  5. The Swiss streaming platform of Comcast-owned broadcaster Sky is using fan-made subtitles on the final episode of the hit-series Chernobyl. The subtitles are credited to Addic7ed.com, a community that's been branded a 'pirate' site by many major copyright holders. Every day, millions of people enjoy fan-made subtitles. These files help foreigners to better understand English entertainment and provide the hearing impaired with a way to comprehend audio. The subtitles are often used in combination with pirated files. While helpful to many, they are a thorn in the side for major copyright holders, who see them as yet another threat to their business. As a result, fansub communities are increasingly portrayed as illegal operations. Several sites are now blocked by ISPs and site operators have been taken to court following copyright infringement allegations. Given this backdrop, it’s quite unusual to see one of the largest entertainment industry brands using these ‘pirate’ subtitles on its official streaming service. This is exactly what Comcast-owned Sky Switzerland is doing at the moment. Subscribers of the local Sky platform who watch the last episode of the hit series Chernobyl, with English subtitles enabled, see the following message appearing around the five-minute mark. “- Synced and corrected by VitoSilans – www.Addic7ed.com.” The message (screenshot by TF) The message is part of the credits that are typically added to fan-made subtitles. In this case, it clearly indicates that they were sourced from Addic7ed.com, a well-known resource for these type of subtitles and one that is blocked by ISPs in Australia. Looking more closely at the official video and the Addic7ed subtitles, we see that the timing doesn’t match. This suggests that the subtitle has been synced separately to fit the Sky video. However, the opening ‘credits’ were not removed. Also, these subs generally have a closing credit too. These are not visible during the episode on Sky.ch. The Addic7ed team tells us that it doesn’t mind seeing their subs being used by major entertainment conglomerates. It has happened before and as long as it helps people to enjoy a movie or TV-show, everybody benefits. “When we started the project we wished that content would be available to a larger audience by breaking the language barrier or providing English subtitles for hearing impaired people, which would otherwise not enjoy videos as much. If this means that others take our work, so be it,” Addic7ed informs TF. “Professionals or not, our main objective was reached: more people enjoyed the show. Kudos to Sky for keeping the credits.” Sky Switzerland hasn’t responded to our request for comment at the time of publication. Whether the Addic7ed credit was left in intentionally is highly doubtful though. It seems more likely that someone forgot to remove it. In any case, the mention hasn’t gone unnoticed either. At least one person has alerted Sky via Twitter, but the company didn’t respond there either. Interestingly, this is not the first time ‘pirate’ subtitles have been used on a streaming service. In the past, Netflix was caught using “unauthorized” fansubs as well. In addition, American anime distributor Funimation previously used ‘pirate’ subs in their dubbing room.

  8. Radiohead has always taken a more thoughtful, less kneejerk approach to how it handles the kinds of situations that many others in the recording industry tend to respond to by freaking out. Back in 2007, in the midst of the worldwide freakout over piracy, Radiohead released a surprise album, telling fans they could pay what they wanted to download it (while also selling a more expensive "box set", giving its biggest fans a good reason to pay extra. The band has also been supportive of file sharing and even leaked some of its own tracks via BitTorrent. So perhaps this following story shouldn't be seen as too much of a surprise (though, I imagine it was a surprise to whoever hacked Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke). As noted in that parenthetical, someone apparently hacked Yorke, and somehow got access to a set of 18 minidiscs of somewhat random/eclectic material that Yorke had recorded in the 1996/97 timeframe, when the band was working on its seminal Ok Computer album. The hackers apparently then asked Yorke/Radiohead for $150,000 not to release the material. The band chose not to give in to the hackers, who then did leak the material. However, soon after the material was leaked, the band announced (via Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood's Instagram) that the band was now officially "releasing" that material on Bandcamp for £18 (or more) and donating any funds raised to Extinction Rebellion (a climate change advocacy group). https://www.instagram.com/p/BykT-NOA...ource=ig_embed Greenwood's writeup -- titled "Walter Sobchak vs Bunny's toe, as an amusing nod towards the extortion attempt in The Big Lebowski -- is worth reading: Subject: Walter Sobchak vs Bunny's toe We got hacked last week - someone stole Thom's minidisk archive from around the time of OK Computer, and reportedly demanded $150,000 on threat of releasing it. So instead of complaining - much - or ignoring it, we're releasing all 18 hours on Bandcamp in aid of Extinction Rebellion. Just for the next 18 days. So for £18 you can find out if we should have paid that ransom. Never intended for public consumption (though some clips did reach the cassette in the OK Computer reissue) it's only tangentially interesting. And very, very long. Not a phone download. Rainy out, isn't it though? And yes, the file is quite large -- approaching 2GB -- and the band itself says it's not that interesting. But, of course, fans are interested, because that's what fandom is about. In fact, it's quite interesting to see that a bunch of fans have put together a crowdsourced Google Doc creating a track listing and annotation of what's in the files (though, they also have to explain that they weren't the ones who hacked Yorke's stuff in the first place). The notes themselves are kind of interesting: https://i.imgur.com/obB98Oa.png As with all such things, this could easily have turned into the band just complaining about a situation that basically everyone agrees is unfair and unpleasant. However, Radiohead, of all bands, appears to have been quick to turn what is undoubtedly a crappy situation into a positive one that both supports a charity they like and builds tremendous goodwill with fans (while making the hackers look awful). There's a key point in all of this that is worth noting, and it's one that we've tried to make for years about piracy: we're not arguing that piracy is somehow a good thing. However, we have argued that piracy happens. The question is how you respond to it, and whether or not you can turn it into a positive situation. Too many in the music industry have taken piracy and turned a bad situation into something worse -- pissing off fans, annoying people, and doing damage to their own brand. Radio head has long realized it's better to do the exact opposite. That's not cheering on the hacking (or piracy), but noting that when a bad thing happens, you might as well figure out how to make the best of it.

  10. Quentin Tarantino confirms his Star Trek movie will be R-rated and contain lots of profanity. Many were surprised when it was announced the fan-favorite auteur was developing a new film in the iconic sci-fi franchise, which typically looks to appeal to a wider, more general audience (on the movie side, anyway). Tarantino is one of the most popular big-name directors working today, but his films tend to be heavy on bloody violence, colorful language, and other hallmarks that wouldn't necessarily jive with Star Trek on the surface. But it's also those unique sensibilities that have some believing Tarantino could give Star Trek the shot in the arm it desperately needs. Ten years ago, Star Trek reached a new level of viability when the first of the J.J. Abrams reboots made its way into theaters. Sadly, just a handful of years later, the Kelvin Timeline is basically defunct. After 2016's Star Trek Beyond underwhelmed at the box office (despite earning positive reviews), a fourth film never came into fruition. Paramount pulled the plug on the project earlier this year, but Tarantino's Trek remains on the table for the time being. And the director is already teasing it'll fit right in line with the rest of his filmography. Speaking with Empire, Tarantino provided updates on his Star Trek movie. He enthusiastically responded, "Oh yeah!" when asked if it would feature profanity. Confirming what's already been reported, Tarantino also stated the movie will be gunning for an R rating: “It’s an R-rated movie. If I do it, it’ll be R-rated... There’s a script that exists for it now. I need to weigh in on it, but I haven’t been able to do that yet.” The Revenant screenwriter Mark L. Smith was hired to pen the script for the new Star Trek back in December 2017. Tarantino has been busy working on his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (due in theaters this July), so he hasn't had much time to dedicate to Trek. Once Hollywood is in the rearview mirror, Tarantino can then hop aboard the Enterprise and start ironing out is first sci-fi feature. If Tarantino does call the shots on Star Trek, it would mark his tenth directorial effort, and in the past he's talked about retiring after making 10 films. He has indicated he would extend his career by one movie specifically for Star Trek, so perhaps he would direct another original movie as a career sendoff. As exciting a proposition this is, there are still a lot of factors that need to be determined. Namely, there's some confusion over whether or not it would feature the main Kelvin Timeline cast. Reports indicated Tarantino's movie would be a standalone feature free from any pre-established continuity, but Zachary Quinto (who played Spock in the Kelvin films) said the Abrams cast would be returning. It's worth mentioning those actors are game to return for another ride on the Enterprise, and the ensemble is one of the most-praised elements of the Kelvin Timeline. If the Original Series crew is part of Tarantino's script, then they should be brought back for one more Star Trek movie.

  14. Paramount Animation president Mireille Soria is bringing girl power to the unit — literally. The studio, which boasts a mostly female senior staff, is in early development on a Spice Girls movie among a slate eyeing two releases a year, starting in 2020. All five members of the iconic '90s group — Melanie Brown (Scary), Emma Bunton (Baby), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty), Geri Halliwell (Ginger) and Victoria Beckham (Posh) are on board, with Simon Fuller producing and Karen McCullah and Kiwi Smith writing the screenplay. The animated feature will include Spice Girls classics as well as new songs. The Spice Girls "had an idea that we've been developing," Soria said. "They are very involved." Meanwhile, May 2020 release The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge has added Awkwafina and Reggie Watts to its voice cast, with Cyndi Lauper (and her co-writer Rob Hyman) working on original songs for the film. Described as a “love letter to SpongeBob’s beloved creator Steven Hillenburg (who passed away last November), the fans, and the residents of Bikini Bottom,” the project is being directed by Tim Hill and produced by Ryan Harris with choreography by Mia Michaels. The first 3D computer animated SpongeBob movie, it will also feature a score by Hans Zimmer and original song by Ali Dee. That will be followed in July 2020 by graphic novel adaptation Rumble, formerly titled Monster on a Hill, a Hamish Grieve-helmed partnership with ReelFX and Walden Media. Soria also reveals that Paramount Animation has inked a first-look deal with the joint venture between Imagine Entertainment and Sydney-based animation studio Animal Logic (Happy Feet), which already has two movies in development, one of which Imagine's Ron Howard plans to direct. In 2022, the previously announced Chinese American fantasy adaptation The Tiger's Apprentice, due Feb. 11, will be joined in the summer by Jersey Crabs, a Grease-like musical set on the Jersey Shore where sea crab tourists clash with land crab townies. Lorene Scafaria is writing, with David Dobkin producing and Megan Dobkin exec producing. The Tiger’s Apprentice is based on the best-selling book series by Lawrence Yep, with David Magee (Life of Pi) and Harry Cripps on board to write the screenplay, it follows a teenage Chinese American boy who learns that he is the guardian of the Chinese Zodiac. The team includes director Carlos Baena (a Pixar alum), producer Jane Startz and executive producers Raman Hui (Monster Hunt) and Kane Lee. The studio is also in early development on a Mighty Mouse project planned as a hybrid live action/animation movie based on the Paramount IP. Jon & Erich Hoeber are on board as writers, and Karen Rosenfelt and Bob Cort as producers. Soria credits Jim Gianopulos—who came over from Fox to serve as Paramount’s chairman and CEO in March 2017—for the vision to build an animation studio at Paramount, whose animation history ranges from Betty Boop to Rango. Since she joined Paramount Animation in mid-2017, she's assembled a senior team made up primarily of women with a long history in animation, including exec vp Sandra Rabins; senior vp Katherine MacDonald, vp of production and development Emily Nordwind; and creative exec Maya Kambe. Nat Hopper (previously senior vp of production at Fox) joined Paramount Animation as senior vp in March. "We are all about a diverse slate of movies, but the common denominator being quality, story, heart," says Soria. Perhaps not counted among that group: Skydance's Luck, for which she had been providing creative notes (the two studios have a first-look marketing and distribution pact). After Skydance hired ousted Disney/Pixar chief John Lasseter in January, Soria told her team that Paramount Animation would no longer work creatively with that division.
  15. The BAFTAs are returning to their usual slot in mid-February and their traditional spot two weeks before the Academy Awards. When the Oscars move, so do the BAFTAs. Less than 24 hours after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its dates for the 2021 and 2022 Oscars ceremonies, the British Academy followed suit on Wednesday. The Oscars ceremony is moving back to its original slot on the last Sunday in February for both years after the Academy announced earlier in the year that its 2020 ceremony would be held at its earliest-ever date of Feb. 9. The 2021 BAFTA film awards ceremony has now been set for Feb. 14, and the 2022 ceremony will take place on Feb. 13, both returning to their traditional slot two weeks prior to the Oscars. As previously announced, the 2020 ceremony is taking place on Feb. 2, making for a gap of just one week between the two giant awards shows.
  16. In a surprise announcement to conclude its E3 presentation Tuesday, Nintendo revealed that it was working on a follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch, debuting a brief teaser video that is already driving fans wild online. Outside of the project’s development, little about the sequel is known, including plot details or a release date. The teaser video was equally enigmatic, appearing to show Link and Zelda exploring a cave filled with mysterious lights before they happen across a character that looks like a decayed version of Ganondorf, whose appearance causes a city to rise from the ground. The first Breath of the Wild game was released for Nintendo Switch and Wii U consoles in 2017, and was heavily praised by critics and fans alike, going on to become the best-selling game in the long-running Zelda series, which launched in 1986.
