It seems that Adam Sandler and the rest of Happy Gilmore's cast could have starred in a fighting game for the original Xbox, but the pitch by developer Digital Eclipse wasn’t greenlit. Digital Eclipse is a classic game developer with a sizeable library of creations and re-releases dating back to 1994. During the company’s prime, Digital Eclipse developers pitched a Happy Gilmore fighting game for the Xbox, which would have seen Adam Sandler don his button-down and beat up enemies with his signature golf club.

Digital Eclipse is an early 2000s gaming company that pioneered accurate video game re-releases, emulating classic arcade games for households before emulating was cool. The developer have worked on games for over 25 years, and it's had plenty of trials and tribulations over its long history. What makes Digital Eclipse special is its Eclipse engine, which ports games so it will run anywhere the engine does. This system allows even classic games to find new homes on updated systems, as long as the Eclipse engine is available on a given platform. Interestingly, Digital Eclipse was recently revived, bringing a lot of older information to light once again.

According to Mike Mika, Digital Eclipse studio head, the company was once looking to make a Happy Gilmore video game at one point. In collaboration with the "Happy Madison crew," Digital Eclipse was planning for the project to be a hybrid fighting and golf game with characters from the classic comedy film. Instead, it was turned down (likely by publishers), but Mika insists to this day that it “should have been greenlit because it was a great idea.”

A Happy Gilmore fighting game would have been epic, especially if Adam Sandler and company would have allowed their digital likenesses to be used. A digital Happy would have likely been hilarious, and it's not hard to imagine Adam Sandler smashing his golf club into the rest of Happy Gilmore's star-studded cast. It’s unclear how the game would have run, but its release on the original Xbox could have been a rare example of a movie game adaptation done right had it been greenlit. In all likelihood, though, perhaps its best that Happy Gilmore stayed on the silver screen in the end.

In the early 2000s, movie tie-in games weren’t notoriously poor in quality (normally due to being rushed), and older gamers still shudder at some of history’s worst examples, such as the E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial game from 1982 and the Back To The Future game from 1989. In modern gaming, movie games' quality have improved, but they have fallen out of favor at most AAA publishers. Regardless of how a Happy Gilmore video game with hybrid fighting and golf action would have been received on Xbox, its very conceptual existence is a novel piece of gaming history.
