  1. The biopic genre has changed and evolved in recent years, with a number of fantastic films like Straight Outta Compton and Steve Jobs offering up interesting looks at real life characters. That said, a biopic inherently comes with a certain amount of risk because it often involves adapting the life of someone with still-living relatives and loved ones. That's something that Judy, the upcoming Judy Garland biopic starring Renee Zellweger, is currently facing, as Garland's daughter, Liza Minnelli, has confirmed that she is not happy about the film. In a recent Facebook post, the Academy Award-winner addressed rumors that she approved of the film and wrote: I have never met nor spoken to Renee Zellweger... I don't know how these stories get started, but I do not approve nor sanction the upcoming film about Judy Garland in any way. Any reports to the contrary are 100% Fiction. This Facebook post came after a recent report that Liza Minnelli had met and bonded with Renee Zellweger over the development and production of Judy. In reality, the Arrested Development alum has never met the Bridget Jones actress. Moreover, Minnelli used the post to confirm that she does not condone the upcoming biopic about her mother's life, indicating that there have been erroneous reports of her lending her support and approval to Judy. Of course, it is worth noting that Liza Minnelli's remarks about the Judy Garland biopic come on the heels of our first look at Renee Zellweger as her mother, which dropped online a few months ago. You can check it out, below. So while there arguably is a resemblance between the Oscar winner and the woman that she's portraying, it looks like at least one member of Judy Garland's estate isn't thrilled about the situation. Judy Garland is one of those figures that Hollywood has maintained a deep fascination with for years. As such, the development of a biopic based on the Wizard of Oz actress' life has consistently popped up, with different actors reportedly in the running for the role at various points in time. Renee Zellweger is now the actress who will take on the part, but Ocean's 8 actress Anne Hathaway was similarly in the running to take on the role years ago. For now, CinemaBlend will make sure to bring you more information related to the development and production of Judy as new details are made available to us. The film doesn't currently have a set release date, but you can head over to our movie premiere guide to keep yourself in-the-loop on the 2018 movies that are presently scheduled.
  2. We still have more than a year to go until Disney's live action adaptation of Mulan arrives, but 2018 marks the anniversary of its animated predecessor's release. As the second-to-last movie of the Disney Renaissance, Mulan was another big success for the studio in 1998, earning many positive reviews and making over $304 million worldwide. And like most of the popular Disney movies from that era, Mulan was a musical, with songs like "I'll Make a Man Out of You" and "Reflection" still fondly remembered. However, a song that ended up being cut from Mulan was called "Keep 'Em Guessing," and it had Eddie Murphy's Mushu, Mulan's miniature dragon sidekick, advising her on how to keep her cover as a male soldier. Regarding why the song wasn't included in the finalized cut, here's what lyricist David Zippel had to say: We wrote three different versions of it. But that's because we didn't understand at that point that it wasn't that [Eddie Murphy] wasn't liking our songs, he just didn't want to sing in the film. It's been a long time since I've watched Mulan in its entirety, but after reading the above quote, I do remember that Mushu did indeed not belt out any tunes during the movie. Well, unless you count when Eddie Murphy says, "This guy's got 'em scared to death" during "I'll Make a Man Out of You." While Murphy was all too happy to play Mulan's comedic relief, as David Zippel (who worked on the movie's musical elements with composer Matthew Wilder) revealed to EW, evidently the actor wasn't interested in singing in the movie at all. Fortunately, Mushu still had plenty to do throughout Mulan, so it's not like his role took a major beating just because Murphy didn't lend his vocal talents to a musical number or two. With the live action Mulan movie coming up, one might wonder if this means that the new version of Mushu, unlike Eddie Murphy's iteration, will lead his own musical number. The only problem with that assumption is that so far, there's no indication that Mushu will even be a character in this new adaptation. In fact, with the basic premise of Mulan disguising herself as a man so she can take her father's place in the army, this new Mulan movie sounds quite different from its predecessor, from a sorceress taking Shan Yu's place as the main villain to a new character named Chen Honghui serving as the eponymous protagonist's love interest. Hell, while director Niki Caro has said that music will play an important role in the new Mulan movie, we don't even know if this version will be a musical. So basically, it'd be best not to compare the live action Mulan adaptation too much to the animated movie when it comes out; they sound like two incredibly different beasts. The live action Mulan movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 27, 2020, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress. In the meantime, you can look through our 2018 release schedule to learn what movies are coming out later this year.
  3. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always been successful, Phase Three has been on another level. Every single blockbuster has crushed, with Avengers: Infinity War bringing the shared universe's characters together for an epic and horrifying battle against Thanos. In the end the bad guy won, and the Mad Titan wiped out half the galaxy with the snap of a finger. But it looks like two dusted characters are going to meet eventually: Nick Fury and T'Challa aka Black Panther. Samuel L. Jackson has been open about his disappointment in not starring in Black Panther, and recently revealed that Marvel ensured him the two heroes would be meeting in the future. It was just like, 'Ehh, nah. We're good. Nick Fury and Black Panther will meet somewhere. But not there.' Well, this is exciting. While fans have no idea what to expect in Avengers 4 and beyond, the idea of Nick Fury and T'Challa sharing a scene is enough to get hearts pounding. And just when you thought we'd seen every crossover possible. Samuel L. Jackson's comments to ET is just the most recent time the legendary actor has expressed his interest in meeting Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther. Ryan Coogler's blockbuster made movie and superhero history, becoming a massive pop culture moment in the process. Box office records were broken, and the significance of having a black superhero movie directed by a black filmmaker was not lost on the public. Coogler assembled an outstanding cast including Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Sterling K. Brown, Forest Whitaker, and Michael B. Jordan. It stands to reason that Jackson would want to be included in such a company, although that didn't end up happening. Given Nick Fury's history in the MCU, it would have made sense if he appeared Black Panther. Samuel L. Jackson's signature Marvel character brought together the original Avengers, and seems very aware of the planet's various superpowered entities. But given the huge roster of characters and films in Phase Three, he's mostly been pushed to the side. The character didn't pop up at all until the post-credits scene of Infinity War, heralding Captain Marvel for assistance. Luckily, Nick Fury will be returning to the MCU in a more significant way through Captain Marvel, Carl Davner's origin story set in the 1990's. After that, it's unclear if and when Fury could return. Fans are assuming that the characters lost in Thanos' snap of death will eventually be revived, but there's no guarantees. What is guaranteed is that whatever happens, Nick Fury will apparently come face to face with Wakanda's protector and King. Avengers: Infinity War is in theaters now, and Captain Marvel will arrive on March 8, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
  4. Although the big story coming out of this past weekend was the record-breaking performance of Incredibles 2 at the box office, another new release is making news, but probably not for the reasons those involved with it might have hoped. The new biopic Gotti, starring John Travolta as the notorious crime boss John Gotti, is currently sitting at an ignominious 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. That score may only be calculated from 26 reviews, but it still reveals Gotti to be a critical bomb. This drubbing must have come as something of a shock for two-time Oscar nominee John Travolta, as a new report says that the actor thought Gotti would be an awards contender. According to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, John Travolta worked tirelessly to promote Gotti because he seriously believed that his performance as the mafia boss would put him in the conversation as a major player come awards season. This was a passion project years in the making for the actor, and he even joined social media for the first time to promote it. In fact, John Travolta worked to get the film a full-fledged theatrical release versus a dual release on VOD to allow for a heavy awards campaign. So it had to be quite the stinging blow when Gotti was savaged by critics, almost certainly dashing any hopes of recognition come awards time. On the surface, you can see why John Travolta thought Gotti had awards potential. It has all the makings of a contender. It is a crime drama and a biopic, both genres that the Academy and other bodies are more enthusiastic about and have no problem giving awards to each year. Gotti also chronicles the life of an infamous American gangster, complete with family drama and courtroom intrigue; all material ripe for powerful storytelling, and thus awards consideration. As for John Travolta himself, he probably saw his portrayal of John Gotti, with makeup and all, as the kind of transformative performance to play a larger than life historical figure that critics and award voters eat up and lavish with praise and gold statues. And John Travolta has recently received awards consideration for his portrayal of Robert Shapiro in American Crime Story, so he probably felt that he was on top of his game and on track for a Travoltaissance. But in this instance, the whole was less than the sum of its parts and despite having some hallmarks of an awards contender, Gotti couldn't even make it to the ring. Although less than ideal, a poor critical response to a film isn't always a death sentence at the box office. Sometimes movies are immune to critical response and find a receptive public regardless, however that does not appear to be the case with Gotti, at least not as far as the box office is concerned. According to The Wrap, Gotti earned just $1.67 million on 503 screens this weekend. While not a total flop based on the low theater count, Gotti would have had to make around $3 million opening weekend to be viewed as a successful debut. On the bright side, the audience scores for Gotti, for whatever they are worth, are much more positive, although they won't help John Travolta win any awards. Rather than submit to the negative reviews, Gotti, like the man it's based on, is defiant, calling critics trolls in a new ad. That won't help with awards, but maybe it will peak audience curiosity to check the film out. You can judge for yourself, as Gotti is in theaters now.
  5. Warning: Spoilers for Incredibles 2 are in play. If you haven't seen the film for yourself, please bookmark this story, and come back when you've caught up Throughout both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, we've followed the adventures of the Parr family and their super-powered antics in a world where heroes are illegal. In the world of the films, Mr. Incredible has always been a big deal, with Incredibles 2 making a point to draw the comedy out of the fact that his storied crime-fighting career doesn't mean he's the best hope for legalizing superheroes once again. But after seeing the film a second time, a question burrowed its way into my mind, undermining all of my previous thoughts: is Mr. Incredible really that good of a superhero to begin with? After some thought, and careful consideration, I have to say that no, he really isn't. I don't mean to knock Bob Parr or his Incredible alter ego, but take a look at the stats from the moments we've seen in his career. For starters, Winston and Evelyn Deavor's risk analysis portfolio only confirmed something we saw in The Incredibles and its sequel: wherever Mr. Incredible goes, mass property destruction follows. Now that's fine when you're fighting an Omnidroid on a tropical island that doesn't happen to be inhabited by a town the size of Municiberg or Metroville; but when you're in two towns that happen to have monorail service, and you've destroyed at least part of both, your record isn't exactly the best when it comes to saving the day. Not to mention, while Bob's strength is still his best asset, Mr. Incredible has another nasty habit: his major villains always seem to get away in the opening of an Incredibles film. Both Bomb Voyage and The Underminer are still on the loose, free to commit as much wanton destruction and thievery as they please. With Bomb Voyage, there's obviously the excuse of Buddy, aka Syndrome, being a distraction at the worst time possible, so that's a slight bit of slack. But with The Underminer, Bob was so clumsy he got sucked into The Underminer's vehicle, and in the process of brawling with his nemesis, he smashes the controls that could have stopped the drill from penetrating through valuable city infrastructure. The truth is, in the world of The Incredibles, Elastigirl actually is the better hero. Between being a certified pilot -- which has helped her survive two high-flying attempts on her life and the lives of those around her -- and an amazingly adept problem solver, she's like the Sherlock Holmes of the Incredibles universe. Taking both films as a mirror image of the same plot, Elastigirl figures out the villain's plot by asking the right questions; while Mr. Incredible only stumbles onto Syndrome's evil plans after he's successfully lured into an attempt on his life, endangering his family in the process. Again, I don't want to draw all of the credit away from Robert Parr's super abilities. The man is pretty damned strong, and in the confines of a super team like that of his family unit in Incredibles 2, he's a valuable asset. Not to mention, as a character, seeing the Bob we knew from The Incredibles progress into an even more loving and supportive father, while also nurturing his kid's own powers, is something beautiful to behold. Hell, he even figured out New Math once he really put his mind to it, so clearly, he's not totally useless! But if he's really going to sit there and wonder just why he was sidelined for a good part of Incredibles 2's plot, or if he's wondering how he can up his hero game and become a better super powered man, he might just want to go back to the video tape and study his past just a little harder.
  6. James Gunn let the cat out of the bag shortly after Pacific Rim Uprising hit theaters. The Guardians of the Galaxy shepherd was lending his talents for an on-screen cameo in Steven S. DeKnight's high-powered sequel. And yet, no sooner did Gunn reveal it, then he also shared that the scene in question had been cut. So, with Pacific Rim Uprising hitting DVD this week (today, to be specific), we hopped on the phone with DeKnight and asked if Gunn's cameo would be made available as a deleted scene, and he graciously confirmed: I got to tell you, that was the first thing I insisted on being on the DVD. Yes, you get to see James Gunn as the deejay, which broke my heart that it got cut out because it just delighted me every time I saw it. We were shooting this party scene as part of the pickups for the movie, and it was in Malibu. And I thought, I know James kind of socially. We're like admirers of each other. He was a big fan of Spartacus and I met him at the premiere of Guardians of the galaxy when I was working on daredevil and we have a bunch of mutual friends. So I thought I needed a DJ. We actually first went out to Guillermo [Del Toro]. But Guillermo was out of the country. So I thought, 'Ugh, Malibu. Who do I know?' And I thought, 'James Gunn lives in Malibu! It'd be a short drive.' So I reached out to James, and frankly he was available. It was just such a gas. I mean, he really threw himself into it and it still makes me laugh. I'm so glad it's on the DVD. As much as I love the idea of James Gunn playing a Malibu deejay at a house party hosted by John Boyega's spoiled military brat, Jake Pentecost, I will say that the sight of original Pacific Rim helmer Guillermo Del Toro behind the turntables would have been a clever cameo, and a sweet passing of the baton from the first director to his successor. Still, the Gunn cameo will be a nice treat once we pop the DVD into a nearby player. Want a tease? Gunn tweeted this shot of him in character earlier this year: Now we're eager to see the scene in full, to see how James Gunn would tear it up as SoCal's nasty record-spinner. The rest of the movie's pretty great, too, so this is just colorful gravy. Pacific Rim Uprising is available on digital, 4K Ultra HD, 3D Blu-ray, and DVD as we speak, and is absolutely worth a pick up.
  7. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed the world of filmmaking forever. Shared universes have become commonplace, with audiences accustomed to serialized, detail-oriented storytelling. But considering the MCU has been alive for ten years, there's bound to be a few continuity errors. Fans recently noted an inconsistency with Guardians of the Galaxy and Infinity War, specifically related to Gamora's backstory and home planet. Because although Thanos reveals massacring half the population of Zen-Whoberi ultimately saved the planet, her mugshot in Guardians claims she was its sole survivor. Check it out below. As the above image reveals, Guardians of the Galaxy actually sets quite a different background for Gamora. While still the kidnapped and deadly adoptive daughter of Thanos, Zen-Whoberi's denizens were completely extinct according to James Gunn's original blockbuster. But The Russo Brothers had their hands full crafting Infinity War and Avengers 4, and they needed to make some changes to give the story an emotional punch. James Gunn had a ton of set up to do with Guardians of the Galaxy, introducing each member of the motley crew and eventually uniting the group against a common enemy. The Guardians first clash on Xandar, before being sent to an intergalactic prison. There, the characters' backstories were quickly exposed, along with Star-Lord's middle finger. A renewed focus on Gamora's home planet came with Avengers: Infinity War, as her history with Thanos was expanded. Gamora has known about Thanos' quest to destroy half the galaxy since she was a young girl, and Thanos invaded Zen-Whoberi. The Mad Titan wiped out half of the population, including killing Gamora's parents in front of her. Thanos maintained the planet was now thriving because of it, revealing there are still plenty of inhabitants on Gamora's home planet. While the hardcore fans might take umbrage with this change in the canon, it's not earth shattering in the grand scheme of things. The MCU has done great with keeping its story streamlined, but The Russo Brothers had a lot on their plate for their two Avengers movies. In addition to juggling the myriad characters and all-star cast, the brothers made special note to make Infinity War an emotional journey. Thanos' conquering of Zen-Whoberi helped flesh out his personal relationship with his daughter, as well as his logic in attempting to destroy half the galaxy. With the news that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will definitely be set after the events of Infinity War, it's unclear how Gamora and the Guardians might be brought back to life. We'll just have to wait and see when Avengers 4 arrives in theaters on May 3rd, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
  8. The Marvel Cinematic Universe received a fantastic new hero in 2016 when Captain America: Civil War introduced Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa, and he got to finally take center stage earlier this year when Ryan Coogler's Black Panther premiered on the big screen. Boseman has handily turned into an icon for his take on the Wakandan king, but now he wants to spread some of the love around. With that in mind, the actor was awarded the Best Hero honor during the MTV Movie & TV Awards, but he quickly gave it away to the man who thwarted the Tennessee Waffle House shooting earlier this year. The whole thing happened last night when Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman took the stage to collect his Best Hero award at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Boseman was initially appreciative of the honor when he went to receive the statue, but then he quickly turned the audience's attention to a real hero in the audience by addressing James Shaw Jr. The actor thanked Shaw for stopping a shooter who walked into a Tennessee Waffle House with a gun and opened fire back in April (saving multiple lives in the process), and then invited the real-life badass to join him on the stage. From there, Boseman bestowed the Best Hero award upon Shaw, which led to a genuinely emotional standing ovation from the crowd. You can check out MTV's video of the amazing moment, below! James Shaw Jr. has become widely regarded as a hero by many different people and news outlets since the tragedy that unfolded in April. The shooting at the Nashville, Tennessee Waffle House left four people dead (and several others injured), but it's reasonable to assume that the death toll could've been higher if Shaw had not stepped in to do something. The real-life hero incurred a gunshot wound of his own when he attacked the shooter, and he suffered a burn on his hand when he grabbed the barrel of the gun used in the attack. The Best Hero award wasn't the only honor that Black Panther walked away with during the MTV Movie & TV Awards. In addition to that awesome moment, the most recent MCU solo movie also walked away with the Best Movie award, while Chadwick Boseman also picked up the Best Actor in a Movie award as well. Additionally, Michael B. Jordan also picked up the Best Villain award for his portrayal of Erik Killmonger, so there was no shortage of praise and accolades to go around in the Black Panther world. If you want to catch Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa on the big screen, then make sure to head over to your local theater to see Avengers: Infinity War while you still can, and you can see the MCU's next adventure when Ant-Man and The Wasp debuts on July 6! Beyond that, you can also take a glance at CinemaBlend's 2018 movie premiere guide to see what other films are coming this year! As always, we will bring you more updates related to all of your favorite Marvel characters as they become available to us!
  9. Among the many superlatives that can be attributed to it, Avengers: Infinity War was a massive ensemble film like no other, bringing together (almost) all the actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for one giant event. Given the lengthy cast list and the character-filled frames of the film, you would think that shooting the movie was a fun and busy communal experience among the many co-stars. However, while it might have been that way for some actors on Infinity War, for Carrie Coon, it was quite different. The actress, who played Black Order member Proxima Midnight, found filming Infinity War to be a lonely experience, as she explained: The Avengers franchise is so enormous, it's actually much lonelier, because you're never acting with the actors in the room. Robert Downey Jr.'s come in six weeks ago and done this scene and now you're coming in and putting yourself into it and he's not there. It is interesting to think that such a jam-packed movie could be a lonely shooting experience for anyone but I think that what Carrie Coon told Entertainment Weekly speaks to the nature of modern filmmaking, especially on a blockbuster. With so many moving parts and so many busy, in-demand actors, sometimes it's not logistically feasible to have everybody in the same place at the same time. Thanks to movie magic, it's not always even necessary. Carrie Coon only shot her motion-capture scenes for six hours in Atlanta before flying to San Francisco to get her face scanned at ILM. That was it. That was the extent of her experience shooting Infinity War. So you can see how that could be a lonely, somewhat impersonal experience, just breezing in and not getting to act opposite anyone. Because she played a motion-capture character, Carrie Coon's experience was probably not representative of all of her co-stars. For the actors that appeared onscreen in their human forms and weren't motion-capture, there was undoubtedly more actual interaction on set, equaling what was hopefully a less lonely experience. But Proxima Midnight was created with CGI in post, so ultimately it wasn't necessary for Carrie Coon to film with the actors she would be sharing screentime with. We've often heard how awkward and weird it can be to film these CGI-heavy blockbusters where an actor is required to act with nothing in front of them except maybe a ball on a stick, but the loneliness aspect is something you don't hear about as much. It definitely makes sense and is just one of the many challenges that come with shooting these types of films where there is less and less tethering an actor to the tangibility of the real world. Whatever loneliness she felt, it didn't effect Carrie Coon's performance, as Proxima Midnight was one of the more menacing members of the Black Order, even if she ultimately didn't have much screen time. You can next catch Carrie Coon, sans CGI, opposite Mackenzie Davis in the indie flick Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town, in theaters on June 22nd. She will also be appearing later this summer in season 2 of the USA show The Sinner. To see all of the biggest movies hitting theaters this year, check out our release schedule.
  10. We have seen a fair number of sequels (good as well as bad) come and go in 2018, with films like Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 capitalizing on rabid fanbases. Now it looks like we have another Josh Brolin-fronted sequel to look forward to, as Sicario: Day of the Soldado has finally screened for audiences, and reactions towards the follow-up to Denis Villeneuve's Sicario are largely positive at this point. In fact, CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg recently saw the film, and he noted that the film managed to rise above a few issues and satisfy in a significant way. In his response, Eric wrote: So, it looks like the switch away from Emily Blunt's Kate Macer (who could be set up to return in Sicario 3) has paid off for Sicario: Day of the Soldado. Eric's take on the movie is that, while there are some issues that bog it down, Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro deliver all of the gritty and violent awesomeness that we were hoping to see. Eric is not alone in his take on Sicario: Day of the Soldado. In fact, Uproxx writer Mike Ryan similarly took to Twitter after his screening of the film to note that the sequel is surprising in terms of how good it is when compared to the film that preceded it. Mike wrote: Praise for Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro seems to be popping up all over the web, as IndieWire's Anne Thompson also addressed the strength of their chemistry and the depth of their roles in her praise of Day of the Soldado. On social media, Anne wrote: That said, there's praise to be thrown around for far more than just the film's two lead actors. In fact, Collider's Steven Weintraub also addressed the screenplay by Taylor Sheridan (who is on fire with recent critical hits like Hell or High Water and Wind River) as one of the most substantial elements of the movie. Steven wrote: Finally, we come to Collider's Jeff Sneider. In his reaction to the film, he noted that it's not quite as good as the original, but it's still a worthy successor, and a truly visceral and "fucked up" viewing experience. Jeff wrote: So those are the early reactions to Sicario: Day of the Soldado, but we will bring you more information related to the film as it becomes available to us. Day of the Soldado will debut in theaters on June 29, so make sure to check it out when it finally premieres!
  11. With the idea of advancing beyond the idea of the "comic book movie," the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been very careful when it comes to offering different genres with their different superhero properties. For example, Guardians of the Galaxy is a space opera; Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a political thriller; and Ant-Man was crafted as a heist narrative. So what can we expect from the upcoming Ant-Man and The Wasp? According to director Peyton Reed, you should be thinking about Martin Scorsese's After Hours and Martin Brest's Midnight Run: When we first started talking about what Ant-Man and the Wasp would look and feel like, and the kind of movie we wanted to make, I definitely started talking about things like After Hours and Midnight Run, and these things where there's a lot of forward momentum. There's almost a road movie quality to the movie in that way. The first movie, because it was an origin story, a lot of it took place in Hank Pym's house. I just wanted to open the movie up and get out and take advantage of San Francisco, because that felt like a different texture for the MCU. Every director takes particular cinematic influences with them into shooting a movie, and on the set of Ant-Man and The Wasp Peyton Reed revealed two fantastic titles that were on his mind during the production of his second Marvel feature. I visited the Atlanta, Georgia set last year along with a small group of other journalists, given permission to watch filming and interview the actors/filmmakers, and it was early in our interview with Reed that he revealed the inspiration provided by After Hours and Midnight Run. It should be noted that After Hours and Midnight Run are pretty different movies -- the former chronicling a crazy, weird night in the life of an ordinary guy; and the latter following a straight-laced bounty hunter on a mission to deliver a talkative target -- but one thing that the two titles have in common is consistent pressure and motivation that is ever driving the characters forward. As described by Peyton Reed, for Ant-Man and The Wasp what's serving that purpose is the titular heroes trying to find a way to rescue The Wasp's mom, Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne. Said Reed, The urgency was really about trying to graft this idea of a search and rescue movie onto this ticking clock, and for whatever scientific reasons, if they were going to go, perhaps, look for Janet van Dyne, how do you go about doing that? And it's an impossible thing, scientifically, but also if there's urgency and there's maybe a window of time they have to do it, it's about collecting the people, the things, everything they need to do that. Being a bit fan of both After Hours and Midnight Run, this was incredibly exciting to hear, but Peyton Reed also offered up another key outside influence that fans may be able to pick up on. Evidently along with the ticking clock mission to save Janet van Dyne there were also be a nice sprawling mystery filled with all kinds of important characters/roadblocks -- similar to those found in the works of author Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty,Out of Sight, Rum Punch, et. al.). Reed explained, The first was more of a heist movie, and this wanted to be a little more of an Elmore Leonard vibe, where we have villains, but we also have antagonists, and we have these roadblocks to our heroes getting to where they need to be, and getting what they need for this mission. It felt like this sort of more chaotic comedy and action in the movie felt like a good next step for Ant-Man and the Wasp. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: the only way that comic book movies stay popular is if they are consistently offering up something fresh and new for fans, and it definitely sounds like Ant-Man and The Wasp is being cooked up as something original and a whole lot of fun. We'll have plenty more set visit coverage coming your way soon, so stay tuned here on CinemaBlend, and look for Ant-Man and The Wasp in theaters on July 6th.
  12. The last time we saw Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne, she was over the moon. After all, her father, Michael Douglas' Dr. Hank Pym, had finally accepted her future as a costumed hero, and revealed a new prototype suit for her to wear. It makes for one of the best end credits scenes in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe... but it has a funny real world ending. As it turns out, Lilly's first time actually getting to wear the suit for her titular role in Ant-Man and The Wasp didn't exactly go perfectly, as she explained during an on-set interview: The first time I put on the suit it didn't fit. [laughs] So it was very anticlimactic. It was like, 'This is gonna be... ugggh. This doesn't work. Why is my bum flat? I have a really good bum, guys! Come on. Work with me here.' Evangeline Lilly shared this funny story when I was on set last year while Ant-Man and The Wasp was still filming down in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of a roundtable interview with a small group of other journalists, the actress was asked about her first time wearing the Wasp costume, and she shared that it wasn't the most memorable experience in the world. It turns out that it's pretty hard to nail a superhero get-up on the first try, and so it had to go back to the artisans and be reworked after the initial fitting. They didn't exactly nail it on the second time either, however. The truth is that it took months of hard work to get the whole thing right, and the production even brought on a special seamstress to accentuate a certain aspect of the Wasp costume that Evangeline Lilly felt was important. Said the actress, It was four months of in and out of suits, and fitting, and tweaking, and tapering at the right spots, and letting out at the right spots, and making everything fit like a glove to my body - which is very, very difficult. And our costume team are wildly talented people. We brought on this one particular seamstress, April [McCoy], who has worked with dancers before, and just has an uncanny sense of a woman's body, and what clothes need to do on that body to make it sing. She has miraculously made my legs look longer than they really are, which was one of my first requests [laughs]. It was clearly a lot of work for all involved, but as you can tell looking at the finished result in the Ant-Man and The Wasp trailers and various stills it was all worth it. When it was finally perfected, Evangeline Lilly absolutely loved the finished result, and told us that she tried to spend as much time in the suit as she possibly could. Said Lilly, Once it was perfect, once the suit came to a place where I put it on and you could feel everyone in the room went, 'Oh, there she is,' that was fuckin' cool. [laughs] Then it was like they couldn't get it off of me. I was like, 'No, just let me wear it a little longer.' And I'm dancing around the room. I should've been fighting around the room, but I'm not actually the Wasp; I'm Evangeline Lilly. Hi, I dance. We've only seen previews of what the Wasp costume can do, but it won't be long until we see the thing fully function on the big screen. Ant-Man and The Wasp, will be here in just a few short weeks, so get excited, and stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for more from my time on set!
  13. Gotti, a new film which stars John Travolta as the titular mobster, isn't doing very well with critics. However, rather than take it lying down, the movie is firing back at the critics. A new ad for the film that has gone online is pointing out that audiences have had a much more positive reaction to Gotti than the critics have, and it asks moviegoers to see the film and judge for themselves, rather than trust people the ad calls trolls. Check it out. The language is a bit harsh, but it certainly fits when you're talking about a movie about one of the most notorious mobsters who ever lived. Gotti stars John Travolta as the "Teflon Don" John Gotti, who ran the Gambino Crime Family in New York City in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It's certainly a story that seems fit for a great movie. However, thus far critics haven't agreed this is one, as every review currently posted to the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes is negative. However, the ad is correct that audiences have been more receptive to the film, as the audience score on the same site is 76% positive. It's not uncommon for audiences and critics to have diverging views about a film, and certainly, no movie likes to see bad reviews. However, this situation has been taken one step further as Gotti is calling out critics and referring to those who have given the movie a bad review as trolls. Clearly, the movie is afraid that the negative reviews will hamper its ability to make money, and the feeling is that calling out the critics will do more good than doing what most movies do, which is ignore them. Of course, it should be pointed out that, while the fact that 100% of the reviews are bad certainly isn't something to be excited about, Gotti currently only has 25 reviews listed on the site. Nearly every other movie that was released on Friday has four times that many, so the simple fact is that most critics haven't even seen the film, and the ad is picking a fight with a fairly small number of critics. Of course, people absolutely should judge for themselves whether or not the movie is any good. While many filmmakers have taken issue with sites like Rotten Tomatoes and believe it has a negative impact on the industry, it's hard to say that a lot of people actually avoid certain films based on the response of critics as a whole or any individual reviews. Art is subjective and every person is going to react to it differently. Reviews can be valuable to some as it can give viewers a snapshot of a film that might help them decide if it's the sort of thing they might like. Reviews can also help viewers consider specific aspects of a movie in ways they might otherwise not, but they're not actually objective measures of a film's quality, just a subjective view of each individual person. If they were, critics, and most everybody else, would always agree on whether or not a movie is good, and they don't. See Gotti for yourself in theaters now.
  14. Artist Jay Oliva has confirmed that Zack Snyder had a complete cut of Justice League. It would be quite the understatement to say that production on the Warner Bros. superhero ensemble tentpole was tumultuous. While it was plagued by several issues, arguably its biggest controversy was the director switch after original helmsman Zack Snyder stepped down from directing duties due to a personal tragedy, resulting in former Marvel Studios director Joss Whedon stepping in and overseeing the reshoots. Calls for the release of the Snyder Cut began immediately after the film rolled out in theaters last November. For a while, it was a cause that united all DC fans, considering how significantly different the final cut was from the earlier trailers for the film. Unfortunately, the campaign wasn't without its fair share of drama, especially after fans of Snyder denounced the original creator of the campaign last month. Now, after months of deliberation whether or not the Snyder Cut really exist, a Justice League artist confirms that Snyder completed a cut of the movie before his high-profile exit. RELATED: The Justice League Steals the Snyder Cut In This Fan Art Taking it to his official Twitter account, Oliva shared some insight on the mysterious Synder Cut, finally confirming that it does exist as "Zack isn’t the kind of director who creates the film in the edit bay. It’s all planned out meticulously from beginning to end. That’s how MoS and BvS was done." He then continued, saying: "what I meant with 99% is that all of the scenes Zack envisioned was shot and exists in one form or another. Of course there are still vfx that is unfinished but I never inferred that the film was 99% done. Rather that Zack’s vision was all shot except for a few reshoots planned." Considering the confusion as to what the mysterious footage really consists of stemming from some fans' back-and-forth with Mark Hughes - who is insisting that the Snyder Cut doesn't exist - Oliva said that fans "are responding to people saying that the Snydercut (prior to Whedon’s involvement) does not exist and is not a cohesive story because Zack left. It may not be 100% polished but all of the planned scenes were shot and edited into a full timeline." To be fair, Snyder's followers seem to have an inkling that there wasn't a complete Snyder Cut. But considering that the filmmaker finished Justice League's principal photography, there's a good chance that the movie he intended to make was almost done despite the lack of VFX or additional photography, as Oliva mentioned. More than a finished film, fans are more interested in how the director would've progressed the characters he introduced to the DCEU, particularly Superman - whose scenes were mostly reshot, as indicated by Henry Cavill's odd upper lip (the result of his mustache being removed via CGI). Snyder continuously dropping bits and pieces of information regarding his canceled five-film DCEU blueprint over the last few months only intensified people's desire to see his original cut of Justice League - especially since it seems to have included pivotal story details connected to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, as well as setting up the narrative for Justice League Part 2. Unfortunately, with Warner Bros. and DCEU looking to veer away from Snyder's work, only time will tell if the so-called Snyder Cut will ever be released to the public.
  15. Director Terry Gilliam has encountered more trouble with his years-long passion project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, as news broke today that the filmmaker has lost his rights to the film. Despite all of the time that Gilliam has poured into the film’s production, the director lost a court battle that determined who had proper rights to The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. The Paris Court of Appeal ruled that the film’s former producer Paulo Branco has the rights to the project after reviewing a 2016 contract that confirmed Branco’s enduring ties to the film. It was Branco that originally began the suit, taking Gilliam to court over the film’s rights after claiming the filmmaker made the movie illegally. Related: Man Who Killed Don Quixote Finally Gets a Trailer Following the Paris Court’s ruling, Branco expressed gratitude over the decision and shock over the fact that the film was made by parties who did not own its rights. He has the following to say on the matter during an interview with Screen Daily: “The film belongs in its entirety to [the production company Alfama Films]. The film was made illegally. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen so many people embark on a mission to produce and exploit a film, without holding the rights. It’s a unique case.” The Paris Court of Appeal’s ruling also ordered Gilliam to pay €10,000 ($11,600) to Alfama Films. Branco stressed that his company Alfama will be seeking similar damages from everyone involved with the film’s production, including “the film’s producers, Kinology, all the others who supported the film, including those who distributed the film in France and the Cannes Film Festival, everyone.” Man Who Killed Don Quixote is an adaptation of Cervantes’ famous work Don Quixote and stars Jonathan Pryce and Adam Driver. The film has long suffered a tumultuous production. Gilliam originally began plans for the film back in 1998 and had Johnny Depp attached to star. But plans fell apart, and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote continued to meet challenges that halted production, ranging from health issues to natural disasters. Gilliam attempted to make the film on eight different occasions over nearly two decades. The filmmaker finally managed to get the project moving in 2015 after Amazon agreed to fund and release the film. Man Who Killed Don Quixote began filming in 2017 and wrapped shooting last summer. Gilliam finished a rough cut in November of 2017 and described his film as “surprisingly wonderful.” The Man Who Killed Don Quixote finally premiered in May at this year's Cannes Film Festival to great anticipation, but it ended up receiving mixed reviews following its screening. Even still, many believed that the story of Gilliam’s infamous project that had finally come to fruition had found its conclusion with the Cannes premiere. However, Branco has made it clear that this is not the case. With his impassioned statements after the court hearing, it appears as though Branco will be leaving no stone unturned in his quest for justice over the film’s production. One thing is for certain: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’s long and troubled journey is not over just yet.
  16. Unlike the live-action Transformers movies before it, Bumblebee will only feature three Decepticons. This is in keeping with previous reports, which have described the spinoff as a lower-budgeted and "smaller" Transformers film. Bumblebee will further serve to scale things down on the franchise after last year's Transformers: The Last Knight. That movie was typically criticized for being bombastic and over-stuffed with Transformers, even by many die-hard fans of the property. Those behind the franchise are now mixing things up, following that film's disappointing box office performance. In addition to the smaller price tag, Bumblebee will feature a female human lead - a first for the series. The film takes place in 1987 and follows the titular Autobot on a mission to earth, where he crosses paths with a young mechanic named Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld). Bumblebee is carrying out his mission alone, in order to maintain a low profile and avoid drawing excess attention to himself. For that reason, "B" will have fewer Decepticons on his tail and tracking his movements in the movie. Related: Bumblebee's Female Lead Was Steve Spielberg's Idea Bumblebee was written by Christina Hodson (the first woman to write a Transformers movie) and serves primarily as a coming of age story for Charlie. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura praised Hodson's screenplay during his interview with EW to promote the film. He also said the movie's creatives realized they would need to reduce the number of Decepticons in the film, to avoid over-shadowing Charlie's storyline: “[Christina Hodson] wrote a really beautiful script that really played into the emotion of the relationship of the two. So looking at the movie from that perspective, we thought, we don’t want to overwhelm one Autobot with too many Decepticons. So he has three primary antagonists.” EW has further revealed that two of the Decepticons will hide themselves as automobiles in the Bumblebee movie. However, for the time being, all three of their identities are being kept under-wraps. That includes the Deception that has already been partially revealed by the Bumblebee teaser trailer released this month. As the trailer shows, that transforming robot takes on the form of a jet when in-diguise. All thing considered, having fewer Decepticons sounds like a smart move for Bumblebee. The previous live-action Transformers films usually didn't spend much time developing the villains outside of Megatron. Even The Last Knight's Suicide Squad-style montage intro to the Decepticons didn't do much to distinguish them from one another. With fewer robots-in-disguise fighting for screen time, Bumblebee may yet have more success in its efforts to make the Autobots' enemies memorable in live-action.
  17. Call of Duty is going to be a "real movie," and it's coming sooner than later. Stefano Sollima directed this month's highly-anticipated movie, Sicario 2, for which he's already receiving some positive early buzz. Of course, he's also busy prepping two new TV shows, but those aren't the only projects he has lined up. In November 2015, it was revealed that Activision Blizzard Studios would develop a robust cinematic universe based on Call of Duty, a first-person shooter game that has become an iconic franchise since it began in 2003. The game debuted on PC and soon spread to several consoles and handhelds. It has produced several successful installments, including multiple spinoff games. One of the most popular spinoffs, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, was recently made available for free for PS Plus members. And now, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is set to release later this year, but there's so much more on the horizon for the franchise, including a movie. RELATED: CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 4 IS BRINGING BACK NUKETOWN MAP FOR FREE In an interview with Screen Rant for Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Stefano Sollima briefly discussed his Call of Duty movie and seemed to be throwing some shade at the video game movie genre when asked what he has in store. "I can't tell you but for sure, it's going to be a real movie." Of course, one can understand his somewhat shady response. Although some films like Rampage and Tomb Raider have received a small amount of acclaim, the majority of video game films, such as Tekken and Bloodrayne 2: Deliverance, have become subjects of cinematic mockery. Sollima hopes to take away the stigmata produced by all these disastrous video game movies. People have held their hopes high ever since it was announced that Sollima was in negotiations to direct the Call of Duty film in February. Perhaps Sollima will distinguish himself from other directors who don't realize that not only do video games not have compelling stories, but audiences don't take the stories seriously in the first place. Perhaps a video game movie should concentrate on being fun, like the video game itself. Sollima certainly realizes this, but of course, a great deal of the movie hinges on its story (and there are so many eras to explore). Plus, Call of Duty is a property that can get away with not being considered a video game movie but rather a war movie. With Sollima's direction, it's quite possible that the Call of Duty film will become one of the more successful video game movies.
  18. Samuel L. Jackson believes he's figured out the ending to Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers 4. Jackson made his first appearance as Nick Fury in 2008's Iron Man and then reprised his role in multiple films before seemingly dying in the post-credits to Avengers: Infinity War. The cliffhanger ending for the film was the most shocking events in the MCU to date. Although the scene wasn't exactly like the one in the comics, Thanos the Mad Titan did snap his fingers, thus wiping out half of all life in the universe. While Marvel insists characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange are really dead, the reality is that they are more than likely coming back; several of the heroes have sequels in the works, but it has been hinted that those sequels could be prequels to Avengers 3. So, rather than a matter of if they'll return, it's more a question of who will return and how. Related: Captain Marvel: Krypton's Pinar Toprak to Become First Female MCU Composer In an interview with Vulture, Samuel L. Jackson - who's reprising the role of Nick Fury in next year's Captain Marvel - revealed he thinks he's figured it out. As he explained: "Who’s really dead, and who’s really in the flaky wind of Marvel dust, I don’t know, but I do know there’s a solution that they didn’t even have to tell me, just because I know who Captain Marvel is and what all that means." Both Ant-Man & the Wasp and Captain Marvel are set before the events of Infinity War; in fact, Captain Marvel is set in the early '90s. And while that's the case, both films are expected to link into next year's Avengers 4, introducing concepts and characters who will prove crucial to saving the universe. According to Jackson, a little knowledge of the MCU's Captain Marvel is all you need to work out "a solution" to Thanos' snap. Right now, audiences don't actually know all that much about the MCU's Captain Marvel. The movie will be an origin story, one that sees the titular hero caught up in the Kree-Skrull War. Her powerset appears to have been adjusted beyond even that of Carol's Binary form in the comics. Back in 2016, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige suggested that Captain Marvel would be the most powerful hero in the MCU to date. "Her powers are off the charts, and when she's introduced, she will be by far the strongest character we've ever had." Brie Larson later agreed, saying, "She's so strong. She can move planets! So, to me, it's like how far can I go with this strength?" It's clear that the MCU has altered Captain Marvel's backstory and powerset in some as-yet-unknown way. It's believed that she's somehow tied to the Quantum Realm, the mysterious plane of existence that's set to be explored in Ant-Man & the Wasp. It's possible the Quantum Realm could actually be used to travel in time; in which case, that would potentially explain why Jackson thinks he's worked it out.
  19. It seems Warner Bros live-action take on classic anime Akira is slowly coming together, with the news art director David Scott has joined the design team. The Akira anime was written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, based on the manga he created. Both the anime and manga take place in Neo-Toyko in the dystopian future of 2019, where the leader of teen bike gang has to rescue his friend from the military after he starts to display psychic powers - and everything does south from there. The movie was a groundbreaking piece of work and helped break anime through to Western audiences. It combined stunning visuals, political commentary, a fleshed out futuristic world and great action. Warner Bros has been trying to make a live-action version for over 15 years, which has gone through filmmakers like George Miller and Jordan Peele, and actors like Kristen Stewart, Gary Oldman, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Despite this, all previous attempts eventually collapsed during pre-production due to script and budget concerns. Related: Taika Waititi's Live-Action Akira Movie Still In Development Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi is the latest filmmaker to land the project, though his commitment isn't 100 percent confirmed. That said, there are encouraging signs the movie is finally coming together. Production designer Martin Whist joined the project at the beginning of the year, and now Omega Underground reports that both art director David Scott (Avengers: Infinity War) and special effects supervisor Joel Whist have just joined Akira's design team. Again, Warner Bros. has yet to confirm Akira is moving forward, but as the outlet points out, it would be very odd for pre-vis work to get underway on the project if a director wasn't attached to oversee it. Waititi is currently working on dark comedy Jojo Rabbit, so maybe once he wraps production on that he'll jump straight into Akira. A number of live-action movies based on anime have been met with accusations of white-washing in recent years, including Death Note and Ghost In The Shell. The controversy surrounding the latter movie is said to have contributed to the movie's underwhelming box-office. So, if the Akira movie is finally going ahead, producers will likely be wary of causing offense. Waitiki has already commented that if he was casting the movie he would cast Asian teenagers in the lead roles. The director has also said many times he would go back to the manga, instead of adapting the anime. The anime had to chop out big chunks of the story, while the Akira manga tells a much bigger story. It's possible that fans may find out more about the project around Comic-Con International next month.
  20. According to Tom Kane, Lucasfilm has 9 Star Wars movies currently in development. Kane is a prominent voice actor in the Star Wars universe, having voiced Yoda in The Clone Wars and Admiral Ackbar in The Last Jedi as well as many other characters over the years. We've already been teased with the announcements of Rian Johnson's new trilogy as well as D.B. Weiss and David Benioff's project as well, which are reportedly included in the 9 movies that Kane has mentioned. Star Wars 9 is gearing up to begin filming next month, but what are the remaining movies that Lucasfilm is planning? One of the Star Wars movies that is not being considered by Lucasfilm is a Yoda movie, according to a new tweet from All Star Comic Con who reportedly spoke with Tom Kane about the future of Star Wars. An Obi-Wan Kenobi movie as well as a Boba Fett movie are currently in development, but the rest is a mystery at this time. There were reports that a second Solo movie was being planned along with a possible Lando movie, but those thoughts may have been put on hold after Solo tanked at the box office. If Tom Kane's words are to be believed, Rian Johnson's trilogy could account for 3 films as well as D.B. Weiss and David Benioff's project, which could also account for 3 more films, bringing the total to 6. Add in the Obie-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett movies and suddenly 9 doesn't seem like such a big number. However, Kane could be referring to 9 separate Star Wars projects. If that's the case, there's a lot more going on behind-the-scenes than anybody realizes. 9 Star Wars films does sound like quite a bit, but nothing has been confirmed by Lucasfilm at this time. The Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi movies haven't even officially been confirmed by Lucasfilm, so it will be interesting to see what ends up getting produced down the line. Lucasfilm may be revising their schedule after Solo took a nose dive at the box office. Release dates will have to be more closely considered before anything starts to move forward to avoid the Star Wars fatigue, which may have already set in for some moderate fans. 9 Star Wars movies does sound exciting for hardcore fans and leaves the playing field wide open. Disney and Lucasfilm will spend the next handful of years fully exploring the Star Wars universe and it's exciting to think about where the franchise will go, but many are already skeptical of what's to come. We know that Rian Johnson is going to explore a part of the story that won't include the Skywalker saga, so there's many ways that these 9 movies can go. And as previously mentioned, it's not guaranteed that all of the films will get made.
  21. Disney Pixar's Incredibles 2 opened much bigger than expectations with a massive $180 million, which easily broke the record for the highest debut for an animated film, set in 2016 by Finding Dory with $135 million. Most expected Incredibles 2 to break this record after it doubled Finding Dory's then-record Thursday tally of $9.2 million with $18.5 million, but now it's official. While it may only have one weekend at the top, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hitting theaters next weekend, it will likely have no trouble surpassing its predecessor, 2004's Incredibles. Incredibles started its box office run in 2004 with an impressive opening of $70.4 million, en route to $261.4 million domestic and $633 million worldwide, from a relatively modest $92 million budget. While no budget figures were given for Incredibles 2 yet, it earned $55 million in international markets for a worldwide tally of $231.5 milion. Many box office analysts were predicting an opening weekend within the $130 million to $140 million range, but even in going up against two newcomers, Warner Bros.' R-rated comedy Tag and Sony's gritty remake of Superfly, Incredibles 2 had no trouble taking the top spot. Incredibles 2 opened in 4,410 theaters, the fourth widest opening of all time behind The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (4,468 theaters), Avengers: Infinity War (4,474 theaters) and Despicable Me 3 (4,529 theaters). Incredibles 2 earned an incredible $40,816 per-screen average over the weekend, and it was a big hit with critics as well, earning a 94% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While we'll have to wait and see how Incredibles 2 fares throughout the rest of its run, it will easily surpass its predecessor, and then some. Newcomer Tag debuted in third place with $14.6 million, behind last week's winner Ocean's 8, which slipped to second place with $19.5 million. Tag debuted in 3,382 theaters this weekend, earning a decent $4,317 per-screen average. The opening weekend represents half of hte $28 million budget, so even though the opening wasn't huge, it should still manager to pull in a decent profit. The top 5 is rounded out by Solo: A Star Wars Story with $9 million and Deadpool 2 with $8.8 million. The top 10 is rounded out by Hereditary ($7 million), Superfly ($6.3 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($5.2 million), Adrift ($2.1 million) and Book Club ($1.8 million). Also opening in theaters this weekend was Gotti, which debuted in 503 theaters but fell quite short of the top 10, opening in 12th place with $1.6 million for a $3,320 per-screen average. The movie made headlines last week when it opened to a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score. Take a look at the top 10 below, courtesy of Box Office Mojo, and be sure to check back on Tuesday for next weekend's box office predictions. Incredibles 2 $180 million Ocean's 8 $19.5 million Tag $14.6 million Solo: A Star Wars Story $9 million Deadpool 2 $8.8 million Hereditary $7 million Superfly $6.3 million Avengers: Infinity War $5.2 million Adrift $2.1 million Book Club $1.8 million
  22. Earlier this week, Infinity War star Chris Pratt joked that Tom Holland spoiled Jurassic World 2 for him before he was able to read the script. Holland is friends with Jurassic World 2 director J.A. Bayona from working on a previous movie and the director reportedly let the Spider-Man actor in on some of the plot for the upcoming sequel before filming began, which he relayed to Pratt. Chris Pratt then told the world, which saw Bayona poking some fun at Holland on social media and then resulted in the dead Spider-Man joke. In reference to Chris Pratt revealing that Tom Holland had spoiled Jurassic World 2, J.A. Bayona took to Twitter to jokingly call Holland a "weasel" for letting secrets out. Holland responded by saying that he got excited and revealed that Marvel won't tell him anything anymore because of his reputation. Bayona the said, "Don't worry, man. I'm not telling anyone anything about Spider-Man 2..." After the events of Infinity War, the return of Peter Parker is going to be hard to explain, which Holland knows. Tom Holland had this to say in response. "What do you mean Spider-Man 2? Didn't you see Avengers?" Tom Holland is obviously joking around, but the death of Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War was a big deal, which is why he included the hashtag, "I don't wanna go." Peter Parker getting sick and turning to dust in Tony Stark's arms was one of the most emotional scenes in Marvel Cinematic Universe history and fans are still pretty sad about it. However, we know that Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is on the way, so Holland will be returning to the role in some form or fashion. The upcoming Avengers 4 will reveal how Peter Parker comes back, but it's a mystery for the time being. There have been rumors of different time lines as well as time travel, so we'll just have to wait and see how Spidey comes back from the dust pan. Or, we could just wait for Tom Holland to spoil it for everybody, which could very well happen any day now. However, the Russo Brothers more than likely already thought of this and fed Holland a fake script or two, so he might not even really know. Regardless, it's just fun to see Chris Pratt, J.A. Bayona, and Tom Holland have some fun with each other in such a public form. Now that Holland has gotten so much grief for his reputation as a spoiler, he might be stepping up to be more aware of what he's saying to people while filming and reshoots are occurring for Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Avengers 4. As Pratt said in a recent interview, Holland is starting to grow up, so some spoilers might be hard to come by this time around. You can check out the hilarious social media exchange below, thanks to J.A. Bayona's Twitter account.
  23. The lead up to the eventual release of Infinity War was an intense one for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and especially for fans of Hawkeye. Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton was not present in any of the promotional material for the epic team up movie and it really started to stress some hardcore Hawkeye fans out in a major way, which led to some pretty funny memes as well as some fan art. However, one of the best pieces to come out of that turbulent time was a reimagined Infinity War poster with only Thanos and Hawkeye replacing every other character on the original, which a movie theater mistakenly used to promote the movie. A Reddit user took a picture of a movie theater in Antwerp, Belgium that was using the all Hawkeye poster for Infinity War. Sure enough, it's right there and it's pretty hilarious to see all of the Hawkeyes, especially since he's not even featured in the movie, save for one mention. While some of the comments on the image in Reddit laughed at the mistake, others revealed that their local theaters actually made the same mistake, which goes to tell you just how awesome this fan-made Infinity War poster really is. How the movie theater got their hands on this fan-made Infinity War poster is unknown, but as previously noted, they're not the first to use it. It's entirely possible that a clever theater worker put the poster up on purpose as a joke, but it really seems that it was an honest mistake in all of the cases of the all Hawkeye poster being used, which is even weirder. How did this all Hawkeye poster end up on display in a Belgian movie theater? And who is behind the awesome Hawkeye only Infinity War poster? The artist is of course the extremely talented BossLogic who makes all kinds of exceptional alternate artwork for fans. When there's a rumor that an actor is going to portray a certain character, nine times out of ten, BossLogic whips something up really quickly that imagines that actor as the character. For instance, it's rumored that Joaquin Phoenix is going to play the Joker, so BossLogic is the one behind that epic piece of artwork that nearly every story uses when writing about that project. While Hawkeye was not featured at all in Infinity War, he will have a large part in the upcoming Avengers 4 along with Ant-Man, who was also left out of the previous movie. Although Paul Rudd's Ant-Man was not featured in any of the promotional artwork for Infinity War either, MCU fans weren't as vocal as they were about the absence of Hawkeye, which is more than likely because he is one of the original six Avengers. Either that or MCU fans don't really like Ant-Mann all that much. You can check out the all Hawkeye poster on display at the Belgian movie theater at Reddit.
  24. Benicio Del Toro would like to see the Collector and Grandmaster team up within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When we last saw Del Toro's Collector in Infinity War, his fate was left unclear. When part of the Guardians of the Galaxy went to Knowhere, Thanos used the Reality Stone to lure them into a trap. The Collector disintegrated when reality set in, but we're not sure what happened to him exactly. However, Benicio Del Toro has pretty much confirmed that the Collector survived while admitting that it would be an honor to work with his MCU brother Jeff Goldblum, who plays the Grandmaster. Earlier this week, Jeff Goldblum revealed that the Grandmaster survived the events of Infinity War. We last saw the character at the conclusion of Thor: Ragnarok, but much like his brother the Collector, it was not clear what happened to him at the end of Infinity War. Now that we know that they both survived, it seems that it's the perfect time to see the brothers finally join forces in the MCU and stir some more mischief into the pot. In a new interview promoting Sicario 2, Benicio Del Toro admitted that he has never met Jeff Goldblum, but that he would be interested in working with his onscreen brother in a future MCU project, when asked about the possibility. While he's never spoken to Goldblum, that doesn't mean that a team up with the immortal brothers is out of the question. The MCU is in a state of confusion at the moment after the events of Infinity War, so maybe the brothers will play a part in Phase 4. Del Toro had this to say about the possibility of a Collector and Grandmaster meeting. "No, I haven't talked to him, but it would be an honor for me to work with him. I've been a fan and you know, it'd be great. It'd be great." While the plot for Avengers 4 is held securely under wraps at the moment, it is possible that we could see the Collector and Grandmaster on the big screen together next year. It's not that far-fetched, but there are already plenty of heroes that set up to be in the highly anticipated movie, so there might not be any room for them. Phase 4 will be kicking off in 2020 with Captain Marvel as the leader, so we could very well see the cosmic immortal Collector and Grandmaster in the near future. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could also be an option to see Jeff Goldblum and Benicio Del Toro on screen together. Another option could be with the Silver Surfer if the Disney and Fox merger ends up going through without any problems. Basically, there's plenty of space for the Collector and Grandmaster to return and share the screen. Let's hope that Marvel Studios can make this happen sooner than later. 25. Fox is currently hard at work putting together their movie adaptation of the play Spamalot. The Tony-award winning play is adapted from the 1975 cult classic Monty Python and The Holy Grail and now it's finally being brought to the big screen. Filming won't be getting underway until next summer, but the studio is already lining up a dream cast that makes this movie sound a lot more appealing than it likely did already. According to a new report, Fox has their eyes on Benedict Cumberbatch, Peter Dinklage and Tiffany Haddish for various roles in the Spamalot movie. The report also comes with character breakdowns for the parts each of the respective stars is being eyed for. Starting with Cumberbatch, the Doctor Strange star is being targeted as King Arthur, who is described as follows. "King of England. He proclaims himself King of all Brittons and amasses a small army of knights. These knights include Lance, Robin, Dennis Galahad, and Bedevere. Arthur sets off on a quest, as instructed by God, to find the Holy Grail." Next up we have the Lady of the Lake, who is possibly going to be played by Girl's Trip breakout Tiffany Haddish. The character is described as "A dazzling and powerful diva. She presents Arthur with Excalibur. Arthur summons her to prove that he's King to Galahad." Last up we have Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, who is being looked at for the part of Patsy, who is described as "Arthur's trusty page. He bangs two halves of coconuts together to make it sound as if Arthur's riding a horse." For those who may not be familiar with Spamalot, which is an irreverent take on the legend of King Arthur, here's a synopsis of the stage play. "Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail. Inspired by the classic comedy film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the musical also diverts a bit from more traditional versions of the legend. Instead, Spamalot features shenanigans including a line of beautiful dancing girls, flatulent Frenchmen, and killer rabbits. Outside, there is plague with a 50% chance of pestilence and famine. Throughout the show, Arthur, traveling with his servant Patsy, recruits several knights to accompany him on his quest, including Sir Bedevere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Galahad. Besides the rabbits and farting Frenchman, they meet such characters as the Lady of the Lake, Prince Herbert, Tim the Enchanter, Not Dead Fred, the Black Knight, and the Knights who say Ni." At the moment these are reportedly just the stars that Fox is hoping to lock down. Whether or not they actually wind up taking part in the adaptation remains to be seen. All three stars are very much in-demand, but that's likely why the studio isn't wasting any time. Monty Python alum Eric Idle is set to pen the screenplay, with Tony winner Casey Nicholaw on board to direct. Spamalot does not currently have a release date.
