World champions the United States were held to a goalless draw by Australia in their final group game in the women's football tournament at Tokyo 2020.

They finished runners-up in Group G after Sweden beat New Zealand 2-0 to claim top spot with three wins.

The USA and Sweden are through to the quarter-finals, while Australia could progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Team GB topped Group E after a 1-1 draw with Canada.

The USA came into the tournament unbeaten in 44 games before losing their opener to Sweden in stunning fashion.

They responded with a 6-1 win over New Zealand, but struggled to break down Australia as Alex Morgan had a goal disallowed for offside, while Matildas forward Mary Fowler hit the crossbar.

In contrast, Sweden have been in fine form, and ensured they topped the group with goals from Anna Anvegard and Madelen Janogy in the first half against New Zealand.

Elsewhere, Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema maintained her incredible form in Tokyo, picking up her seventh and eighth goals to help the Netherlands thrash China 8-2.

Her tally so far is a new record at a single Games, overtaking the previous mark set by Canada's Christine Sinclair, who netted six at London 2012.

Hosts Japan beat Chile 1-0 to finish third in Group E, after Team GB equalised late on to draw with Canada, who were runners-up. Brazil beat Zambia 1-0 in the final match of the day.
