Nvidia's New GeForce RTX 3090 GPU Supports 8K Gaming At 60 FPS

Nvidia has just announced a number of new GPU options, including the GeForce RTX 3090 which among other things, is built for 8K gaming. Over the past few weeks, the company had been teasing the launch of its latest Ampere-based GPUs, although the RTX 3090 still came as a surprise when it was announced.

Nvidia had previously confirmed it would be hosting an event this week, and as to be expected with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was a socially-distant, live-streamed event. During the stream, Nvidia CEO, Jensen Huang, unveiled the latest additions to the company’s GPU lineup with the flagship GeForce RTX 3080 and the more affordable GeForce RTX 3070. However, towards the end of the presentation, Huang then surprisingly unveiled the new and even more powerful GeForce RTX 3090.

When introducing the new RTX 3090, Huang specifically pointed out how this is the ‘world's first 8K Gaming GPU,’ thanks to its ability to support 8K gaming at 60 frames per second. One of the reasons it is able to achieve the higher resolution is through its HDMI 2.1 support which allows for greater signal transmission via a single cable. Along with unveiling the upgraded gaming GPU, Huang confirmed the RTX 3090 is due to become available starting September 24, with the price starting at $1,499.

Undoubtedly, this is going to be the GPU for those wanting the best gaming experience possible. After all, this is a “big ferocious GPU (BFGPU),” according to Nvidia. Besides the 8K resolution support, the RTX 3090 also supports Nvidia’s AI-powered Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) solution to improve frame rates, as well as ray tracing for improved and more realistic lightning and in-game environments. The new BFGPU also comes loaded with 24GB of GDDR6X memory, as well as a dual-axial, flow-through design. Both of which are said to make the RTX 3090 50-percent faster, up to 10 times quieter, and running up to 30 degrees Celsius cooler than the Titan RTX.

Of the three new GPUs announced, the RTX 3080 is considered the flagship option and therefore, the one most buyers are expected to go with. In contrast, the RTX 3070 and its less than $500 price tag is designed for those who want an upgraded GPU, but without having to spend quite as much as the flagship option costs. With its ‘starting at $1500’ price tag, the RTX 3090 is not going to be for everyone. However, for those who do want it, and can afford it, the RTX 3090 GPU looks like it was built for gaming.
