’s going to happen” next for Julia, that sounded like another goodbye. Mara Justine, “You’ve Got the Love” This “one-in-a-million” rock diva hit the stage with hair-flying Alanis energy and, as John put it, “tapped into that falsetto” on this Florence and the Machine barnstormer in a way that was “a real revelation.” This fierce lady was a machine, already so far beyond most of her competitors. Reba described Mara’s performance as an “emotional rollercoaster of excitement,” and style-setter Gwen gushed, “What I love most about you is you’re so you.” Alexa Wildish, “Fields of Gold” This was, as I’ve already spoiled above, the shock elimination of the evening. Niall had just praised Alexa the empath for being “able to sell a song unlike anyone I’ve ever seen,” and he assigned her a Sting song that she’d performed at her grandmother’s memorial, which I’m sure was no coincidence. Alexa’s “Fields of Gold” was pure mellow gold, wowing all of the coaches. John told her, “No one else is like you in this competition,” and Niall said, “You bleed emotion and authenticity.” However, when Niall told Alexa, “It has been so good to watch you amongst all the big belters” and “You are ridiculously talented — and the world will see it at some point,” that did seem like a sadly foreshadowing kiss-off. So, my three picks would have Mara, Huntley, and Alexa… and well, two out of three ain’t bad. Mara and Huntley sailed through, but then Niall unexpectedly chose Nini — ignoring Reba’s criticism of the Georgian singer’s showboating and claiming Nini is “the most ready” for the Lives. Team Niall's Nini Iris, Mara Justine, Claudia B., Julia Roome, Huntley, and Alexa Wildish compete for three spots in 'The Voice' Season 24 live semifinals. (NBC) Tune in next Monday for more horrendous decisions, as the contestants from Teams Legend, Gwen, and Reba — including three additional to-be-announced Super-Saves — compete for the nine remaining spots in the Season 24 semifinals.
  4. After a hiatus from music and social media, rapper Wale is back with new music and a mission to help students attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), which helped give rise to his career. He's partnering with PepsiCo in its efforts to combat food insecurity at HBCUs. The company is donating several $50,000 checks in grants, totaling $250,000, to five schools to help over 37,500 students who struggle to balance the cost of their education and their next meal. The HBCUs receiving grants include Morgan State University, Prairie View A&M University, Jackson State University, Florida A&M University and Bethune-Cookman University. Over the weekend, Wale and Pepsi personally delivered the first two checks at the Florida Classic in Orlando, Fla., a yearly heavyweight football bout between Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman. Wale has a personal connection with HBCUs, having attended both Bowie State University and Virginia State University, as well as Robert Morris University. Yahoo Entertainment spoke to the rapper about supporting a cause near and dear to his heart, his music and making the transition to new label, Def Jam Recordings. Wale speaks during The Recording Academy and The Kennedy Center's "The Intersection of Music and Sports" panel discussion. (Photo by Shannon Finney/Getty Images for The Recording Academy) (Shannon Finney via Getty Images) 1. Why did this particular mission mean a lot to you with helping with food insecurity? Anything, anywhere I can contribute to HBCUs, I'm with it. That's part of my DNA, HBCUs. These are the leaders of tomorrow, man, they gotta eat. That's one of the last things you're supposed to be worried about when you're in college. It's grueling, it's competitive, you feel me? I always tell my manager, what can we do to be involved with HBCUs? Whenever we can. It's kind of a big deal. Even for [2024], we got some more things that we want to do, like showing up to a girl’s basketball game, you know, showing up to HBCU swim teams, just stuff that they don't normally get any mainstream eyes on. 2. You're finally returning after a two-year hiatus. In October, you dropped your track "Max Julien." What other new music can we expect from you soon? We got "BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR" that's currently number one in Nigeria. That's Odumodublvck and Bloody Civilian and myself. That's my first number one in Nigeria, so that's good especially going into December. Just buckle up for 2024. I've had songs do numbers other places, but having it in Nigeria [where my family is from], this means a little bit more to me because it's like my first number one over there. [When] I was at Atlantic [Records], I was trying to emphasize how much I wanted to do stuff with Nigerian artists. 3. You just mentioned Atlantic, tell me about the move over to Def Jam. Was that something that you wanted to keep under wraps for a while and how has that experience been for you? It's the mecca of hip-hop and [Def Jam CEO] Tunji [Balogun] is one of the more forward-thinking executives in the industry. I'm excited to be able to work with him, it's somebody I consider a friend. But I'm also a fan of what he's accomplished. We came into the game around the same time. He was at Interscope [Records] under another one of those top guys. Now he's a top guy. I'd like to think of myself as a top guy in the grand scheme of hip-hop.
  5. Respiratory virus season is ramping up across the United States, and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning that low vaccination rates are leaving many at risk. About 15% of adults and 5% of children have gotten the latest Covid-19 vaccine, according to CDC data through mid-November. “Here’s the bottom line: COVID-19 vaccine uptake is lower than we’d like to see, and most people will be without the added protection that can reduce the severity of COVID-19,” the agency wrote in an update on its website Friday. Covid-19 hospitalizations are on the rise again, with more than 16,000 new admissions during the week ending November 11. Hospitalization rates are lower than they were at this time last year but nearly three times higher than they were during this summer’s record low. There are a number of reasons why it’s important for people to get the latest Covid-19 vaccine, CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen told CNN. “This Covid virus has changed, and you want the most updated Covid vaccine to protect you as we go into this winter season,” she said. “Second, we know that the protection that you get from either having Covid before or being vaccinated before decreases over time.” Vaccination can also help reduce the risk for long Covid, she said. Flu and RSV levels are also increasing, but most respiratory virus hospitalizations this season have been among people with Covid-19, CDC data shows. About a third of adults and children have gotten their flu shot this season, and about 14% of older adults have gotten the new RSV vaccine. “COVID-19 is still an important cause of hospitalization and death, especially for older adults and people with certain underlying medical conditions,” the CDC wrote in the latest online update. “COVID-19 vaccines don’t prevent every infection – that’s true of lots of vaccines – but they can reduce illness severity in people who get vaccinated but still get sick, helping to save lives, reduce hospitalizations, and prevent trips to the doctor.” This winter’s respiratory virus season is just beginning, and now is a “great time” to get vaccinated, Cohen said. “The sooner the better. It does take about two weeks for your body to build up the maximum amount of antibodies, but it’s never too late.” The current Covid-19 vaccination rate is significantly higher among seniors, but more than two-thirds of this high-risk population has not gotten the latest vaccine, according to the CDC. “Because older people are much more likely to get hospitalized and die from COVID-19, it is critical that this population get vaccinated to protect themselves against severe outcomes from COVID-19,” the CDC wrote. The CDC also found racial and ethnic disparities in Covid-19 vaccination rates, with uptake about half as high among Black and Hispanic adults compared with White adults. However, separate survey data from KFF found that Black and Hispanic adults are much more likely than White adults to say they have gotten the new vaccine or plan to do so. Overall, the KFF survey found that most adults in the US are not worried about getting sick with Covid-19 or spreading it over the holidays. Only about half say they plan to get the latest vaccine, and there’s a similar split around plans to take other precautions, such as masking or avoiding crowded places and travel. 6. With holiday season underway, you may be realizing that you forgot to get your Covid-19 and flu vaccines, and now you’ll be sitting across the table from your elderly relatives. The good news is that it’s not too late to get your shots, but what about knocking them both out at the same time? The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says this is an option, but should you? A recent study of Medicare claims data found a slightly increased — but still very rare— risk of stroke for seniors who get a high-dose influenza vaccine and Covid-19 shot at the same time. The risk was about 3 strokes for every 100,000 doses of Pfizer’s bivalent Covid vaccine and about 3 transient ischemic attacks for every 100,000 doses of Moderna’s bivalent Covid vaccine. Other studies have not found the same risk, leading the CDC and US Food and Drug Administration to say there’s no change to their vaccine recommendations at this time. Covid-19 vaccines were updated this year to target one strain of the coronavirus rather than two. Beyond that, getting both shots at the same time does seem to make it a bit more likely that you’ll experience a temporary reaction to the shots; the most common symptoms reported in a government study were fatigue, headache and muscle pain. CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen told CNN that the most important thing is for people to get their vaccines at all — and that early in respiratory virus season is a good time to do it. “It definitely is OK for you to get multiple vaccines on the same day,” Cohen said. “I would talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner about what’s right for you.” Does co-administration affect protection? But what about effectiveness? Does getting both shots together affect how well they work? Here’s where there might be an upside. A small study presented at the recent Vaccines 2023 conference in Boston found that health care workers who got flu and bivalent Covid-19 shots on the same day had higher antibody responses right after they got them, as well as six months later, compared with people who got their shots on different days. Susanna Barouch, a high school student in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who led the research, said she thinks that giving the shots at the same time may prod the immune system to react more strongly to shots. “The flu vaccine might have been an adjuvant for the Covid vaccine,” she said. But this hasn’t been the only study to look at the question, and perplexingly, other studies have come to the opposite conclusion or found essentially no difference between giving the vaccines together or one at a time. This is one of the first studies to find that co-administration increases antibody levels, and Barouch says its findings need to be replicated before they’re accepted as fact. “Definitely, I would say this is far from settled,” said Stephen Moss, a researcher at the University of Michigan. Moss led a recent study that compared neutralizing antibody responses of 53 Israeli health care workers who received their bivalent Covid-19 vaccines separately or with a flu shot. Blood samples from these health care workers were equally able to prevent Covid-19 and flu viruses from infecting cells, whether they got their vaccines together or separately. A study from the Netherlands, published in June, found that antibodies after co-administration showed significantly lower neutralization capacity compared with a reference group that got their vaccines separately. Moss said most studies of co-administration have found either “a slight increase, a slight decrease or no change whatsoever,” in antibody levels, he said. What that means, he says, is that from a broader public health perspective, it’s probably a good idea to recommend that people get both at the same time. “It cuts down on doctor’s visits. It cuts down on the number of encounters with the health care system you have to have. It also cuts down on the number of days you feel like crap after the vaccine. So you only have to go through that once rather than twice,” Moss said. Real world outcomes Reassuringly, a large recent study by researchers at Pfizer, which looked at the health outcomes in people who got their flu and Covid-19 vaccines together or separately, found little difference between these groups. The study found that rates of hospitalizations, emergency room visits and doctor’s visits were similar between both groups. Overall, the group that got both shots at the same time was slightly more likely to visit the doctor or emergency room for Covid-19 but less likely to need medical care for the flu, suggesting that getting both shots together improved immune protection against influenza infections. So how you get your vaccines comes down largely to personal preference, but Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University, says that getting them together makes a lot of sense, especially this far into the season. “I would just remind everyone that a vaccine deferred is often a vaccine never received, because you have to make another effort to go in,” he said. 7. Editor’s Note: Sign up for CNN’s Meanwhile in China newsletter, which explores what you need to know about the country’s rise and how it impacts the world. Hospitals in Beijing and northern China are grappling with a surge of children with respiratory illnesses as the country enters its first winter since relaxing stringent Covid-19 controls nearly one year ago. Wait times to see doctors stretch for hours, with hundreds of patients queuing at some children’s hospitals in major cities across northern China, according to CNN reporting and Chinese state and social media. An official at the Beijing Children’s Hospital told state media Tuesday that the current average of more than 7,000 daily patients “far exceeds the hospital’s capacity.” The largest pediatric hospital in nearby Tianjin broke a record on Saturday, receiving more than 13,000 children at its outpatient and emergency departments, according to a local state-run outlet. When CNN called to inquire about appointment slots at the Beijing Friendship Hospital on Thursday, a staff member said it could take all day to see a pediatrician. “Right now, we have a lot of kids here. Those who booked an emergency appointment yesterday still weren’t able to see the doctor this morning,” the staff member said. Health officials in Beijing and other major cities in northern China have said typical seasonal illnesses, including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as well as mycoplasma pneumonia – a bacterial infection that typically causes mild infection and commonly affects children – were driving causes. The surge in cases across northern China comes amid a rise in seasonal respiratory infections around the northern hemisphere, including in the United States, where RSV is spreading at “unprecedented” levels among children. But the situation in China raised global concern after the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday asked China to provide more information on an increase in respiratory illnesses and “reported clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children,” citing a post from open-source surveillance system ProMED. After speaking with Chinese health and hospital officials Thursday, however, the WHO said the data indicated an increase in outpatient consultations and hospital admissions of children due to mycoplasma pneumonia in May and common seasonal illnesses RSV, adenovirus and influenza virus since October. “Some of these increases are earlier in the season than historically experienced, but not unexpected given the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, as similarly experienced in other countries,” WHO said. The agency added that Chinese authorities said there had been “no detection of any unusual or novel pathogens or unusual clinical presentations.” Outside experts monitoring the situation also noted there was no evidence of a novel pathogen at work, but called for China to share more information about the situation with the public. “We don’t think there is an unknown pathogen hidden somewhere,” Jin Dongyan, a virologist at the University of Hong Kong’s School of Biomedical Sciences, told CNN. “There’s no evidence for that.” Catherine Bennett, an epidemiologist at Deakin University in Australia, said the main concern is if the rise in childhood pneumonia were to indicate a new pathogen, or new levels of disease severity. “So far we have not heard reports of either,” Bennett said, adding that it was important to monitor sources of infection to rule out such concerns. Children receive intravenous drips at a children's hospital in Beijing on November 23, 2023. - Jade Gao/AFP/Getty Images Crowded hospitals Over recent weeks, Chinese parents have complained on social media about the crowded situation at hospitals, where it takes hours for children to see a doctor before more lengthy waits to get a blood test or intravenous drip. Given China’s relatively underdeveloped primary care system, sick people typically head to hospitals or emergency rooms as a first point of contact. Those facilities can become overcrowded during peak seasons. On the Chinese social media platform Weibo, a widely shared photo showed a hospital screen notifying patients the queue had more than 700 people with an estimated wait time of 13 hours. At a pediatric hospital affiliated with the Capital Institute of Pediatrics in Beijing, the halls were so full that some children with intravenous drips sat on the laps of their parents, who lined the hallways on folding stools, videos on social media showed. China’s national health authorities and hospital officials have repeatedly urged parents not to rush children directly to large pediatric facilities, instead calling for them to take kids to be diagnosed at other health centers offering primary care or general services. The National Health Commission (NHC) warned parents on Thursday that large hospitals could have “long wait times and a high risk of cross-infection,” directing them to other kinds of facilities for triage. In a statement, the NHC said it had instructed “all localities” to strengthen their case management and treatment systems – including identifying severe cases among the influx of patients. Beijing’s municipal government meanwhile republished a state media article featuring a doctor telling parents that they didn’t need to ask for intravenous fluids “as soon as a child has a fever.” The WHO on Thursday said Chinese officials reported that “the rise in respiratory illness has not resulted in patient loads exceeding hospital capacities.” Post-Covid surge The surge in hospital visits coincides with China’s first full winter without its “zero-Covid” controls, which saw people maintain strict social distancing and wear face masks. The controls were abruptly relaxed last December after rare protests erupted against pandemic measures which included strict lockdowns. It’s unclear if there’s been an increase in respiratory illnesses or severe cases among children relative to pre-pandemic years because of limited public data released by China. “During zero-Covid, these (common respiratory) diseases would be under-estimated (as people avoided hospitals), and because everyone was practicing some social distancing the incidence was low,” said Jin, the virologist at Hong Kong University. “It’s absolutely normal that this year compared to last year would be a big increase. But whether it’s a big surge compared to 2018, 2019, that’s still to be determined.” he said. Social factors could be at play in the current situation, Jin added, as parents may also be more concerned about their child’s health following the pandemic, prompting more to seek medical help. More attention is being paid to disease outbreaks following the emergence of the pandemic coronavirus in late 2019. There are also calls for more transparency – including from China, which has been accused of hindering investigation in the origins of the virus and obscuring early information about its spread. Christine Jenkins, a professor of respiratory medicine at UNSW Sydney, said a rise in viral respiratory tract infections in children at this time of year is not unexpected and is a phenomenon that has been observed over many decades worldwide at the onset of winter. “However, in the context of the pandemic due to a relatively new virus such as (the novel coronavirus) and the potential for other new viruses or mutations to cause respiratory tract illness, prompt reporting and monitoring are essential,” she said. 8. ST. PAUL, Minn. — Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard says anxiety and depression leading to alcohol abuse led him to seek treatment from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. The league and union on Friday announced Girard would be away from the team indefinitely to receive treatment from the joint program. Girard, 25, had been away from the Avalanche for personal reasons and did not play in their past two games. News of him entering the program came before Colorado visited the Minnesota Wild. He will continue to be paid while getting treatment and can return to the team when cleared for on-ice competition by program administrators. “I have made a proactive decision to take care of my mental health, and will be entering treatment for severe anxiety and depression that has gone untreated for too long and led to alcohol abuse,” Girard said in a statement posted by his agency, CAA. “I want to express my gratitude to my wife, family, friends, the club, my teammates and the fans for their patience, understanding, and continued support.” His father, Tony, said in a social media post earlier in the day that Girard was in good hands and asked others to respect his son’s privacy. “Just to reassure everyone, we can however tell you that we are staying in touch with him and your get well soon messages are touching him immensely,” Tony Girard posted. “Our man is a fighter, a great fighter and will always honor our region and all of Quebec. Hockey is still his big passion!” Girard, a native of Roberval, Quebec, is in his seventh full NHL season. He broke his sternum midway through Colorado’s Stanley Cup run in 2022.
  9. Jets fans who turned out at MetLife Stadium for Friday’s game likely wish they went shopping instead. Raheem Mostert ran for two touchdowns, Tua Tagovailoa threw for one, and Jevon Holland returned a Hail Mary for a 99-yard touchdown as the Dolphins rang in the start of Black Friday football with a rout of the home team. The 34-13 win pushes Miami’s record to 8-3 on the season while the Jets are now 4-7 and riding a four-game losing streak into Week 13. Both of Mostert’s scores came with the Dolphins comfortably ahead in the fourth quarter and they held that lead because their defense didn’t allow the Tim Boyle-led Jets offense to convert a third down until the final minutes of the game. They made some of their final numbers look better on late drives and got a rare offensive touchdown on a pass to Garrett Wilson, but they still finished with 162 net yards, two of their 12 first downs in the first three quarters, and seven sacks allowed in the latest in a string of pitiful offensive performances. It looked like the Jets might have a shot to pull off an upset after Brandin Echols returned an interception for a touchdown before halftime, but Holland returned the favor on the final play of the half and the Dolphins were back up by 11 points. Tagovailoa threw another interception and lost a fumble as well, but was 21-of-30 for 243 yards by focusing on his top two wideouts. Tyreek Hill had nine catches for 102 yards and a touchdown while Jaylen Waddle caught eight balls for 114 yards. Mostert had 20 carries for 94 yards and Jeff Wilson had 11 for 56 as the Dolphins found success in both phases of the game. Outside of the turnovers, the only real negative for the Dolphins was a non-contact injury suffered by edge rusher Jaelan Phillips. The team announced he was out with an Achilles injury and it looked like a tear for the Miami defender. Miami will move on to a Week 13 road game against a Washington team in disarray after a 45-10 loss to the Cowboys led to the firing of defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio. The Jets will host the Falcons in an attempt to try to find something positive to build on heading into the final weeks of the year.
  10. The NBA has opened an investigation into allegations that surfaced on social media of an inappropriate relationship between the Thunder’s Josh Giddey and a minor, a league spokesman confirmed to NBC Sports. Allegations of Giddey being with a girl said to be a high school junior appeared on social media earlier in the week but the original posts were taken down when they started to garner a lot of attention. There have been few confirmable facts about the situation. Giddey, 21, and Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault, declined to comment on the situation Friday.
  11. The player who signed a four-year, $44 milion deal as a free agent wasn’t available on Friday. Because the Jets — and specifically coach Robert Saleh — didn’t deem him to be good enough to play today. “Obviously, my decision,” Saleh told reporters after the 34-13 loss. “There are things that we all need to get better at, including him. He is going to be here for the next year-and-a-half. He’s going to be a part of this. Just wanted to make sure that one, I wanted to get some of the young guys an opportunity to play; and two, it’s kind of a challenge to see if he can recapture the edge and who he is and the person that we have a lot of faith in. He’s a good football player. I do believe that. For Allen, he will be back sooner rather than later.” Asked whether Saleh believes Lazard lost his edge, Saleh revised his message. “Edge is probably the wrong word,” Saleh said. “I’m sorry. I’ll speak for him. He hasn’t been playing up to his standard. Everyone is pressing on that side of the ball to make something happen. There are parts of his game that need to get better.” Under that standard, frankly, most of the team’s starting offense would have been inactive today, and most days. And it’s no surprise. The entire team was engineered for Aaron Rodgers. And Rodgers played four snaps. And with a record of 4-7, there’s no real point in Rodgers returning this season. As to Lazard, the Jets have no choice but to keep him through 2024. After that, they’ll surely cut the cord. Until then, they’ll hope that Rodgers’s return next year will turn everything around.
  12. LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Marshall Meeder was within days of walking away from football when Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods texted him to see if he wanted to become a Hawkeye. Meeder had entered the transfer portal last spring after kicking three seasons at Central Michigan, and he was prepared to focus on finishing his engineering degree if no offer interested him. After he barely cleared the crossbar with his first attempt of the season as time ran out Friday to beat Nebraska 13-10, Meeder was never more glad he told Woods yes. Meeder’s opportunity for the 20th-ranked Hawkeyes came at the most pressure-packed moment after Drew Stevens had two field-goal tries blocked and had two kickoffs go out of bounds. When Meeder’s 38-yarder went through, teammates mobbed him and hoisted him on their shoulders. He held the Heroes Trophy that goes to the winner of the rivalry game as the Hawkeyes celebrated at midfield while officials determined whether any time remained on the clock. “It’s the same kick I’ve always made, just a little more pressure,” Meeder said. “I try not to let that get to me. I’ve done it a million times. No reason to mess something up now.” Three of Iowa’s last five wins over Nebraska have come on late field goals. Miguel Recinos kicked a 41-yarder as time ran out in 2018 and Keith Duncan had a 48-yarder with one second left in 2019 that also denied the Huskers bowl eligibility. “To lose in that fashion, I wouldn’t wish that on anybody,” Nebraska coach Matt Rhule said. The Hawkeyes (10-2, 7-2, No. 17 CFP), who clinched the Big Ten West title last week, earned a 10th win for the fourth time since 2015 and eighth under 25th-year coach Kirk Ferentz. The Cornhuskers (5-7, 3-6) lost four straight to end Rhule’s first season at Nebraska. Their bowl drought will stretch to seven years, the longest among Power Five schools. Before Friday, Meeder hadn’t kicked in a game since Nov. 25, 2022. He missed an extra point on his final attempt for Central Michigan in a loss to Eastern Michigan. Meeder said he was told at halftime that he would do the kicking the rest of the way following Stevens’ two blocked field goals. “Drew just had a tough day today,” Ferentz said. “He’s been a really good performer for us and just so consistent that the fact, to have two kickoffs go out of bounds, I just felt like maybe it’s best to let him sit a little bit.” Meeder was called on after Ethan Hurkett intercepted Chubba Purdy’s pass and ran it to the Huskers 37 with 15 seconds left. Leshon Williams broke loose for 22 yards on first down before Deacon Hill ran left and took a 5-yard loss to set up Meeder’s try from the middle of the field. “Iowa does a good job of keeping you ready whether you’re a backup or a starter,” Meeder said. “I felt ready from the day I got here. I was waiting for my opportunity and made the most of it.” Iowa managed only 57 yards and two first downs in the second half but found a way to win a fourth straight game and go into next week’s Big Ten championship game coming off seven wins in its last eight games. The Huskers ended a seven-game losing streak in the series last year, but they haven’t beaten Iowa in Lincoln since 2011. The Huskers had a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but Tristan Alvano was wide left with a 44-yard try into a stiff north wind. The Hawkeyes had four straight three-and-outs to open the second half and punted a fifth straight time before they got the ball back at their 27 with less than a minute left. Then Tommi Hill intercepted Deacon Hill’s pass over the middle to give Nebraska the ball with 31 seconds left. But when Hurkett stepped in front of Purdy’s pass on second down, Iowa was in position for Meeder with a gusty wind at his back. “I’ve dreamed of that moment since I started kicking as a freshman,” he said. THE TAKEAWAY Iowa: The Hawkeyes keep finding ways to win these low-scoring games. Iowa has scored 15 or fewer points in four of its 10 wins, most by a team since 1991, according to OptaSTATS. Its 216 points for the season are by far the fewest of any team with nine or more wins. Nebraska: Turnovers bit the Huskers again. They committed three against the Hawkeyes and have a Bowl Subdivision-high 31 for the season. Nebraska has lost 24 in a row against Top 25 opponents since 2016. UP NEXT Iowa: plays No. 2 Ohio State or No. 3 Michigan in Big Ten championship game on Dec. 2 in Indianapolis. Nebraska: Season over.
  13. Policy refresher So everyone's aware, when you're on the site or discord, et al., conversations and content should be appropriate for all-ages (13+). Stuff generally considered adult, sexual, and/or NSFW ("not safe for work") is NOT allowed in generally-accessible spaces. For the site/forums this would mean keeping this content contained to the donor/VIP category and marked as such, and for the discord it would be the NSFW channels you can unlock by requesting a role. This is not and logistically can never be an exhaustive or concrete rule. There will be warnings/tapes/bans depending on the severity among other factors. Ask yourself some questions, like "would it be cool to talk about this with another (sensible) employee at work?", or "would it be alright if to say this/steer the conversation into that territory at a family gathering where underage relatives will be listening?" If no, then don't say it. We understand that not all topic and content that is sexual or adult-oriented is bad, rather informational at times - we accept this but do expect users to self enforce themselves and steer conversations towards all-ages boundaries in general. Please feel free to continue a mature discussion in one of the adult spaces.

  16. About candidate processing delay | About recent offer delay Two long-term active candidate team members within the management team have recently been hospitalized due to illness. As a result, the active candidate processing manpower has dropped to zero, resulting in some seeds being placed in the candidate area until they expire. According to the management team's knowledge, the two members are currently There is no danger, and the candidate area is expected to return in the near future. The candidate area is currently temporarily taken over by inactive members. Expired seeds have been reviewed and processed by members who have temporarily taken over (those that have passed will be approved by SysOp in cooperating with the modification of the database). In addition, the sharding limit for direct release of seeds by gospel group members has been modified to 16 MiB * 20000 shards = 320 GiB (original (10,000 shards), seeds below this limit will not be automatically transferred to the candidate area. -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------- Both of our active offer mods got hospitalized recently and our active offer manpower reaches zero. As a result some torrents were expired in offer section. As far as we know, they are not in danger and will recover in recent future. Non-active mods were now in charge of offer section temporarily. Expired uploads were processed (SysOp changes the database record to pass if it shall be passed). And, Uploader class's direct upload torrent file piece limit were raised to 20000 pieces (from 10000), allowing a 320 GiB upload without being auto transferred into offer section.
