The retro title Chip's Challenge is being released for SNES and Sega consoles after 30 years in limbo. The game was originally released in 1989 for the Atari Lynx. Ports for other systems, such as the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS, were also released in the next decade. Given the game's success on these platforms, it seemed as if a console version was inevitable. However, it never came to pass.

The Retro Room Games has announced three console ports of Chip's Challenge, now available for preorder. The game will be made for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the Sega Genesis, and the Sega MegaDrive. NTSC and PAL versions of the SNES edition are available. Aside from the 148 levels of puzzles, these console ports will add the ability to skip levels. Two versions are listed: the cartridge only or the complete set, which comes with a box and instruction booklet. They are priced at $24.99 and $49.99 US, respectively.

Chip's Challenge was also released to Steam for free in 2015, with the sequel coming along shortly after. This edition has also garnered positive reviews and proves that the classic title still has a place in modern gaming. These console ports will require the player to own a functioning console, either official or otherwise. This does mean the Steam version is technically more accessible to a modern audience. That isn't going to stop classic gaming fans, however. It's been a long time coming for Chip to make his way to home consoles. Thanks to The Retro Room Games, that day is closer than ever.
