  1. The Sonic the Hedgehog movie has responded to negative comments regarding the first official posters released earlier this month. After dazzling Sega owners in the 1990s with speed, a vividly colorful world and some fantastic early platforming action, the blue ring-collecting hedgehog has become a true international video game icon. However, many Sonic fans would perhaps suggest that the franchise hasn't always delivered on its early success, with later games ranging from distinctly average to virtually unplayable. Sonic would go on to appear in various animated forms on TV, also with varying degrees of success. Due to the character's enduring popularity, interest in a Sonic the Hedgehog movie has been constant and such a project was first mentioned as far back as 1994, before ultimately being scrapped. The concept was revived in 2014 and after moving from Sony to Paramount, eventually settled on a 2019 release date. The movie will be directed by Jeff Fowler and star the voice of Ben Schwartz as the eponymous speedster. James Marsden is also set to appear and Jim Carrey is lined up for the role of the evil Dr. Robotnik. Earlier this month, Paramount released the first two posters for Sonic the Hedgehog, one featuring the title character's silhouette and another with Sonic's massive legs on the Golden Gate Bridge. Both designs were roundly panned online, with fans calling the live-action Sonic creepy and overly muscular, among other (mostly unpleasant) things. In response to these criticisms, the official Sonic the Hedgehog movie Twitter has now posted a comeback. The tweet features Sonic, showing off even more jacked legs than before, holding up a sign that reads: "Can't a guy work out? Be back next year. Sonic." This is clearly referencing the many commentators online who felt that the new Sonic movie design looked far too muscular to be the character fans know and love. The tweet comes from an account that is still fairly new and hasn't posted much in the way of original content but the page is verified, and therefore the response appears to be legitimate. Assuming this is the case, it's perhaps reassuring to know that those behind the film (or at least its marketing campaign) are taking the negative responses in good humor, whereas the majority of films tend to simply ignore such online negativity. On a more serious note, the tweet also indicates that Paramount are aware of the backlash and, with nearly a year until release, might still have time to do something about it, should they wish to. Video game movie adaptations have a notoriously bad reputation and the added challenge of a CGI main character means that Sonic the Hedgehog was always a hugely ambitious project. However, it's interesting to compare the Sonic reaction to that of Detective Pikachu, which was overwhelmingly positive. Like the Sonic movie, Detective Pikachu aimed to adapt an iconic video game creature into the world of cinematic live-action but managed to do so in a way that looked natural and pleased fans. Perhaps, if changes are going to be made as a result of the backlash, Sonic the Hedgehog should take some pointers from his Pokemon counterpart.
  2. Penny Marshall, the actress-turned-director-turned-producer, has passed away due to complications from diabetes. In her 75 years, she inspired laughter and tears through her own iconic performances and the many classic films she directed and produced. Marshall started her acting career with a recurring guest role on The Odd Couple, directed by her brother, Garry Marshall. But her big break came when her brother needed a character named Laverne DeFazio for another of his hits, Happy Days. She, along with co-star Cindy Williams, reprised their roles in the incredibly successful spin-off Laverne & Shirley which ran for eight seasons. Marshall’s Laverne, with the signature “L” embroidered on all her clothes, is one of the most iconic TV characters of all time. According to THR, Marshall passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018 in her Hollywood Hills home. In a statement released by her family, they stated, “We hope her life continues to inspire others to spend time with family, work hard and make all of their dreams come true.” After her success in front of the camera, Marshall followed in her brother’s footsteps and began directing. She started out directing television, but soon transitioned to feature films in 1986 with Jumpin’ Jack Flash starring Whoopi Goldberg. Her second feature, Big, starring Tom Hanks, was a massive success and made Marshall the first woman to direct a movie that grossed more than $100 million - though her barrier-breaking has seen a slow progress in Hollywood. Her 1990 film Awakenings was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, though - unsurprisingly, given the Oscar’s track record - she was not nominated for Best Director. Marhsall's biggest hit came in 1992 with A League of Their Own, the star-studded tribute to the Rockford Peaches, the most successful team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The uniquely quotable film (the line “There’s no crying in baseball” is listed as one of the top movie 100 quotes of all time by the American Film Institute) has become an undisputed classic that is still inspiring stories today. From acting to directing, Penny Marshall’s career serves as inspiration to women everywhere. From blue-collar Laverne DeFazio to star-catcher Dottie Hinson, Marshall’s work helped change perceptions and expectations both in front of and behind the camera. Her wry humor and masterful touch will be greatly missed and lovingly appreciated for decades to come.
  3. Venom's big screen version borrowed a lot from his comic book origins, but one thing was missing. Since the film version of the character wasn't born out of a Spider-Man story, as he was in the comics, the giant white spider-logo that usually graces Venom's chest was nowhere to be found. However, while we didn't see the image in the first film, that doesn't necessarily rule out that it won't show up eventually. Venom co-producer Jeff Pinkner reveals in one of the special features of the new Venom Blu-ray, that, the possibility is always there in a sequel. According to Pinkner... Comments have been made, as Jeff Pinkner does here, that Spider-Man does exist in the universe that Venom inhabits, and thus the possibility for the two characters to meet is certainly there. It seems that were that to actually happen, the possibility of classic Venom logo appearing is always there. Of course, interestingly, based on the way Jeff Pinkner phrases his comments, he's not saying that Venom himself/itself could gain the logo, but that a symbiote could end up interacting with Spider-Man at some point and gain it. So we could see the image that comic book fans know on Venom, but on another character. On the one hand, it makes sense. It's only the symbiote's interaction with Spider-Man that results in Venom using the image in the first place, and Venom, in the film version, never has that experience. So we're talking about giving Venom's traditional origin to some other symbiote. At the same time, since Venom is completely malleable, there's nothing stopping Venom from adding the spider to its body in the future. Perhaps Venom and Spider-Man could end up either battling each other or even working together and the experience will be so important to Venom that it adds the spider logo to itself as a sign of respect. It seems like a strange idea to give the Venom logo to another symbiote just for the purposes of getting it in there, but perhaps there's a plan already in place that does make sense. While fans were at least somewhat put off by movie Venom not having the logo, the explanation for why it was done certainly makes sense and I think most fans are probably ok with it at this point. What's next for Venom, including his costume, has not been announced, but based on the way the movie has destroyed the box office, you can bet the sequels are being planned as we speak. Venom is now available on Digital HD and Blu-ray.
  4. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the SEGA Genesis, the iconic publisher has teamed up with Amazon and compiled 25 of some of the console’s best games for an app on Amazon Fire TV. If you own an Amazon Fire Stick or have access to Fire TV in some other way, you can purchase the SEGA Classics app for $14.99 and have instant access to games like Streets of Rage 1 – 3, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, The Revenge of Shinobi, and many more. SEGA has opted to bypass the trend of making a small, plastic replica of their beloved console in favor of a digital bundle. These games can be played with the standard Fire TV remote or with a Bluetooth controller paired via the Fire TV settings menu and if you have extra controllers, 15 of the games are multiplayer. You can view the full list of games below. Alien Storm Altered Beast Beyond Oasis Bio-Hazard Battle Bonanza Bros Columns Comix Zone Decap Attack Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine Dynamite Headdy ESWAT: City Under Siege Gain Ground Golden Axe Golden Axe II Golden Axe III Gunstar Heroes Ristar Sonic CD Sonic Spinball Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Street of Rage Street of Rage II Street of Rage III The Revenge of Shinobi We got to play around with the SEGA Classics app over the last few days and while the UI lacks some fanfare by being a basic white and blue menu with game icons, it’s a pretty solid way to experience some classics. You’ll probably be better off playing them with a Bluetooth controller (we used a Steelseries Status XL) as it’s a more competent way of playing them but the Fire TV remote isn’t a terrible way of playing them either. SEGA Classics is out now for $14.99 in the United States. It’s also available in the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil, Australia, France, Italy, and Spain.
  5. After lying dormant for five years, the post-apocalyptic Russian survival series, Metro, is making a return in early 2019. The third entry in the acclaimed series, Metro Exodus, will see players traveling across a larger world while staying true to its somewhat linear roots to keep the core Metro experience. Yesterday, Metro Exodus went gold meaning the game is “finished”. The main game is complete so they have the story, mechanics, and all that put together and will begin printing it onto discs soon but they’ll spend the next two months polishing it to get rid of bugs and glitches that’ll likely be ironed out in a day one patch. Given it has gone gold so soon, this has allowed publisher Deep Silver to push the game up one whole week. “Our fans have been waiting patiently for Metro Exodus ever since we announced the title at E3 2017,” said Deep Silver CEO Klemens Kundratitz, in the announcement. “We had previously delayed the release date to ensure 4A Games had the time to deliver their ambitious vision for the game, but now we’re delighted to confirm that Metro Exodus has ‘gone gold’ and we are able to bring the release date forward to the 15th February 2019.” You can view the game’s opening title sequence below which was created by the makers of the iconic intros of Game of Thrones and Westworld. Metro Exodus will hit Xbox One, PS4, and PC on February 15th, 2019.
  6. After an acclaimed debut in September and two fairly well-received DLCs, Marvel’s Spider-Man’s tenure is coming to a close next week. The third and final story DLC known as Silver Linings will release on December 21st, 2018 and conclude the ongoing saga between the web-head and Hammerhead’s dispute for control over The City That Never Sleeps. In Silver Linings, players will see the return of Silver Sable as she comes to reclaim the tech Hammerhead stole from her. Spider-Man will make an effort to keep things under control as Yuri Watanabe is on leave following the events of the last DLC and hopefully stop the crime lord once and for all. On top of new story and challenge missions, Silver Linings will add new enemy types and suits for Spider-Man to wear. One of the three new suits is Peter Parker’s suit from the acclaimed new animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. You can view a picture of it and the other two suits in the DLC above. If you pre-order a copy of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on the PlayStation Store starting tomorrow, you’ll get a Silver Linings dynamic theme and some avatar icons for your PS4 profile. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Silver Linings will release on December 21st, 2018 for $9.99 and is the final piece of DLC planned for the game.
  7. Developer Daybreak Games has unveiled the newest entry into their online shooter series with PlanetSide Arena. The sci-fi multiplayer shooter will feature insanely large battles of up to 1000 players and is releasing very soon, on January 29. You can pre-order PlanetSide Arena right now on Steam. Check out the first look at the gameplay! PlanetSide Arena is going to offer three game modes at launch. Massive Clash, Solo and Team Battle Royale. The later marks a first for the series with the introduction of a battle royale mode. Not a surprise, as it’s quickly becoming a standard game mode for new games. It may sound a bit barebones in terms of content but Daybreak is promising to introduce new game modes like Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy and Global Conquest in the future each new season. This is probably one of the bigger points of differentiation to its predecessor. PlanetSide Arena will not be a free-to-play title but instead will feature paid Seasons which contain new game modes and content. No doubt, the bread and butter of PlanetSide games have always been the massive combined-arms battles which really convey the scale of large combats like very few other games. As such, being able to drop into 1000 player matches sound intense. It’s important to note however that at launch only 250 vs. 250 matches will be available. Matches start by choosing between the three classes on offer, Assault, Engineer and Medic. Besides weapons and unique class skills, each player also comes equipped with a jetpack and a vehicle to easier traverse the massive battlefields. Sounds all pretty sweet but not all fans are thrilled. PlanetSide Arena is not a direct sequel to PlanetSide 2 and thus feels like the developer jumping on the battle royale bandwagon instead of staying true to their self.
  8. Avalanche Studios released the fourth entry into their massive open-world action series two weeks ago to middling critical success. The team just released a first big patch for Just Cause 4 which aims to improve a myriad of technical issues players have been experiencing since launch. In a blog post on the Community hub of Just Cause 4 on Steam, developer Avalanche acknowledged the poor technical state of their game many users have been complaining about. The new patch aims to alleviate exactly those numerous issues by addressing game crashes and technical bugs. Here’s what you can expect from the patch: – Numerous stability fixes – Improvements and fixes to menu navigation for mouse and keyboard users – Support for remapping of movement keys – Improved vegetation rendering and asset updates – Fixes to some texture mapping issues – Increased mouse sensitivity range – Corrected specialised vehicle support for mouse and keyboard players – Fixed issue with steering flying vehicles with keyboard – Fixed the disabling SSAO option in Graphics menu, which resulted in broken Ambient Occlusion It’s a good start but technical issues were only one part why we were left disappointed, which you can read in detail in our review. Many games launch with bugs, it’s pretty much the norm these days. Especially large, sandbox titles like Just Cause 4 can present a challenge for developers to ship bug-free. But what users have received with Just Cause 4 is more than the norm it seems, with the game getting hammered on Steam, with huge numbers of negative reviews. Many of which lament the technical state of the game.
  9. A huge Fallout: New Vegas mod seven years in the making. This ambitious Fallout: New Vegas total conversion was, remarkably, seven years in the making. Developed by Rick Hukkanen and Brandan Lee, with the help of dozens of volunteers, the mod is set 20 years after the events of Fallout 2, making it much closer story-wise to the original Interplay series than the Bethesda/Obsidian games. It features new locations, 48 quests, full voice acting, and 13 endings. And best of all, it’s totally free. You can download New California from ModDB, and for most people, installing it is as simple as unzipping the contents into your game directory. Like any good Fallout game, it begins with a narrator lamenting that, yes, war never changes. Over newsreel footage of nuclear bomb tests a man gives a rousing speech, like some jingoistic military commander addressing his troops. But then we see that, in fact, he’s a ‘vault-ball’ coach getting his team ready for a big game. In the mod you play as a resident of Vault 18, which we learn is located high in California’s San Bernardino mountain range, and you just happen to be the Vault 18 Patriots’ star player. You’re a jock, basically, which is different from most vault dweller origin stories. One of the first choices you make is in the middle of a vault-ball match. A player charges at you, and how you deal with him dictates whether your character will be a soldier or scientist. This changes some things in the story ahead and offers two contrasting play styles, providing some replay value. It’s a brilliantly organic way of shaping your character, although you do get to set SPECIAL stats with the familiar Vigor Tester. There are a lot of alternate paths related to stats and speech checks in New California, so it’s worth thinking carefully about how you want to play it.
  10. Game development is hard work, and like many jobs, sometimes you’ve got to cheat a little bit. In a recent Twitter thread, game developers have come forward to share their most embarrassing workarounds, some of which are genuinely hilarious. Prompted by Fullbright co-founder Steve Gaynor, the developers range from current indie designers to grizzled triple-A veterans, all of whom have stories to share about pulling out the duct tape when nothing else seems to work. In some cases, inexperience with coding or engine use forced developers to come up with bizzare solutions to what seem like simple problems, while in others, shipping deadlines meant coming up with something on the fly, quickly. Stuff like this exists all over games: In Fallout 3, for instance, you may have heard that the moving presidential metro car you find in Broken Steel is actually a very large hat for an NPC. And there are plenty of ‘field expedient’ fixes that you never see that cover bugs and memory leaks and auto-save problems. Games are complicated, and unraveling a problem you discover toward the end of development might mean blowing a deadline or breaking a bunch of other stuff you’ve done in the meantime.
