  2. Admin changes Today we say goodbye to Doubt who has decided to step down from his position as administrator. We thank him for the time he spent helping and improving PTP. To help the rest of the administrator team take over Doubt's duties, we have promoted ChunkyLover53. Most of you should know Chunks by now. He's been around for a very long time, and we're excited to have him as an administrator. Please give him a warm welcome. IMDb API Update As many of you noticed, we had quite a bit of missing information on our movie pages. This was due to IMDb putting their API behind a pay-wall causing all scraping to return empty values, erasing the data we had cached on site. We've been able to remedy this, for the most part, by resorting to page scraping. There are a few things still missing, but we'll be working on them and everything should be back to normal soon. A big thank you to Chameleon for helping out with this! Oscar Night is hastily approaching, and to get you in the mood, we've organized a few things. A Night to Remember - The Celebration of Movies First of all is a return of the monthly upload contest. This is just a small contest (ends on March 4th - Oscar night) but you can expect the regular (with few exciting changes though!) format to return in March and going forward. This special contest is all about awards. We've curated several PTP collections for the contest, and all movies in these collections (of course including the ones we don't have on site yet) are eligible for the contest. Read more in [OFFICIAL] A Night to Remember - The Celebration of Movies in February and March. PRIZES! Places and Prizes may increase as the contest goes on! 1st Place - A €75 gift certificate to Pulsed Media! + One Month VIP! + 20,000,000 points! + A Custom Title 2nd Place - A €50 gift certificate to Pulsed Media! + 10,000,000 points! + A Custom Title 3rd Place - A €25 gift certificate to Pulsed Media! + 5,000,000 points! + A Custom Title Oscar Betting Pool As per the tradition, codebeard has once again organized an Oscar betting pool contest. Staff has contributed with a few (official) prizes and a long list of kind users have supplemented them. Entries submitted up to Sunday the 25th will receive DOUBLE WINNINGS! so get your entry submitted sooner rather than later. Read more: Academy Award / Oscar Betting Pool 2018 Oscar Night in #drive-in This year, we've also teamed up with the guys and girls running the #drive-in channel on our IRC network. For those of you that don't know, #drive-in is an (unofficial) film club on IRC where users meet and watch movies in synchronicity. For Oscar Night, #drive-in will meet up and watch the Oscar show together and YOU are invited, too! Before the Oscar show begins, there's even a fun, Oscar-inspired quiz! For more information, see Oscars 2018 - 90th Academy Awards. As always lots of love from all of us to all of you. PTP Staff
  3. Request Section and enforcement of filling requests: I decided to go through the Request Section that is located at the bottom of the Home page. I like many others have tagged many “Take Request(s)” and then have not completed the fill with uploading the torrents. In addition I went through the first 20 pages to see if I had any other requests that I could fill. So with the ones I originally said I would fill and the new ones it came to a total of 67. I have some free time in the next 3 days so I plan on filling as many of those requests as I can. Since they are already on my hard drives all I need to do is complete the torrent description and scan the cover and disc. So Here is my list of what I plan on filling for member’s request. I ask that the other member’s that have made the effort to say they will fill a request do so. Other members should go through and see what they can fill also. The Shoutbox is for communication and it is not for filling requests. From this point on if a member asks for a title and it was not put into the Request Section I will delete the torrent. So you now have official warning. It does not take much effort to do this and I believe that a member that fills another member’s request should get proper recognition for it. Also by using the request system it tells who will fill a request, the Shoutbox will not do that. Here are the titles I am filling: 1. 23 Paces to Baker Street (1956) 2. 48 Hrs. (1982) 3. Abandoned (1949) 4. Beethoven 4 5. Behind Locked Bars (1948) 6. Big Red (1962) 7. Bunco Squad (1950) 8. Cavalcade (1933) 9. Chaplin Mutual Comedies (2014) 10. Crazy Heart (2009) 11. 4. Following the reports of major security flaws discovered in newer and older builds of uTorrent and Bittorrent that allows outsiders to gain control over your computer all windows versions of uT and Bittorrent have been removed from our whitelist. More on this issue can be found here. It may be possible to mitigate this bug by disabling net discoverability in uTorrent versions 2.2.1 and earlier as shown in this image But it is not confirmed, and probably won't be, if this solves this vulnerability. Currently the only certain way to mitigate this bug is to not use uTorrent or Bittorrent versions altogether and move to safer clients such as Tixati, BiglyBT, qBittorrent, Deluge and other open source projects. Similar bug has been reported to affect users of Transmission, but a patch has been published according to TorrentFreak. Because of this latest version of qBittorrent (v4.0.4) has also been approved and added to our approveed client list, however do note that some users may experience unstable upload and download speeds unlike with previous builds such as v3.3.16. New whitelist should be in effect in few hours, so it might be time to start mitigating your torrents to other clients. Our updated whitelist can be found here.
  5. uTorrent is banned! We've blacklisted the uTorrent 3.x line-up due to a severe security flaw that can impact not only site security and the security of our peers but more-so the security of the users that are running uTorrent. This means only 1.6.x, 1.8.x and 2.x versions are allowed! See more on our torrent client whitelist. This security flaw can allow a remote attack to download things to the affected computer using nothing more than code running in the background of a web page that is visited. This includes the ability to remotely download an executable to the machine's startup folder. Other risks involved may be the ability to pull peer data and passkeys from the client, which is why we are taking a fairly aggressive approach of axing the entire 3.x line-up until we definitely know the flaw no longer exists in a new version. We are not ready to move forward with any faith nor optimism for the company to have actually secured their product in their latest "fixed" release. We strongly suggest you take this severe and dangerous flaw seriously and immediately discontinue use of the client on any tracker. Just having the client running in the background is all that is required to use this exploit against you. That said, from what we have been able to determine, the 1.6.x, 1.8.x and 2.x line are not nearly as vulnerable as the 3.x line-up. However, to be safe it is strongly advised to set Advanced -> net.discoverable to false and restart the client. For the time being, we will continue to allow 1.6.x, 1.8.x and 2.x. This may not be a lasting thing.
  6. Achieving level 100 in Kingdom Hearts isn't too difficult a task, unless you decide to tackle that goal without ever leaving the game's starting location. And that's exactly what one (questionably sane) man has now done. AaroneousGaming has been playing a lot of Kingdom Hearts this past month and, based on a report from Kotaku, he managed to sink a whopping 210 hours into the game in that period of time. That's a pretty impressive run through any game, but even more so when you consider the fact that this masochist racked up the hours without ever leaving the game's starting location. His goal? To reach level 100. That lofty aspiration was achieved recently during a stream, with AaroneousGaming hitting the mark with about 200 hours, 10 minutes on the clock. And again, because this point needs stressing, that was achieved without ever stepping foot off of Destiny Islands. For those unfamiliar with the original Kingdom Hearts, Destiny Islands serves as the game's brief tutorial area. Before Sora's life gets completely turned on its head and his friends are pulled into a narrative so tangled even Square Enix doesn't know what's going on at this point, he spent his days climbing and jumping around a small island while practicing swordplay with his pals. You're meant to play through this area pretty quickly and then, boom, you get sucked into the actual game. Obviously, you don't earn a heck of a lot of experience in a tutorial area. Instead, you're supposed to venture out into the world, fight more and more baddies and, eventually, all of that boosted experience will bring dedicated players up to level 100. AaroneousGaming decided to skip all of that nonsense and instead stick to what he knows best: Destiny Islands. As you can imagine -- and as that 200-plus-hour timeframe proves -- reaching level 100 under those restrictions took some serious dedication. Dedicated players who don't just run from story beat to story beat can wrap up a run through the original Kingdom Hearts in about 60 hours. That's a pretty beefy game by most standards. This guy, though, managed to triple that time within the tutorial. While we imagine he will never want to touch the game again, we have to admit we're a bit curious to see how quickly the rest of the game flies by now that Aaroneous has maxed out Sora. Kingdom Hearts has a lot of exposition and side distractions, but we've got to figure any combat would be a breeze at this point. He'll probably be one-shotting early bosses. After 200 hours in the tutorial, though, maybe Aaroneous would be better served to step away from the series for a bit and come back (presumably) later this year when Kingdom Hearts III finally arrives.
  7. The cooperative heist game, Payday 2, is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch next Tuesday, Feb. 27. Up until now, though, there has been some confusion as to how up-to-date that version of the game will be. According to a recent update from the developers at Starbreeze, the answer is, "about a year old." With Payday 2 set to launch next week, someone got their hands on an early copy of the game and has started posting videos. In those videos, players from other platforms noticed certain features missing from the game, features that were added throughout 2017. This caused quite an uproar, with reddit posts popping up discouraging folks from buying the game because it's outdated. There's a lot of static out there, so thankfully Polygon managed to get a line directly to Starbreeze, who filled in the gaps. According to their statement, the Switch game is slightly behind the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, which are themselves slightly behind the PC version. Apparently that all has to do with development timing. The reasoning for the Switch content: we're making continuous updates to a game that's turning 5 years old this year, and to get the game out in early 2018 on Switch meant that our team had to go with the content ported and available at the time of console submission. In other words, the Switch version of Payday 2, according to Starbreeze, is on par with the other console versions from June 2017. Those other versions received another update in late 2017, which is not currently included in the Switch version of the game. And again, those other console versions are still an update behind PC. The statement goes on to say that the Switch version of Payday 2 will receive updates to address the disparity, though folks on message boards don't seem to be convinced. Call me naïve, but I tend to trust Starbreeze on this one. Of course, I haven't been playing Payday 2 for the past five years, so maybe there's a reason folks are so skeptical at the moment. But their reasoning certainly seems to make sense. If they started working on a Switch version of Payday 2 last year and were gunning for an early 2018 launch, it stands to reason that the game might be missing content added to other versions of the game just a couple of months ago. It also stands to reason that Starbreeze would already be working on an update to bring the Switch version of the game on par with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which are apparently only one update in the lead. If nothing else, I'm not sure the Switch version being an update behind other platforms is a great reason to encourage folks to "Please do not buy Payday 2 for Switch. It's a severely outdated version. Do not support the developers," as one forum title suggests, but that's up to each individual to decide.
  8. Bandai Namco have been slowly rolling out new info for Soul Calibur 6, giving gamers a small taste of the characters you can play in the game. Two more characters have been revealed, including a long time fan favorite who has captured the hearts and hands of gamers the world around since debuting many years ago. Gamespot is reporting that Isabella Valentine and Zasalamel have both been added to the ever-expanding roster of characters for Soul Calibur 6. Ivy returns with her signature spiked whip known as the Ivy Blade, which is actually based on the real life weapon the dragon tail whip, which usually is a traditional whip with a spear-tipped blade at the end of it. In Ivy's case the weapon has a series of bladed edges along the body of the whip, making it very dangerous. Given that this is a reboot of sorts, the game goes back to Ivy's roots of wanting to destroy the original Soul Edge, since her father was driven mad attempting to get his hands on it and both her parents died over the obsession with the cursed blade. Like many of the participants in the battle, Ivy vows to hunt down and destroy the Soul Edge using her custom-made Ivy Blade. Her attacks are a mix of classic European sword fighting fused with the traditional Chinese whip attacks, creating a very unique martial arts style that fuses the best of both worlds from the East and the West. Ivy has been a super popular character since making her debut in the original Soul Calibur long ago way back on the Dreamcast. Over the years she's become a staple member of the cast thanks to having a very unique weapon and a very fluid and smooth fighting style that really resonates with the gaming community. Ivy's reveal was also accompanied by a second character, Zasalamel. He originally made his debut way back in Soul Calibur 3, which came out for the arcades and PS2. Zasalamel has a mid-ranged scythe as his main weapon and focuses on using a lot of oblong attacks and circular mid-range strikes. Zasalamel isn't as fast as characters like Ivy or Mitsurugi. Instead, he has more methodical strikes themed around the scythe's ability to stop opponents from advancing in on him. He also has the ability to take other fighters out of their element by using the scythe to pull them in close or knock them directly off their feet, which should prove to be useful in forcing opponents to adapt to his unorthodox style of fighting. Bandai Namco didn't reveal what Zasalamel's story is in this upcoming edition of Soul Calibur 6, but did note that he belongs to the secret Guardians of the Spirit Sword, who are tasked with protecting both the Soul Calibur and the Soul Edge swords. He was apparently outcast and exiled from the clan for breaking their laws but has his own motivations for seeking the cursed weapons in the latest game. Soul Calibur 6 is due out later this year for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
  9. Hosting EA Play ahead of E3 2017 apparently worked out nicely because the publisher has announced that a repeat event is happening once again this year, though with a few noted changes. Just like with last year's event, EA Play will be hosted out of Los Angeles before the big E3 showcase gets fully up and running. Several publishers have stepped away from the show in recent years, opting to host their own showcases nearby rather than join all of the LA Convention Center hubbub. This year's EA Play event will run from June 9-11, according to a posting from Gameinformer. That means it will be ongoing during what are traditionally press conference days for other publishers, with the E3 floor itself not opening until June 12-14. As a reminder, this year's main show is once again open to the paying public, though morning hours during each of the convention center days will be relegated to press only. To take a bit of the sting off, this year's show will also run an hour longer each day. That means public attendees can stay up partying as late as they want and only have to worry about getting up early enough to grab lunch before hitting the show floor each afternoon. As for EA Play, the venue will be the Hollywood Palladium and tickets are said to be going on sale sometime this spring. The event is basically a shrunken-down E3 experience. They offer their own press conference and space where folks can try out upcoming games. EA has stated that, despite having a launch pushed to 2019, Anthem will be playable by the public at this year's show. Also, there's a new Battlefield on the way and, while we don't know anything outside the fact that it's due to launch this fall, it will also be one of the highlighted games during EA Play. We figure the usual assortment of sports games will be on playable kiosks, and likely a handful of mobile titles. Based on a statement from EA, the program will be better organized this year, giving folks a better opportunity to actually see and play the games. One of the big complaints coming out of last year's EA Play event was that there simply weren't enough opportunities for everyone to check out the games. And for those who can't attend, EA has confirmed they will once again partner with various streaming personalities across Twitch, Facebook and YouTube, giving folks plenty of looks at the upcoming roster of EA games. Given recent events concerning EA and microtransactions (we're looking at you, Battlefront II), we'll be curious to see if the ongoing controversy receives any attention at EA Play. This would probably be a good opportunity for the publisher to address the situation, as well as outline any potential changes in the coming years. Then again, maybe each game's presentation will boast loot boxes aplenty. We'll just have to wait and see.
  10. Harmonix is still updating the music-rhythm experience provided in Rock Band 4 for the home consoles. The latest update adds some major new changes that have rolled out for gamers still putting in some time and play sessions with the title. Over on the official Harmonix website the changelog for the update was revealed, including some new changes to the online portion of Rock Band 4. The developers promised a big overhaul update for early 2018 and that included adding the all new Online Quickplay option, which allows players to quickly add customizable lobbies where you can easily start up a game and invite friends or strangers into the fold. Additionally, Harmonix added the option for gamers to join in on sessions via invite. So, you can have your favorite buddy or longtime rival hop into a game via invite. Alternatively, you can setup the private or public games and change the length of the sessions along with what songs will be played through the playlist. Hosts also have the ability to set preferences based on player stats, skill level and whether or not they own certain songs. It's a great way to further refine the matchmaking process so that you can match up and play with the exact kind of players that best suit your playing preferences. There are a lot of quality of life upgrades added to make the gameplay experience more open and versatile for gamers when it comes to the multiplayer online mode, such as being able to save the settings for a session and having those settings stay as the default for the next time you log into the game. If you're waiting in a session for a song to finish while in the Green Room, you can back out mid-song without having to wait for the song to finish. This is a neat little feature in Rock Band 4 so that players aren't beholden to sticking around to see a set finish out if they don't want to. Another new feature is that text-based messaging is now present. So if you're not keen on chatting with people via voice-chat you can use the text messenger to communicate in a room without even joining a party. But it's not all just ease of use and better access to multiplayer in Rock Band 4. Harmonix also took some time out to improve the quality of the game's presentation by upping the character animations in the game, along with improving the game's surround sound and adding an all new song filter for the Challenge songs. The trill and tremolo lanes have also been fixed up along with a visual bug for the guitar and bass. To help newbies get going, Harmonix also added some new loading screen background tips so that gamers can hit the ground running when they boot up Rock Band 4. The rest of the post goes through setting up the all new Sessions mode, where you can create and customize the kind of Session you want to start and how you want to play through the mode with other players who join in on the fun. The big new update has gone live for Rock Band 4, so you can play with the new features right now.
  11. That is probably the last headline you ever thought you would read when it comes to Half-Life and the series' hero, Gordon Freeman. In fact, most people assumed that the next time we would hear about the silent scientist would be something Half-Life 3 related. Well, it turns out his next big commercial outing will be in Final Fantasy XV. Polygon is reporting that those who purchase Final Fantasy XV on PC starting March 6th will be in for a little surprise... well technically it's a pretty big surprise. Valve's Half-Life hero, Gordon Freeman, will be available as a playable character in the game if you purchase the title from the Steam store. Freeman will be selectable from the costumes menu where you can swap the standard Noctis skin for Freeman. PC gamers get the benefit of having access to the Half-Life pack just for purchasing the game or pre-ordering it before May 1st. Only Noctis will be able to wear the Freeman suit during the main campaign, so if you were hoping to slap Freeman over Prompto or Gladiolus and have him give Noct a helping hand during battle, sadly that won't be possible. Only Noctis can be the dimension-hopping savior. However, there will be additional accessories made available for the multiplayer mode, allowing gamers to equip their multiplayer characters with glasses and a crowbar in the Final Fantasy XV: Comrades expansion, which will be included in the base game for PC gamers. Steam gamers aren't the only ones getting something special with the release of the large-scale JRPG. If you purchase the game from the Windows Store you'll be able to import your save data from the Xbox One version of Final Fantasy XV, in a sort of pseudo-Play Anywhere feature. The Xbox and Windows Store version of the game will also have the added benefit of being cross-platform compatible for the Comrades multiplayer expansion pack. So, those of you playing on Xbox One and the Windows PC version will be able to interact with one another. That's definitely going to be a big selling point for some gamers who likely worry about player population. The cross-play will arrive later as a post-launch update for the game. If you purchase the game from EA's Origin store, you'll gain access to decals. So far the Steam version definitely seems like the one with the best pre-order bonus option given that plenty of people will likely want to stream their playthrough of the game playing as Gordon Freeman. That's not to mention a lot of modders will likely use the skin as an entryway into modding Final Fantasy XV and figuring out how the game's assets work. It's an inevitability either way when it comes to modding. If you're unsure which version of the game you want to purchase there's going to be a free demo made available starting February 26th so you can play-test the first chapter on PC via EA's Origin, the Windows Store, or Steam. The full game will be available starting March 6th on PC.
  12. Fortnite: Battle Royale has officially kicked off its third season, meaning players can expect to unlock a whole bunch of fresh in-game loot by playing oodles of matches over the next couple of months. As for this season's theme, Epic is taking players to outer space. To be clear, that whole "space" thing is not a nod toward a future second map for the Battle Royale game mode though, now that we've said it, we absolutely want it. Instead, it's a loose set of guidelines as to what players can expect out of this season's loot, most of which you can get a look at on the game's official site. Season two, which features a medieval theme, wrapped overnight and season three has officially gone live. It'll last until April 30. In case all of this season talk for a free-to-play, 100-player shooter is confusing, it basically means there's an extra tier of content players can choose to buy into in order to unlock additional loot. The season content doesn't really apply to Fortnite's Save the World cooperative mode, though any in-game currency earned there can be spent on the Battle Royale mode, and vice versa. The big feature of a season is the Battle Pass, which will set players back 950 V-Bucks, or about $10 in the real world. Again, you can earn V-Bucks by playing the game and, again, you can play the game without any restrictions without worrying about seasons or a Battle Pass. While playing through a season, you'll earn experience that unlocks in-game loot. This includes everything from temporary experience boosts to things like emotes, extra V-Bucks, dances, skins and the like. Nothing impacts gameplay, unless you count the fact that some skins (a giant pink plushie, for instance) are likely more visible on the map than others. If, however, you purchase a Battle Pass, you'll unlock even more stuff each time you level up, including a bundle of items the moment you purchase the pass. As noted above, this season's theme is space, so there is a trio of skins that put your character in space suits included in the Battle Pass, as well as a pick that looks like the arm of a space station and a skin that looks like a cross between The Rocketeer and Star Lord. While the second season offered 70 tiers of content to work through, Epic has announced that the third season includes a full 100 tiers. That means there's more loot to earn than last season, though boosts and experience have been balanced in a way that it should take around the same amount of time to play your way through. The Battle Pass is also retroactive so, if you play for a month and decide you want to buy in, you'll unlock everything from that extra tier that you would have earned had you purchased the pass on day one. Again, given the current state of microtransactions, we feel the need to reiterate that you can keep right on playing Battle Royale for zero dollars and get the same experience as everyone else. If you feel like dropping money or in-game currency on the Battle Pass, you'll simply unlock more skins and whatnot along the way. There's also been a refinement to the in-game challenges, and a new Hoverboard has been dropped into the cooperative mode for players who want to get around more quickly.
  13. When it comes to the all-digital future, there are still a lot of questions, loop holes, and various mechanisms that haven't been fully clarified to the general public, like an aspect of Nintendo's eShop, which recently came under fire from a European consumer advocacy institution. Norwegian gaming site, Press Fire, is reporting that the European Consumer Council has come down on Nintendo for not offering the option in the Nintendo eShop to cancel pre-orders. Polygon translated the article, explaining that in the letter the European Union Consumer Rights Directive mandates that consumers have protection when making purchases both retail and digital, and that when it comes to online purchases for digital goods that consumers should have the ability to cancel online purchases and have the ability to get a refund within two weeks of a purchase. The letter demands that Nintendo either explain how consumers are able to cancel pre-orders through the Nintendo eShop or withdraw from the commitment to a pre-purchase of digital software. Additionally, Nintendo is given the option of how the Nintendo eShop doesn't violate the European Union Consumer Rights Directive, where refunds are supposed to be mandatory along with the option of backing out of a digital sale. It does look especially bad, given that companies like Electronic Arts have actually been complying with the directive since starting up Origin, and even Valve eventually came around to adding the option to refund software after getting sued by Australia's ACCC outfit, which works as a consumer protection organization. Eventually Valve implemented the option to get refunds from purchases on Steam after losing the lawsuit. Now gamers can play a game for just under two hours before requesting a refund, or own it for up to two weeks before getting a refund. If Nintendo adopted a similar method, it would mean that gamers could playtest many games before committing to the purchase or get a refund two weeks after making the purchase. Nintendo would likely have to look into implementing time limits on the purchases so that people couldn't play through and beat the entire game within two weeks and then get a refund. That's already an issue for some Steam games where people purchase them and then spend an hour or so in the title, beat it and then refund it. Obviously this method doesn't work for games as large as Super Mario Odyssey or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but for a lot of smaller games it would apply. Nintendo is expected to respond to the Norwegian Consumer Council and address the concerns of the consumer advocacy group. If Nintendo doesn't have a plan to remedy the situation the way Valve, EA, Sony, Microsoft and even Blizzard managed to do, then it wouldn't be shocking to find out that the NCC could end up taking Nintendo to court over the issue. Usually the better way about these things is to just make sure that consumers are properly taken care of with the necessary options to cancel pre-orders, cancel pre-purchases, get refunds for games within a certain allotted time and also not have to worry about these things when making digital purchases.
  14. Bethesda's Doom for the Nintendo Switch launched with fairly positive reactions despite some of the technical drawbacks and performance issues. Well, to help compensate, the developers decided to issue an update that adds motion control mechanics to the game, so you can play in an entirely different way. The changelog was published over on the official Bethesda website, where it detailed the new motion aiming option for the first-person shooter. The developers made full use of the Joy-Con's gyroscopic controls, enabling gamers to use precision motion aiming in Doom. However, if you still want to use the traditional analog controls you can do that as well, combining both motion controls and the standard analog controls together. Bethesda decided to acknowledge the request from a lot of gamers who asked for the motion control support for the game after it launched late last year for the Nintendo Switch. It's funny because, back during the Wii era, there were plenty of gamers who didn't care about motion controls and actually requested Nintendo make some games where they didn't require the motion controls due to them being poorly implemented or the Wii sensor bar not properly picking up the motions. Times have changed, however, and the Nintendo Switch has a far more accurate reading on the gyroscopic sensors inside the Joy-Cons compared to the Wii's sensors for the Wii-motes. Nintendo did manage to fix the issue slightly with the Wii-mote enhancement accessory near the end of the Wii's life cycle but it was a little bit too late by then to make use of it. This time around Nintendo did a much better job making the motion controls intuitive and responsive, so you get some really precise readings from the movement of the Joy-Cons in relation to the game. Playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for instance, is pretty easy and very fun using the gyro controls with the Joy-Cons, and so Bethesda decided to extend that kind of playability to Doom by enabling the option to play with the motion controls. But, that's not all. The update also makes it easier to find and group up with your friends to play the multiplayer modes. The new multiplayer party system means you can group up with and play with your friends in multiplayer without having to go through the hassle of trying to track down and remember user names or schedule meetups through random games. Additionally, some optimizations were made in the form of improving the average resolution of the lower resolution areas of the game, so the average resolution is actually going to be higher than the standard lowest-res areas players would typically encounter, and this upgrade in resolution is being offset with new CPU optimizations so that you don't lose performance while also gaining better output rendering. A number of fixes were also made for some of the audio issues, texture stretching, and some of the control latency and unresponsiveness that would take place in the game menus. You can hop into Doom right now and check out the new update with the motion control support on the Nintendo Switch.
  15. What's better than watching your favorite game? How about earning free stuff in the game just for watching it? That seems to be the gist behind a new initiative from Blizzard that will help to lure in gamers to watch the Overwatch League on streaming services. Game Informer is reporting that it's possible to earn skins, emotes, and stickers just for watching games on Twitch. According to the article, with the second stage of the Overwatch League getting into full gear, there's the added benefit of earning virtual League Tokens for those who tune in. These League Tokens can be turned in for in-game rewards. This new program from Twitch is an experiment that the company might be using with more games in the future if it all works out with Blizzard's competitive shooter. You'll first have to make use of the Overwatch League's new "Cheering" feature, which rewards players for cheering with a virtual Bits item that can be used during the live-streams. As you use the Bits you can begin to unlock limited League items, such as team hero skins, emotes and team-branded items. Bits are acquired and can only be used in conjunction with affiliates and partners, in addition to purchasing the Bits with real money. Interestingly enough, you can buy 1000 bits for $10 even, or purchase 100 bits for $1.40. The $10 offering is a special first-time buyers option with a 27% off discount. Regularly the 1500 bits go for $19.95, while the upper end of the Twitch currency goes for $308 if you want 25000 Bits. You can expend these Bits by cheering. You simply type in the cheer message into the chat and you'll cheer for the designated team. The more Bits you use to cheer, the more you'll support Twitch, the affiliates, and your Overwatch League team. As a reward for cheering on your team, you'll unlock League Tokens that can then be used to purchase items and unlock limited time gear in the actual Overwatch game. Of course, if you don't want to spend real money just to unlock in-game items via cheering in Twitch, you can also earn one League Token just for watching a single match. Randomly, Twitch will also give out 100 Tokens for those watching Overwatch League matches. So there's an incentive to just watching the streams on Twitch You'll also need a Battle.net account that you'll need to link to your Twitch, MLG.com and the OverwatchLeague.com channel. Keep in mind that linking your account with the social services also means that your behavior in Overwatch will be monitored and linked to your behavior on those social media services, so avoid being toxic in the Twitch chat or comments, otherwise Blizzard may take action against your account. Don't be surprised if people buy a bunch of Bits and then spam chat with cheers to earn League Tokens in order to acquire the rare League skins, emotes and sprays in Overwatch. Blizzard also has other plans in the pipeline to bring in more viewers to the League games on Twitch.
  16. News has been slim concerning future updates for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, but it looks like the team is finally gearing up to break that silence. They've got some new features on the way for 2018, as well as the usual dose of tweaks and fixes. Oh, and it's probably worth noting that a new map is also in development. That last item is likely the most exciting for many PUBG players, even though the game's second map only released a couple of months ago and most players still haven't had time to fully explore it. Still, based on a recent update via the game's Steam blog, the team is hard at work on some new features, presumably due out in the next several months, including a new location. In March, the team will reveal what you can expect from us in the first half of 2018 in terms of our development and new content plans which, by the way, include a new map. In other words, we're only about a month out, tops, before the curtain gets pulled back on the 2018 road map for PUBG updates. The announcement points out that there are a number of reasons it has taken so long for the team to break the silence. While they don't go into all of the details, it is made clear that anti-cheating measures have been a big part of the equation. Sadly, development on the game had to pump the breaks a bit in order for the team to get a handle on in-game abusers. If you're curious why we just can't have nice things, it's because of dirty, rotten cheaters gumming up the works. All of that aside, it sounds like PUBG fans have a lot to look forward to, especially a new location to explore. Through almost the entire early access phase of the game, players were restricted to just a single map. Sure, that map was massive and highly detailed, but its design also had a big impact on how folks played the game and what tactics were most successful. Even so, it certainly says a lot about how solid the game's formula is if PUBG managed to become the biggest breakout hit of 2017 with only a single map and mode to enjoy. The game's second map finally arrived on PC in December and, since the new map isn't being revealed until next month, we wouldn't be surprised if we're looking at a summer date for actual launch. Still, that means players will have plenty of time to become super familiar with that second map before having the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of a fresh location. Outside of that, the announcement states that the team is working to make the "battle royale experience" more extensive, as well as making improvements to modifications to make gameplay both deeper and more realistic. Since PUBG's major competitor, Fortnite: Battle Royale, is sticking to a path that's more cartoony in terms of aesthetics and more limited in terms of stock guns with no modifications, it's probably a wise idea for PUBG to double down on the aspects that help set it apart.
  17. With Burnout Paradise Remastered set for a March 16 launch, EA has announced that the popular racing game has been revitalized to look and sound great on modern consoles. But, according to a recent update, one modern flare that will be missing from the game is microtransactions. When a game gets remastered, it's not uncommon for developers/publishers to plug in new features that maybe weren't as prevalent when the game first launched. Folks got a bit wary following yesterday's announcement that Burnout Paradise Remastered was set to launch in a few weeks, as the game's listing included the phrase "in-game purchases optional." Given the current state of gaming, you'd be forgiven for assuming that meant the upcoming open-world racer would include microtransactions or even, gulp, loot boxes. Based on a tweet from EA's Ben Walke, however, it appears there is no cause for concern. Just a heads up, but the store listing for Purnout Paradise that mentions 'in-game purchases optional' is an error. There is no MTX or any additional paid-for content. Pitchforks down, please. MTX is short for "microtransaction," which Walke is now stating will definitely not be a part of the Burnout Paradise Remastered package. Still, it's not hard to understand why folks were so eager to, as Walke phrases it, take up their pitchforks and cry foul. Over the last several months, microtransactions and loot boxes have been in the spotlight for a number of reasons, almost exclusively negative. The big hubbub started last fall with Star Wars: Battlefront II, which we won't rehash here. Suffice it to say that things got so bad that world governments and lawmakers have since got involved and, by extension, other games with similar practices have come under fire. Battlefront II is published by EA, which is pegged as being one of the major drivers of this microtransaction culture modern games have slipped into. Since loot boxes and other types of microtransactions are being plugged into just about every game to launch under EA's banner, it stands to reason the company might consider a similar practice with a remaster of Burnout Paradise. The game's announcement states that all DLC is included in the initial package, but that doesn't mean that all of that content wouldn't be unlocked via a progression system driven by loot boxes (that you could buy more of for additional real-world money) in the remaster. There are lots of vehicles to unlock, after all, and it's easy to envision the above scenario if the game was just a standard launch instead of a last-gen remaster. Despite the fear expressed by the community, however, Walke is saying there's no need to panic. Based on what he's offered, it looks like Burnout Paradise Remastered will be a one-and-done purchase of $40. End of story.
  18. If you're still debating jumping into the VR market, Sony recently offered the sweetest deal to date. They've knocked a hundred bucks off of the price of a core bundle, as well as discounts on bundles featuring games like DOOM VFR and Skyrim VR. Over on the PlayStation Blog, they've revealed that the PlayStation VR headset will be available for $199.99 for a limited time, down from the usual $299 price point that was itself lowered this past fall with the launch of refreshed hardware. You've got a bit of time to make a purchasing decision, as the PSVR discount will be live through March 3. Until then, you can grab the standalone headset for $199. If you've already got a PlayStation Camera or just want to buy one separately, that's not a bad way to go. If, however, you want the whole shebang and a game to get you started, some bundles have been discounted, too. The DOOM VFR bundle, for instance, is $299.99 for this promotion. That set includes the VR headset, the PlayStation Camera, a PS VR demo disc with a bunch of games and, of course, a copy of DOOM VFR. If you want to throw some move controllers into the mix, then you'll want to check out the Skyrim VR bundle. While most PSVR games can be played with a standard controller, some are enhanced with a Move controller in each hand. Skyrim VR is just such a title. This bundle includes all of the hardware from the DOOM kit, swaps out the game for Skyrim, and throws a pair of Move controllers into the mix for a total of $349.99. In other words, whether you're buying the headset by itself or one of the bundles, they're all $100 off for a limited time. It's easy to look at hardware going on sale and wonder if "something is up." For the PSVR, though, we think this is just an aggressive move to shift even more headsets into living rooms. Unlike the Vita, Sony continues to support PSVR in a big way. The headset is only a year in and already it has moved more units than other platforms, combined. Teams are also starting to feel more comfortable with VR development, as highlighted by a wider variety and number of games hitting the market these days. Plus, they've got Moss launching next week, which won over audiences with its adorable mouse protagonist during E3 2017. Bravo Team also looks to be a big draw this year and, based on the report, the existing library of 150-plus games is set to be bolstered by more than 130 by the end of the year. In other words, it looks like the iron is hot and Sony is continuing to strike it with regularly occurring promotions such as this one. The PSVR may not be top of the line tech, but it's more than enough to get the job done well. Also, that price is impossible to beat right now so, if you're still on the fence, you've got through March 3 to make your purchasing decision.
  19. The DC Extended Universe is a tricky place. In stark juxtaposition to the methodical releases from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC has attempted to quickly pay catch up in order to hold a candle against its competitor. But The DCEU has had a habit of announcing exciting new projects and/or directors, before things ultimately fall through. A handful of directors have dropped major projects in the universe, like Rick Famuyiwa or Zack Snyder. Now it's happened again, as Joss Whedon has officially left the Batgirl movie. The internet basically exploded with this revelation, and now Nightwing director Chris McKay has revealed the only way he'd ever depart his upcoming superhero movie. I'm pretty sure WB are going to have to fire me if they want me to leave Nightwing. Well, that's one director who we can expect to stick with his project. Considering how often the Lego Batman Movie director tweets out about Nightwing, he better follow through for the fandom. Chris McKay's tweet revealed his determination to make Nightwing is sure to be a relief for the many DC fans who are dismayed by Joss Whedon's recent departure from the Batgirl movie. News of Whedon's involvement set the internet ablaze, despite his less than stellar outing completing Zack Snyder's Justice League. Considering his tenure working on strong female characters like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Black Widow in The Avengers, Whedon seemed like the ideal choice. Unfortunately, he announced his separation from the project yesterday after failing to find a proper story to tell. Similarly, Chris McKay seemed like an excellent choice to direct Nightwing, due to his prior work within the Batman mythos. The Lego Batman Movie was met with critical acclaim and box office success, and showed what a massive Bat-fan McKay is. As such, he's a great choice to bring Dick Grayson aka Nightwing to the silver screen for a new generation. The closest thing we got was that Chris O'Donnell in Batman & Robin, and it wasn't the character's finest showing. The DC Extended Universe, while still very much in its infancy, has had a very hard time nailing directors down. While Zack Snyder built the universe through his work in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, he ended up departing Justice League in the wake of a family tragedy. Ezra Miller's Flash movie has faced similar struggles, having already lost its director twice. This started with the departure of Seth Grahame-Smith, which was followed by Rick Famuyiwa. Finally, Jaume Collet-Serra departed Suicide Squad 2 a few months ago, leading to uncertainty in the DCEU. At least for now, the development of Nightwing is continuing and Chris McKay is planning on holding onto the project with white knuckles. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
  20. Fans are used to seeing various characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe appear together, but if you've already picked up a digital copy of Thor Ragnarok, you may have seen a crossover that was quite unexpected, Yondu on Asgard. But wait a minute, that doesn't make any sense. How did Yondu end up in the latest Thor movie? As it turns out the "deleted scene" was really more of an outtake, and it was never actually meant to be in the film. As to why Michael Rooker would get transformed into Yondu just for fun, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, director revealed he was in makeup already for something else entirely. According to James Gunn... For those of you asking me how a Yondu deleted scene is on the Thor Ragnarok extras - I believe Rooker was at the lot shooting his bit for the Guardians Mission Breakout ride/Halloweeen version, and he stopped by the Thor set to goof around. Rooker, correct me if I'm wrong. The scene in question takes place after Hela has taken control of most of Asgard. She's threatening the lives of the citizens unless she's told where Heimdall and the rest of the people are hiding. In the movie, she gets her information with only a little resistance, however, in this additional version of the scene, Yondu interrupts Skurge's execution to ask where Kevin and Lou's offices are. He's given directions, and he wanders off-screen. Of course, there is no Kevin or Lou in Thor: Ragnarok. Kevin is Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and Lou is Louis D'Esposito, Marvel Studios co-president. This shot was never going to be in the film; instead, it was just Rooker and director Taika Waititi having a bit of fun. And now, thanks to James Gunn, we understand why the fun could be had. Michael Rooker was in full Yondu makeup because he was filming scenes for the Guardians of the Galaxy ride at Disneyland. The ride changed up during Halloween and became Monsters After Dark, with brand new material that wasn't part of the main ride. Most of the main ride shots were done alongside Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so little extra work was required, but apparently, everybody had to go back to handle the Halloween stuff. This now explains even more, as last year Michael Rooker aired a live stream of himself wandering the Marvel offices also in full Yondu makeup. He didn't say why he was dressed up then, only referring to something secret. Now, it all makes sense as these events appear to have coincided. If you want to check out the scene of Yondu on Asgard, you can pick up a digital version of Thor: Ragnarok which is available now or you grab the Blu-Ray when it arrives March 6.
  21. It's been an exciting time for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ryan Coogler's Black Panther arrived in theaters one week ago, bringing the fictional country of Wakanda to the the silver screen for the first time. The blockbuster has been breaking box office records, and has already become a very significant moment in both pop culture and the world of superhero movies. Just about every aspect of Black Panther has been praised, with satisfied moviegoers known to shout and tweet "Wakanda Forever!" in response. Unfortunately, this popularity is complicating things a bit for the small town of Wauconda, Illinois. Since the release of Black Panther, the village of Wauconda has been set upon by cinephiles and Marvel fans alike. The name is pronounced the same as the fictional country, leading to an abundance of prank phone calls to the mayor's office and town hall. THR recently spoke to Alise Homola, the executive assistant to Wauconda. After the film debuted, the calls starting coming in. At first, I was like, is there a full moon out? Someone called and asked how we pronounced the village name and when I told him, he began yelling, 'Wakanda forever!' which I am guessing is from the film. Despite being inundated with phone calls about Black Panther, it seems that Alise Homola hasn't bothered to try and see the movie. She's just going to keep doing her job, and wait for the excitement around the superhero movie to die down. There's just one problem: it's not clear exactly when that could be. Black Panther keeps breaking box office records, despite only being in theaters for one week's time. Ryan Coogler's superhero movie blew past the total gross of the DCEU's Justice League in just a few days, and is tied for second as the highest grossing Thursday opening for any MCU movie. Additionally, it's sitting on a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomaotes, the best score of the shared universe. With word of mouth helping to keep moviegoers shelling out cash to be transported to Wakanda, the little town in Illinois is probably going to get plenty of more weird phone calls before Black Panther ends its theatrical run. While Black Panther's Wakanda is hidden country with vast technological advancements, Wauconda, Illinois is not quite as exciting. Rather than sitting on the world's supply of Vibranium, Waucaonda has a population of 13,758. Vibranium is actually one of things that Alise Homola is most asked about during her phone calls with Marvel fans. Perhaps some of the town's offices could get new numbers, in an attempt to spare themselves from more awkward conversations. Black Panther is in theaters now, and is showing no signs of slowing down. T'Challa and a few other characters will pop back up in Avengers: Infinity War on May 4th. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
  22. The Uncharted video game series is one that seems perfect for a cinematic adaptation. This is why it surprised a lot of people when it was decided that the first Uncharted movie wouldn't be based on any game. Rather than tell a story of one of Nathan Drake's swashbuckling adventures, the upcoming Uncharted movie will be a prequel to the games, starring Tom Holland as a Drake before he became the globe-trotting hero. Neil Druckmann, the creative lead at Naughty Dog, the game studio behind Uncharted, thinks this is actually the right way to go because if you want to see a cinematic version of Uncharted 's hero, you can just play the games. According to Druckmann... We used to just be excited--oh my god, movies are looking at us! There could be an Uncharted movie on the screen, and then as more time passes on, we're not excited by a direct adaptation of the story we told, because we feel we've already told that story very well cinematically, so I don't know what else you could bring to it. The Uncharted games clearly take inspiration from the Indiana Jones film series, as they focus on Nathan Drake, a man who travels the world searching for valuable historic artifacts. As such, the games were designed to come across like a movie in a lot of ways. The latter games especially were very good at transitioning between gameplay sections and storytelling sections seamlessly, so as not to take the player out of the story. But, of course, this is exactly why Uncharted movies would seem to make perfect movies, there's less adaptation that needs to be done and more direct translation, potentially making Uncharted the movie that could break the curse of the video game adaptation. However, as Neil Druckmann tells Gamespot, in the end, whatever gets put on screen in a direct adaptation is going to be compared to the games, and whatever happens, some aspects will be found lacking. The main character will never look or sound the way fans of the games see him, and it seems that Druckmann already knows that whatever voice Drake spoke with on a screen wouldn't sound right to his ears, since voice actor Nolan North is the real voice of Nathan Drake. The same goes for the leads in Naughty's Dog's other big game set for a cinematic adaptation, The Last of Us. For me--and I know for Naughty Dog and for a lot of our fans--Nolan North is Nathan Drake. Ashley Johnson is Ellie. Troy Baker is Joel. It would be very disorienting to see someone else in that role. Perhaps the movie makers realized this as well, which is why they made the decision to make a prequel instead. Perhaps, if Uncharted movies are successful, Tom Holland can grow into his own Nathan Drake, so things won't feel so off when he becomes the grown-up hero in his own right.
  23. Tessa Thompson has established herself as one of the film industry's great rising stars, and in the last few years has had the opportunity to work with some of the best young filmmakers around. In fact, this weekend sees her do it again, as she is featured in Alex Garland's Annihilation... but there's a bit of a funny story behind that relationship. As it happens, their collaboration is destiny of sorts, as Thompson actually promised herself she would work with Garland immediately after she saw 2013's Ex Machina for the first time: I was really familiar with Alex Garland without knowing how familiar I was. I had seen Ex Machina, and I swear to you I saw that movie and said, 'I will work with him.' Not because I knew I would, just because I knew I wanted to really badly. I learned about this funny "origin story" earlier this month when I had the pleasure of sitting down with Tessa Thompson for a one-on-one interview during the Los Angeles press day for Annihilation. Being personally a fan of Alex Garland's past work -- including his scripts for films like 28 Days Later and Sunshine -- I asked about her familiarity with the filmmaker prior to signing on to work with him. It was in response to this question that the actress told me the above story about putting a message into the universe after first seeing Garland's directorial debut. It seems that she was really blown away by Ex Machina, and immediately knew that she wanted to have the filmmaker as a collaborator. Tessa Thompson's research didn't stop there, however. After realizing just how much she wanted to work with the filmmaker behind Ex Machina, she began digging into his filmography, and discovered not only that she was familiar with him, but actually a big fan going back to The Beach: the Danny Boyle-directed film starring Leonardo DiCaprio that was based on Garland's first novel. Said the actress, So and then in learning more about Alex after that I realized, 'Oh, Alex with The Beach!' That book and then subsequent movie made a whole generation of young people want to go to Thailand! He created that thing like, 'Go to Thailand!' That was funny and interesting, and then I realized all of the films that Alex has written over time, and so realized that I was far more familiar with his work than I originally thought. And that, of course, solidified really, really wanting to work with him. Fortunately, Tessa Thompson didn't have to wait long to work with Alex Garland. She is not only a key player in the filmmaker's sophomore effort, Annihilation, but she puts on a performance much different than roles we've seen from her in the past. It's quite something to see -- and you can actually see it for yourself now. The new movie is now in theaters everywhere in the United States, and after you check it out be sure to return here to CinemaBlend for more from my interviews with the director and stars.
  24. For comic book fans, to see what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become is rather extraordinary. In the last 10 years we have seen characters hit the big screen that we never expected to be portrayed in live-action, and as a result one can only imagine the heroes and villains we'll get to meet in another 10. There are hundreds if not thousands of fan favorites still waiting to be adapted -- but if Thor: Ragnarok VFX Supervisor Jake Morrison had his druthers, he would bring the legendary Beta Ray Bill to the movie world. He recently told me, I think I would love to do something with Beta Ray Bill, having been in the Thor universe for a good while. We put a small Easter egg on the tower in Sakaar, which is great fun, but I think he's such a cool character, and the Walt Simonson run in the comics, that one, that iconic cover with Beta Ray Bill in full regalia, clashing with the Mighty Thor. I think that's an immensely cool moment. With Thor: Ragnarok arriving on DigitalHD this week, I recently had the chance to hop on the phone with Jake Morrison to chat about his latest work. Because of Morrison's history with the franchise - having worked on Iron Man 2, Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World and Ant-Man -- I asked him if there was any specific character that he would love the chance to play around with. After struggling to pick from the literal thousands of options Marvel has created over the years, he decided to pick the famed horse-faced Korbinite who is notably one of the few in the universe worthy of carrying Mjolnir -- as depicted on the cover of The Mighty Thor #338: For those unfamiliar with the character, Beta Ray Bill was a creation of Marvel legend Walter Simonson for his run on Thor. He is the champion of his race and a noble hero - which is why he is deemed worthy to carry Mjolnir and possess the powers of the God of Thunder. As noted by Jake Morrison, there is a subtle nod to him in Thor: Ragnarok, as his face is one of the ones depicted on the Tower attached to the gladiator arena, but fans are still hoping that the character could have a legitimate role in a movie someday. A few months back, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige mentioned that Beta Ray Bill was considered for a part in Thor: Ragnarok, but because the role wouldn't have been significant enough they decided to "do it later." At this current point in time it's really hard to pin down exactly when "later" may be -- especially because Chris Hemsworth has been discussing the end of his Marvel contract -- but hopefully we will eventually see a day where the legendary character makes his legit live-action debut.
