Dread Hunger Reveals New Summit Map, Polar Bears, & New Hunter Character

In unison with the announcement that Dread Hunger is ending its early access, it has also been revealed that at the game's release there will be a major update introducing a new map, a new character to play as, and polar bears. Having entered early access in April 2021, Dread Hunger is entering full release with lots of new content for new and returning players.

Dread Hunger was developed and published by Digital Confectioners, an independent New Zealand-based gaming studio. The developer have also made games Last Tide and Depth, and it created two Search and Destroy maps for Fortnite's Love and War event. Dread Hunger is not a battle royale game, but it is an online game where the goal is to survive. In the game, 8 explorers are stuck in the 19th century Arctic and must rely on each other to survive. However, 2 of the explorers are not what they seem and are actually "Thralls" determined to sabotage the expedition and kill the crew. Players must either determine who the Thralls are before it's too late or, on the other side, sabotage the expedition/kill the crew before they are discovered. If this sounds familiar, it may be because it was inspired by the extremely extremely popular Among Us.

A glimpse of what will be included in the final release of Dread Hunger is shown in a trailer for the coinciding update, The Great Hunt. The new content will add new map The Summit, new bow-wielding character The Hunter, and a new enemy they must face in the wilderness, a polar bear. These three pillars of content are bound to bring back old players and wow new ones, as their combined breadth will add several hitches to the game's existing sandbox of locations, characters, and hostile fauna.

A big aspect of the game is roleplaying the character the player chooses for the game, and the in-game voice chat and actions make it all that more seamless. In fact, this is one of the aspects the devs have loved seeing grow through the early access of the game. Rather than just pick a color like in Among Us, players can choose to play as the Captain, Navigator, Engineer, Cook, Doctor, Chaplain, Royal Marine, or Hunter, each of which have their own weapon and passive ability. This gives players more reason to connect to their character and gives playstyle flexibility in a game genre where the play tends to be straightforward.

With social deduction games very popular at the moment, both as a game amongst friends and as a streaming game, it is a good time for Dread Hunger to come out of early access. The differences in characters, from their roles to their playstyles, is very appealing, especially in a market where roleplaying in social deduction games is just beginning to really take off. Digital Confectionaries picked fan-favorite aspects from a well-known game and put it into a new environment with features, but there's no telling how it will compete with Among Us in terms of player counts and stream views now that it's in full release.
