  2. Timothée Chalamet is Paul Atreides in the first image from Denis Villeneuve's Dune movie, which remains scheduled for a December 2020 release date. One of the more influential sci-fi novels of the 20th century, Frank Herbert's 1965 Dune novel has proven to be a tough nut to crack, as far as screen adaptations go. David Lynch's 1984 film was a box office bomb (though it's since amassed a cult following), while John Harrison's 2000 TV miniseries was much more faithful than Lynch's film, but limited by what it could do in terms of budget.

By comparison, Warner Bros. and Legendary have spent a pretty penny on the new Dune movie, which is intended to be the first of a two-part adaptation of Herbert's source material. On top of that, it boasts lots of big name talent on both sides of the camera, with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 filmmaker Denis Villeneuve directing a cast led by Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, and Rebecca Ferguson, to name but a few of the actors. The three star here as the members of House Atreides, a powerful family that gains control of the desert planet Arrakis in the story's futuristic setting.

Vanity Fair has now unveiled the first look image from the film (see below), showing Chalamet as Paul Atreides leaving his life of comfort and privilege on "the oceanic world of Caladan" for the far more dangerous (and scorching) realm of Arrakis. The outlet has also confirmed Dune is still being planned for a December 18 release this year, with Villeneuve saying the following in a statement:

Dune was made by people from all over the world. Many of these people are like family to me, and they’re very much in my thoughts. I’m so proud to showcase their hard work. I look forward to a time when we can all get together again as Dune was made to be seen on the big screen
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Chalamet provided some insight into Paul's journey in the film, pointing out he's on "an anti-hero’s-journey of sorts" and believes he's going to Arrakis to study his father (Isaac) and learn to become a leader "before he comes of age, hopefully a decade later, or something like that.” Villeneuve has specifically described Dune as being "Star Wars for adults" in the past, though - as many fans have pointed out - Paul's story and the Dune mythology have more in common with a fantasy epic like The Lord of the Rings than George Lucas' classic space soap opera. That aside, WB is banking heavily on Dune being the potential beginning of a franchise, despite the property's iffy history on the big screen and Villeneuve's own spotty track record at the box office (Blade Runner 2049, while acclaimed, was a commercial flop).

For the time being, however, the movie's December release date is a big question mark. Seeing as filming on Dune wrapped last summer, it should've already been well into post-production by the time the coronavirus pandemic took a turn for the worse back in March. Still, it's less a question of whether the movie will be ready in time and more a matter of whether WB is going to shift it to make room for all the other 2020 films that've already been delayed. The studio has yet to postpone Christopher Nolan's Tenet from its July release date, but it's expected to do so in the near future and may elect to push it to December, replacing Dune as that month's big-budget sci-fi tentpole. The spice must flow, as they say on Arrakis, but it may have to wait until next year.

    Dune (2020)
    Release Date: Dec 18, 2020

  3. Developer Ubisoft is offering up Assassin’s Creed II, one of the premier installments of its historical killer-for-hire franchise, to players for free starting next week. With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic forcing people to stay at home for long periods of time, video game companies are offering up top-tier games to download free-of-charge, hoping to give gamers something to pass the time with while in social isolation.

Released in 2009, Assassin’s Creed II continues the modern-day story of Desmond Miles, a seemingly unassuming bartender tasked with unraveling an ancient conspiracy by living through the memories of his distant ancestors. This includes Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a son of a nobleman during the time of the Italian Renaissance who seeks to avenge his father’s murder at the hands of the Templar, a shadowy organization bent on controlling the world. To this end, Ezio allies himself with famous historical figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Caterina Sforza as he trains in the way of the Assassin and travels across an open-world rendition of Italy in what many consider to be the best game in the Assassin’s Creed series. Now, players will be able to embark on this adventure for free starting next week.

Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad broke the news on his Twitter page earlier this morning, posting a Chinese promotional image of Assassin’s Creed II being offered free to download on Ubisoft's Uplay service starting this Tuesday. In addition, both of the game’s follow-up spin-offs – 2010’s Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and 2011’s Assassin’s Creed: Revelations – are apparently being offered at a discount. Check out the full tweet below

This is just the latest in a string of free offerings from online services like Steam and the Epic Games Store, which have provided players with a number of their most popular titles to download free-of-charge over the past couple of months. These have ranged from big-name titles like Ubisoft’s own Watch Dogs to quirky indie games like The Stanley Parable, and has served as an act of goodwill and fun distraction in the face of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Just a few weeks ago, Ubisoft itself offered up Rayman Legends for free on its Uplay service in a manner not unlike what it plans to do with Assassin's Creed II.

Having a hit title like Assassin’s Creed II available for free will be welcome news to both fans and newcomers, as the sequel made several improvements to the 2007 original’s open-world, stealth killing gameplay in addition to having one of the Assassin Creed series’ most well-liked protagonists and plotlines. Also, with several hours of runtime to its name, Assassin’s Creed II is a great way to pass the long days stuck at home during a pandemic. Players will be able to strap on the signature wrist-blades of Ezio Auditore da Firenze for themselves when Assassin’s Creed II becomes free-to-download this Tuesday.

  4. Star Wars fans are raving about Rosario Dawson being cast as Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian season 2. Their excitement is not only because it brings a popular Star Wars character into live-action for the first time, but also because it's fan casting becoming a reality. Initially debuting on Star Wars: The Clone Wars as the plucky Padawan of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano quickly became a fan favorite over the series' run.

Season 7 of The Clone Wars is currently airing on Disney+, and Ahsoka is featured as a central character over the last half of that final season, which is expected to cover the events immediately after Ahsoka walked away from the Jedi, through the Siege of Mandalore, and culminating with the fall of the Republic, including Order 66, which led to the murders of much of the Jedi Order. Season 7 will likely portray how Ahsoka escaped the clones turning on the Jedi and could set up her involvement in season 2 of The Mandalorian, which is set six years after the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi.

After her feature film debut in Larry Clark's controversial drama Kids, Rosario Dawson has had a diversified and prolific career. In addition to sci-fi/fantasy films like Sin City and Men in Black 2, her role as Claire Temple in the Marvel Netflix series linked all the heroes of The Defenders. Dawson has been a popular Ahsoka fan cast since 2017 when one fan tweeted Dawson about whether she'd like to play the role, and Dawson replied: "Ummmm… yes, please?! #AhsokaLives." However, Dawson's path to the part was not a straight line.

As late as the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Ahsoka's live-action portrayal remained an open question. In the battle of Exegol, Rey (Daisy Ridley) hears the voices of departed Jedi spirits encouraging her in confronting the Emperor, including Ahsoka's, and fans of the character noticed that the voice of Ahsoka was Ashley Eckstein, who originated the role in the animated series.

However, after the official casting announcement of Dawson for The Mandalorian season 2 and Eckstein's classy response to the news, fans now know that Ahsoka's story will continue after The Clone Wars' finale and that her portrayal is in capable hands. Dawson's feisty strength, most notably in her supporting role in Alexander, and her ability to handle action sequences, evidenced in her sci-fi films, make her a perfect choice for Ahsoka. Moreover, fan images of Dawson outfitted in digital make-up and costumes easily show that she's a dead ringer for the role.

Though details about The Mandalorian season 2's plot are scant, Moff Gideon wielding the Darksaber at the end of season 1 implies connections to The Clone Wars' and Star Wars: Rebels' plotlines. What is more, Dawson is the right age to play Ahsoka as a more seasoned Force user, which could be important since The Child (a.k.a. Baby Yoda) is being looked after by Pedro Pascal's Mando. Running into someone who is familiar with the ways of the Force will no doubt come in handy in dealing with the mysterious 50-year-old toddler. Whether Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka appears in an multi-episode arc, just as a one-off, or as a backdoor pilot for an Ahsoka Tano series remains to be seen, but fans of the character and The Mandalorian have plenty to look forward to with Rosario Dawson wielding Ahsoka iconic dual lightsaber.

  5. Dwayne Johnson has revealed that he was cast as Hobbs in Fast Five after he lost the role of Jack Reacher to Tom Cruise. Cruise would take on the role in both 2012's Jack Reacher and 2016's Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. Both films performed well at the worldwide box office, with the former pulling in $218 million and the latter taking in $162 million respectively.

Jack Reacher is based on a series of beloved novels from author Lee Child. The novels focus on an investigator named Jack Reacher who investigates suspicious activity and constantly gets himself into precarious situations in order to bring the truth to light. The first film was based on Child's Reacher novel, One Shot and was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Cruise's frequent collaborator, while the sequel was based on the story Never Go Back. The second film was directed by Edward Zwick, who directed Cruise in The Last Samurai, and was written by Zwick, Richard Went and Marshall Herskovitz.

In a new Q&A on his Instagram page, Dwayne Johnson revealed that he was only cast in Fast Five after he lost out on the role of Jack Reacher to Tom Cruise. In response to a question regarding if there was a role he lost to another actor that he really wanted, Johnson states, "So, all of my roles, from the beginning of my career, I've been a lucky son of a bitch that they've been created and designed for me - except Jack Reacher." He goes on to say, "Now, this was ten years ago, and I was in a much different place, I recognize that. Tom was the biggest movie star in the world, and I was not." However, Johnson feels thankful he lost out on the role, saying, "Universe works in funny ways though, as when that door shut on me, another door opened with the opportunity to create a character from scratch that was of my DNA. The one and only bad ass, shit talkin’, gravity and reality defying, always winkin’ and having fun OUTLAW LAWMAN KNOWN AS LUKE HOBBS." His full response is below.

Though Johnson didn't get to take on the Reacher role, his addition as Hobbs in the Fast and Furious franchise helped jumpstart his career, breathing new life into the series and helping Fast Five coast along to the tune of $626 million worldwide. He would also star in the subsequent sequels which were even more financially successful; the last two films in the series both grossed over $1 billion worldwide. His character made such an impression that he was given his own spinoff film, Hobbs & Shaw, with franchise co-star Jason Statham. The spinoff also performed well, grossing an impressive $759 million worldwide, further showcasing Johnson's star power.

Despite both adaptations of Lee's novels being financially successful, a third film never came to pass. However, Jack Reacher is now moving to Amazon Prime, where he will have his own show. The series will have showrunner Nick Santora at the helm, who will also serve as the first season's head writer and executive producer. Author Lee Child will serve as an executive producer on the show as well and the first season will be based on Child's first Reacher novel, The Killing Floor. Though no lead actor has been announced for the role as of yet, Child will certainly have a say in who is chosen, especially since he thought Cruise was too old for the part.

The first Jack Reacher film was a pleasant surprise, a smart, well-written thriller anchored by an endlessly entertaining, offbeat performance from Cruise. Though he may not have been as physically accurate a choice for Lee's character as Johnson would have been, Cruise's interpretation was more faithful than fans gave it credit for. While it's fun to think about how Johnson would've fared in the role, he was much better suited for Hobbs - a character that helped reinvigorate the Fast and Furious franchise and spawn a highly successful career for the actor that has yielded terrific blockbuster entertainment. Regardless, it should be fascinating to see how the character fares in his own television show when Jack Reacher makes its debut on Amazon Prime.

  6. From Snoop Dogg to Willie Nelson, Pot Industry Tries to Build Brands

Snoop Dogg has his own line of marijuana. So does Willie Nelson. Melissa Etheridge has a marijuana-infused wine.

As the fast-growing marijuana industry emerges from the black market and starts looking like a mainstream industry, there’s a scramble to brand and trademark pot products.

The celebrity endorsements are just the latest attempt to add cachet to a line of weed. Snoop Dogg calls his eight strains of weed “Dank From the Doggfather Himself.” Nelson’s yet-to-be-released line says the pot is “born of the awed memories of musicians who visited Willie’s bus after a show.”

The pot industry’s makeshift branding efforts, from celebrity names on boxes of weed to the many weed-themed T-shirts and stickers common in towns with a legal marijuana market, show the industry taking halting steps toward the mainstream.

Problem is, those weed brands aren’t much more substantial than the labels they’re printed on. Patents and trademarks are largely regulated by the federal government, which considers marijuana an illegal drug and therefore ineligible for any sort of legal protection.

The result is a Wild West environment of marijuana entrepreneurs trying to stake claims and establish cross-state markets using a patchwork of state laws.

Consumers have no way of knowing that celebrity-branded pot is any different than what they could get in a plastic baggie from a corner drug dealer.

“You can’t go into federal court to get federal benefits if you’re a drug dealer,” said Sam Kamin, a University of Denver law professor who tracks marijuana law.

That doesn’t mean that the pot business isn’t trying.

Hundreds of marijuana-related patents have likely been requested from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, according to those who work in the industry. Exact numbers aren’t available because pending patent information isn’t public.

So far, federal authorities have either ignored or rejected marijuana patent and trademark requests, as in the 2010 case of a California weed-delivery service that applied to trademark its name, “The Canny Bus.”

“They haven’t issued a single patent yet. But generally speaking, there is broad agreement within the patent law community that they will,” said Eric Greenbaum, chief intellectual property officer for Vireo Health, which is seeking a patent for a strain of marijuana to treat seizures.

Companies like Vireo are betting that if marijuana becomes legal nationally, they will be first in line to claim legal ownership of whichever type of marijuana they have already developed.

Pot companies also are filing state-level trademarks, thereby avoiding the snag in a federal trademark application: the requirement that the mark is used in interstate commerce, which remains off-limits for pot companies.

In Colorado, for example, there are nearly 700 trade names and 200 trademarks registered that include the word “marijuana” or a synonym, Kamin said.

Pot producers also are claiming everything they can that doesn’t involve actual weed. So a marijuana company could trademark its logo or patent a process for packaging something, without mentioning that the “something” is marijuana.

The marijuana industry certainly has been on the receiving end of legal threats from other companies that do have trademark and patent protection. Cease-and-desist letters aren’t uncommon in the mailboxes of marijuana companies, whether it’s for making a candy that looks like a non-intoxicating brand or for selling a type of pot that includes a trademarked word or phrase in its name.

The Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., for example, says it has sent dozens of cease-and-desist letters to those selling a popular strain of pot known as Girl Scout Cookies or another called Thin Mints.

“The use of our trademarks in connection with drugs tarnishes the Girl Scouts name,” the organization says in the letter it has sent to pot sellers primarily in California, Colorado and Washington.

Last year, Hershey Co. sued two marijuana companies in Colorado and Washington for selling “Reefer’s” peanut butter cups and “Dabby Patty” candies, which resembled Hershey’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and York peppermint patties. Both pot companies agreed to stop selling the products and destroy any remaining inventory.

But the industry can’t use those same laws to protect its own brands.

“We’re in a new industry, where the benefits of federal protection aren’t open to us,” said John Lord, CEO of LivWell, a 10-store chain of Colorado marijuana shops that recently entered an agreement to sell Leafs By Snoop, the entertainer’s new line of marijuana.

LivWell grows the Snoop pot alongside many other strains but charges up to $175 more an ounce for the rapper’s brand, which is sold from behind a glittery in-store display.

“Brand differentiation is the normal progression of events,” said Lord, who wouldn’t share sales figures on the Snoop pot but says its performance has been “outstanding.”

“Consumers will see more and more of this in the future.”

  7. SteamDB keeps a list of upcoming free promotions so you can keep abreast of all the free weekends on Steam in advance. It also notes when games will be free-to-keep, which is why we can see that Total War: Shogun 2 will be given away to anyone who grabs it between April 27 and May 1.

Shogun 2 is nine years old but it's still my favorite of the historical Total War games, with a perfect map size to feel conquerable without having to throw away hundreds of hours and a theme that breathed life into blocks of troops marching across maps. Just last year Malindy Hetfeld reminisced about how beautiful and ambitious it was.

  9. New Poll Is Up

Time for a new poll. I am curious as to why the majority of users on this site still do not download blu-ray disks. We asked this question 4 years ago, but although there are now a few more people who actually download them than did then, it is still far less than the number of users who download DVD films. I would like to see if the answers have changed much in the intervening years.

  11.   Russia's Ministry of Culture says it has drafted new legislation to combat the unauthorized recording of movies in cinemas. The development will be greeted with cautious optimism by movie companies in the United States who, over the past several years, have complained about the dozens of video and audio recordings hitting the black market after being recorded in Russian cinemas.

With movie piracy becoming more sophisticated with each passing year and bandwidth cheaper than ever, the quality of copies appearing online has gradually increased.

Pirates are now very comfortable with downloading high-quality multi-gigabyte rips sourced from physical discs and VOD sources but many can’t wait, preferring to view movies early in their theatrical windows. The go-to sources in these cases are so-called ‘cam’ copies, i.e movies obtained by pointing a recording device directly at a cinema screen.

“Illicit camcording is the primary source of unauthorized copies of newly released movies found online,” the Office of the United States Trade Representative wrote in its latest Special 301 Report.

“The recordings made in movie theaters today are very different from those by a single person sitting in a theater with a bulky videotape recorder. The results are not shaky, inaudible recordings. It is now easy for a surreptitious recording in a movie theater to result in a clean digital copy of a movie with perfect audio that can be quickly distributed online.

”  While this may be overstating the quality of the average ‘cam’ recording found online today, the United States views the availability of these copies as a “significant trade problem.” In particular, fingers are regularly pointed at Russia as a primary source of ‘cams’ but, to date, local authorities haven’t been able to prevent dozens appearing online every year. Now, however, Russia seems ready to take action.

According to the TASS news agency, the Ministry of Culture has prepared a new bill that aims to address apparent shortcomings in Russian legislation. Right now, punishment for recording in cinemas is moderated according to intent, meaning that someone who isn’t acting for financial gain can escape prosecution. The government now wishes to tighten up the loopholes to ensure that no one falls through the gaps.

“The Ministry of Culture of Russia has prepared a draft federal law prohibiting the recording of films in cinemas regardless of the purpose of such recordings,” says Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova.  “In other words, to hold the violator accountable it will no longer be necessary to prove that he was shooting specifically for profit.”  Lyubimova says that the changes will support other anti-piracy measures as part of a government strategy to not only introduce new legislation but to also sharpen up laws already in place. Whether fresh anti-camming penalties will reduce the high number of copies appearing online from Russia will remain to be seen but US rightsholders will be hoping for a good set of results.  According to the USTR, 26 illegally camcorded movies were traced back to Russian cinemas in 2015. In 2016, this had jumped to 63 cammed copies and the following year the figure rose again to 78 movies, a 300% increase over the number reported in 2015.  For reasons that aren’t entirely clear, however, the USTR’s latest Special 301 Report noted a significant drop for movies ‘cammed’ in Russia, with ‘just’ 48 titles appearing online in 2018.  The threat from Russia-sourced recordings isn’t just limited to video though. When ‘cammed’ copies appear online it is not uncommon for their components to be sourced from different places, i.e the video could be recorded in one country and the audio in another. According to the USTR, a total of 34 movie audio tracks were traced back to Russian cinemas in 2018.  Traditionally, illicit ‘cam’ copies were blamed for undermining the theatrical market but with the rise of licensed VOD platforms, authorities say that they are being affected too.  “In addition to theater owners who lose revenue, legitimate digital platforms, who often negotiate for a certain period of exclusivity after the theatrical run, cannot fairly compete in the market,” the USTR states.  While Russia is viewed as the primary supplier of first-run movie ‘cams’, other countries receive their share of criticism too. In 2018, Mexico was claimed to be the second-largest foreign source of illegally recorded films, with India and China earning mentions for not doing enough to curtail supply.  Source: Torrentfreak.com

The freeleech stays up, as we said, until the Coronavirus-COVID19 Pandemic will end. In order to stop it,

please, Stay Home and keep everyone safe!

Wait up, the best is yet to come: a new source is set to be implemented over the following weeks. We have noticed some other bugs, so we had to postpone the source upgrade since those bugs are more important at the moment. We keep an eye on your suggestions, even though we don’t always reply. Please understand that we never stop trying to keep this site alive and at a high level, like our community. We value every suggestion, every bug report and for sure every single one of you.  In the end,
