  16. The DC Extended Universe has had a fascinating tenure in theaters, full of peaks and valleys. Filmmaker Zack Snyder kickstarted the property up with Man of Steel, before further expanding it with Batman v Superman and Justice League. Superman's origin story might have been a contained story free of crossovers, but it turns out that Snyder was already doing set up for other characters, including the villainous Doomsday. Luckily, Snyder recently explained some of the easter eggs he added on the down low. Zack Snyder is a director whose projects often contain even more content than audiences can notice on first glance. Snyder recently participated in a digital watch party for Man of Steel, where he was able to peel back the curtain on the DC blockbuster's development. While watch the sequences set on Krypton, the filmmaker revealed that the planet's moon was damaged as a nod do Doomsday's eventual introduction. As he put it, Mind blown. It looks like Doomsday's appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was inevitable, as Zack Snyder was eager for an opportunity to bring the hulking DC villain to the big screen. That's exactly what he did, with Doomsday providing a foe that would unite Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman for the very first time. Zack Snyder's Man of Steel revelation comes to us from the watch party he did over on Vero. He regularly uses the social media to directly communicate with the fans, often teasing the contents of the mythical Snyder Cut of Justice League. That's exactly what he did when doing a re-watch of Man of Steel, revealing that Doomsday was a character planned to appear in the DCEU since its inception. Doomsday is a character that's had a long tenure on the page. The evil being of destruction and rage goes back to prehistoric times on Krypton, where the living weapon was called "The Ultimate." Its destructive powers were proven early on, as he even damaged one of Krypton's moons. If you look closely during the opening sequence of Man of Steel, you can see said moon in the top right corner of the frame-- including some visible damage. Zack Snyder knew he couldn't introduce Doomsday in Man of Steel, but hoped that more movies would follow the Superman origin story, allowing him to further expand the franchise. That's exactly what came to pass, with Batman v Superman bringing in the likes of Doomsday and Wonder Woman for one final epic battle. As a reminder you can check out the opening scene from Man of Steel, and look out for the damaged Kyrptonian moon, courtesy of Doomsday. Did you catch it? This is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment from Man of Steel, which the majority of moviegoers likely didn't on their first (or second) viewing of the movie. But the Doomsday easter egg is there, and Zack Snyder didn't have to wait long before introducing the Superman-killing monster to the DC Extended Universe. It's also notable that the Doomsday that was in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice likely isn't the same monster that damaged Krypton's moon back in the day. The one who battled the DC trio in BvS was a creation of Lex Luthor's, which combined ancient Kryptonian tech with General Zodd's corpse and Lex's own blood. In the comics, the Doomsday that causes chaos on Krypton is ultimately jettisoned into space, eventually landing on Planet Earth. The next installment in the DCEU is Wonder Woman 1984 on August 14th. In the meantime, check out our 2020 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
  17. This might legitimately be the biggest episode of ReelBlend. And yes, I remember that we did a near-three-hour interview with Quentin Tarantino. But this week, ReelBlend Patron Saint Damien Chazelle visits the show for the very first time (!!) to discuss his recent stint on Netflix’s The Eddy, as well as his spectacular filmography that includes Whiplash, La La Land and First Man. The show has been on the Chazelle bandwagon since our earliest days, raving about his talents and marveling at his Oscar win. It was a dream, and it finally came true. But that’s not all. If you have paid attention to the show at all in the past few months, you knew that Sean was documenting the movement of the Release the Snyder Cut campaign. This passionate group has been lobbying for the release of Zack Snyder’s true cut of Justice League, a movie that was reshot yet still branded with Snyder’s name. Well, this week, HBO Max agreed to air the cut in 2021, and the guys broke down that decision on this week’s show. Massive stories. And yet, we still managed to review The Lovebirds, and play a Blend game for Steve Carell. Busy show! We hope you enjoy.
  18. Ana De Armas and Ben Affleck had been rumored to be dating for several months after rumors began swirling in March. While it seemed as if they had been social distancing together, a more orchestrated post confirming their relationship didn’t surface until earlier this month. Now it seems to be the real deal, we’ve all been wondering how Affleck’s ex Jennifer Garner has been feeling right? Well, you may not need to wonder much longer. While Jennifer Garner hasn’t straight-up come out and said she’s in favor of the relationship, if reports are to be believed, she’s “happy” for Ben Affleck and his new partner. Over at Us Weekly a source said it’s always “sad” to see someone move on but that Garner is allegedly “ultimately happy that he is happy” and also “in a good and healthy place.” Until Jennifer Garner officially confirms her feelings on Ben Affleck it’s hard to tell if this is an exact assessment of how the Camping and Love, Simon actress is really feeling, but she’s not really the type to air dirty laundry either way. In the past, she’s actually been really supportive of her ex even when he has dealt with personal struggles. For example, when Ben Affleck was struggling and went to rehab just before The Way Back was supposed to film, Jennifer Garner called director Gavin O’Conner and worked through keeping the actor on the project. That’s a confirmed story from O’Conner himself, so it’s clear that she is supportive of Affleck even if the two are no longer together. Given they co-parent their children – daughters Seraphina and Violet and son Samuel – together, it’s good they got to a place where they can be there for each other. This is especially true given how long it took for them to come to a custody agreement after splitting up in 2015. Meanwhile, while Ana De Armas and Ben Affleck have been enjoying food and exotic locations together, Jennifer Garner has been drinking wine and doing a lot of laundry. Life as the mom, amirite? It should be noted that Garner has seemingly moved on as well and has been seemingly dating John Miller, a CEO for Cali group, for some time now, though the couple are private and not often photographed together. Outside of her personal life, Jennifer Garner will next appear in the upcoming comedy Yes Day. Ben Affleck’s next film will be with Hollywood it girl Ana de Armas. Called Deep Water, it’s a thriller about cheating during marriage and the lengths people may go to avoid divorce even though they no longer fulfill one another. Ana de Armas will also appear in the next Bond film, No Time To Die, which was initially scheduled for release earlier this year.
  19. At one time, The Batman was intended to be a continuation for Ben Affleck’s version of The Caped Crusader, but now it’s instead giving audiences yet another new interpretation of the DC Comics hero. Robert Pattinson is donning the cape and cowl this time around, and one of his co-stars is Jeffrey Wright, who’s playing GCPD ally James Gordon and is promising that the movie will be the biggest evolution for the Caped Crusader’s mythology yet. Here’s what Jeffrey Wright had to say when he was recently asked about his time working on The Batman: To say that this is the biggest Batman mythos shift since the character debuted in Detective Comics #27 is a bold claim, even more so given how many times the superhero has already appeared in live-action. As far as tone goes, Matt Reeves revealed years back that The Batman will be a noir-driven story that highlights Bruce Wayne’s detective skills, which have rarely been featured in past movies, so that’s certainly one way for the movie to stand out. Jeffrey Wright provided this unique insight on The Batman while appearing on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show (via THR), adding: No specific plot details for The Batman have been revealed to the public, although it will take place early into the eponymous protagonist’s crimefighting career. It’s also been strongly indicated that the story is inspired by The Long Halloween, which saw Batman tracking down a serial killer and running into many of his iconic adversaries along the way. Jeffrey Wright also mentioned how The Batman’s Batmobile is a good example of what he was laying out in the above quotes, with the vehicle being a “badass muscle car,” yet still “grounded” in Gotham City and Americana. The Batman kicked off principal photography at the beginning of the year, but due to the current health crisis, production shut down in mid-March and the movie’s release was delayed. It remains to be seen when cameras will begin rolling on the project again, although it could happen sooner rather than later. In addition to Robert Pattinson and Jeffrey Wright, The Batman’s cast includes ZoĂ« Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson as Bella ReĂĄl, along with Gil Perez-Abraham, Charlie Carver and Max Carver cast in undisclosed roles. Along with directing the feature, Matt Reeves also co-wrote the script with Mattson Tomlin. The Batman is now casting its shadow in theaters on October 1, 2021, and we here at CinemaBlend will keep you updated on how the movie is coming along. You can learn what other DC movies are on the way with our handy guide.
  20. Tom Hardy’s Capone, directed and written by Josh Trank, was originally meant to have a limited theatrical release before being sent to VOD. However, that quickly changed. With other movies like Trolls World Tour going straight to VOD, the studio behind Capone followed suit. Now we’re getting a little taste of how much money it made going straight to homes. According to Deadline, Vertical Entertainment, the studio behind Capone, reported that it raked in upwards of $2.5 million dollars in 10 days. Capone first released on May 12 and within its first three days climbed to the #1 spot on the iTunes charts. So, while it certainly has momentum, a strong release, and an impressive 10-day haul, it’s important to note that Capone’s budget was reported to be around $20.6 million. So the movie has a ways to go before becoming profitable. Even though Capone had a strong VOD release, it got a mostly cold reception from critics, citing some of its merits while most saw only flaws. CinemaBlend’s own Sean O’Connell said Tom Hardy’s performance carries the movie, the movie's critical response has been largely negative. In fact, Capone's audience and critic score on Rotten Tomatoes are consistently low. It’s impossible to know if Capone would have done better if it had a theatrical release. However, we might learn something from how other movies did. Earlier this year, Universal reported that Trolls World Tour broke records after it released the movie to VOD, also reaching the #1 spot on several charts and earning over $100 million in sales in three weeks-- a sum earned much faster than its predecessor Trolls five month run in theaters. As one can imagine, the sudden shift of studios releasing movies directly to VOD has been controversial. After Universal announced they would put their movies direct to VOD, AMC announced they would no longer screen Universal movies. How it all shakes out remains to be seen. The latest movie to released straight to homes is Warner Bros. Scoob! Originally intended to release in theaters on May 15, Warner Bros. decided to put it on VOD rather than push it back on the schedule. The latest reports indicates that animated movie has hit #1 for numbers of transactions. While Capone releasing direct to VOD made quite a first impression among the movie community, so we'll have to see how it continues to perform on the charts in the weeks to come. We’ll keep you updated as the story progresses.
  21. Disney Springs at Walt Disney World began to welcome a few guests back yesterday, but it did so without any idea when the parks themselves will be open. Today, Universal Studios Orlando presented its plan for reopening to Orange County's Economic Recovery Task Force and the board just approved the plan unanimously, which means the resort will open to the general public on June 5. In the presentation, the plan that was given would see the park open on June 1 to employees only, who would be the first to act as a sort of bench test to see how the new policies and procedures work. After a couple days of that, some VIPs and annual pass holders would be invited to the parks, to increase the volume of guests slightly and continue to test how things are working. Assuming everything in the test days goes according to plan, the park would open, to a limited capacity of the general public, on June 5. There will, of course, be a lot of changes to the way that Universal Orlando handles guests. Face coverings will be required for both employees and all guests. Disposable masks will be provided to guests who do not arrive with them. In addition, things like valet parking will be halted outside the parks, and single rider lines will be closed, as maximizing attraction capacity is not currently a priority. This will make Universal Orlando Resort the biggest domestic theme park to open when it does, in what is not just over two weeks. It's possible that Walt Disney World could even try to open sooner, though that seems unlikely.. Currently Walt Disney World isn't taking hotel reservations until July, and the fact is that Disney has a lot more to get ready. Disney will be making a presentation to the same task force, but has not yet done so. It does appear the Florida theme parks will be opening before their equivalent locations in California. That state has been slower to reopen in general and thus Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood likely have more closure time in front of them. A lot of eyes will likely be on Universal Orlando Resort now. If everything works as expected, then it may help other parks throughout the rest of the country gain the necessary confidence to do the same. As Universal learns what works and what doesn't other parks will be able to adapt their plans with the best practices. Now, the question becomes, how soon will the guests return? With travel still difficult during the outbreak, it may be mostly locals who visit Universal in the short term, though will all theme parks having been closed for the last couple months, there might be a lot of people willing to go to great lengths just to have that experience again.
  22. DC's Justice League hit theaters back in 2017, but its continued to dominate conversations within the film world for the years that followed. Fans have been campaigning for the release of Snyder Cut since the movie hit theaters, since Joss Whedon and Warner Bros. made liberal changes to the movie following Zack Snyder's sudden departure. Now The Snyder Cut is finally becoming a reality, being released on HBO Max in 2021 after its completion. And now the movie's cast has reacted to the news. The Snyder Cut felt more like a pipe dream for years, as the fandom continued to raise money and make their voices known. But the cast has been vocal in their support of the movement over the past few years. So when it was revealed that Justice League's alternate cut would arrive on HBO Max, many of the cast took to social media to respond. Even Ben Affleck, who already departed his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DCEU. His post was simple, but the idea of more Batfleck is certainly an exciting one for the fandom. 18.2K people are talking about this While Ben Affleck wasn't kind enough to reveal exactly when in 2021 the Snyder Cut will be released, his tweet makes it clear that he's supportive of Justice League's alternate version. Affleck, like everyone, shot a ton of footage for Zack Snyder's vision that ultimately landed on the cutting room floor. And the movie's disappointing critical and box office performance seemingly informed his decision to retire from the character. I'm eager to see how much additional footage will be produced for Justice League's Snyder Cut. If the filmmaker needs to rework some of Batman's material, could that inspire Ben Affleck to once again don the Dark Knight's cape and cowl? It's an interesting concept, especially with Robert Pattinson set to make his debut as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves' The Batman. Of course, Ben Affleck isn't the only Justice League star that's pumped for The Snyder Cut. Aquaman actor Jason Momoa has been a vocal supporter of the alternate cut, and he posted on his own social media with: My man. Jason Momoa's post about the Snyder Cut was a bit more lengthy then Ben Affleck's, but just as exciting. Momoa is known for his boisterous personality, which helped to buoy his solo movie Aquaman. And it seems like the Game of Thrones alum is pumped for Zack Snyder's original vision for the project to finally arrive in theaters. Once its completed, that is. Since the studio pivoted to Joss Whedon's version of Justice League, there's plenty of work that still needs to be done in order to make the Snyder Cut into a reality. Zack Snyder has been given a substantial budget to complete his verion, which will be used to edit the project together and complete its visual effects. It's currently unclear if the Snyder Cut will arrive as one long movie, or a series of episodes on HBO Max. Ray Fisher played Cyborg in Justice League, and his role was seriously cut down once Zack Snyder departed the set due to a personal tragedy. As such, Fisher also expressed his excitement over the Snyder Cut becoming a reality. As he put it, Ray Fisher appears to be very appreciative of the #ReleaseTheSnyder movement. Because now that Zack Snyder's original plans for the movie can come to fruition, we'll likely see much more of Cyborg. Snyder did a ton of world building with his version of Justice League, but Joss Whedon and company ultimately cut plot points for Cyborg, Aquaman, and The Flash. It should also be interesting to see if Cyborg's appearance changes at all as Justice League's Snyder Cut is prepared to head to streaming. Many fans took umbrage with the theatrical cut's visual effects, especially where Cyborg and Steppenwolf were concerned. Only time will tell, as Zack Snyder and company will have to be smart with their reported $20-30 million budget. Justice League will arrive on HBO Max sometime in 2021, and the next installment in the DCEU is Wonder Woman 1984 on August 14th. In the meantime, check out our 2020 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
  23. It must feel like an overwhelming undertaking when you’re an actor suddenly thrust into a superhero role. A heavy weight is placed on your shoulders, literally and figuratively, with the almost mandatory task of getting into serious shape. Comedian, actor, and writer Kumail Nanjiani felt this responsibility when he took on his role in Marvel’s The Eternals, and decided to rise to the occasion despite the high bar. Recently on Late Night with Seth Meyers Kumail Nanjiani explained why he took this so seriously. Here’s what he said: The superhero workout regimen is no small feat, something Kumail Nanjiani clearly understood going in. Still, he had a strong motivation to make it happen and transform his physique. That’s not to say the experience hasn’t been hard on him and his family. He later joked about wife Emily V. Gordon, saying: This isn’t the only time Kumail Nanjiani has spoken in depth about getting ripped for his role in The Eternals. From what he describes, the challenge wasn’t the workouts as much as the extreme diet. For a year he hadn’t eaten pizza, donuts, refined sugar, or carbs, and would snack on sugar snap peas as a treat. Another notable comedian that totally transformed his physique for a superhero role is Chris Pratt. Before he being cast as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt carried some extra pounds on Parks and Recreation as Andy Dwyer. Like Kumail Nanjiani, he took the Star-Lord role seriously enough to drop the weight and get ripped. Typically, highly focused diet and exercise seems to be the standard regimen for these actors, some actors take it even a step further. Tom Holland, for instance, said he went to gym where they strap electric belts on you that electrocute you while you workout. He said it felt like a “dull tingling," which kind of brings a new meaning to the Peter tingle. While some actors hit the weights and go to extremes to get absolutely ripped, other actors, like Benedict Cumberbatch, aren’t so intense about it. He said you can do the body-building thing or just diligently work on your body through a long period of time with a healthy diet. We’ll all get to see Kumail Nanjiani’s character Kingo in action when Marvel’s The Eternals releases on Februray 12th, 2021.
  24. A Quiet Place made a lot of fans when it was released back in 2018, if for no other reason than its incredibly unique premise, and the equally unique film-going experience that came along with it. Being in a theater full of people, all trying desperately to stay quiet, was part of what made the movie itself so good. Of course, depending on your perspective, A Quiet Place may not have been the best title considering that it doesn't quite capture the proper tension. John Krasinski and Emily Blunt have some alternative ideas. In a video that was clearly filmed during the release of the original A Quiet Place, but only recently published, BBC Radio 1 asked John Krasinski and Emily Blunt how else they might have titled the film. Krasinski suggested a title a lot of us were probably thinking about while we sat in the theater watching the movie. It had to have been a thought that passed through the heads of many people watching A Quiet Place in theaters. With everybody else in he audience trying to remain as silent as possible, it not like people weren't going to notice you if that happened. Nevermind that within the world of the movie, doing so could get you eaten by aliens. However, I think John Krasinski's wife and A Quiet Place co-star Emily Blunt has the real line on what the movie should have been called, as it represents even better what both the characters and the audience were experiencing over the course of the movie. If you had a silent anxiety attack the first time around, then get ready to do it again. While A Quiet Place Part II came so close to being released in theaters that many critics have seen the film, the plug was ultimately pulled on release. The movie is now set to debut September 4. And it's a good thing too, because the unique aspect of the original film, which one assumes will carry through to the sequel, practically requires a theatrical experience. If every movie that was delayed was released online tomorrow, A Quiet Place Part II would probably suffer the most. It's not about the giant screen and it's certainly not about the high end sound system, it's about the communal experience of watching it in a large theater. Without that, I'm not sure the movie would be the same. Director John Kransinski himself said he wanted people to see the movie together in the theater, which is why the decision to delay the movie was made.
