James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is better than David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad, according to actor Joel Kinnaman. Kinnaman stars in both versions of the supervillain story as Rick Flag, along with some familiar faces and new characters — some who never even appeared in the original Suicide Squad comics. And Gunn's rated-R version is already receiving rave reviews as the director was given a lot of freedom from the DC and Warner Bros. heads.

Suicide Squad 2 will be a standalone film rather than a sequel, gearing up to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6. Task Force X is set to reunite, with Kinnaman, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang reprising their roles. They're joined by newcomers like John Cena's Peacemaker and Idris Elba's Bloodspot, including misfit villains such as King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) and Weasel (Sean Gunn). Task Force X will be taking on the freakish antagonist Starro the Conqueror, with Gunn warning fans that many of their favorites will not make it out of the film alive.

Kinnaman recently spoke to Yahoo! Entertainment to discuss the differences between Gunn and Ayer's films, making it clear he's much happier with the current version. However, he didn't do so to bash Ayer. Rather, he was commenting on the way Gunn was able to bring his vision to life, without an overbearing amount of studio interference. Namely, he said that Ayer's set out to create a dark, emotional, and nihilistic film, but the studio was looking for something more entertaining. In his experience, there were conflicting visions for the 2016 Suicide Squad that pulled the film in different directions. Read what Kinnaman said below:

"In this film, they trusted who James is, everyone has confidence in his vision. It was a joy to shoot the film and what you see is very much the script, but then I was surprised [because] it just seemed there were more layers to it than I had expected. I didn't see [in the script] the emotional depths that I felt were very unpretentiously woven into the film. Obviously, I'm hugely biased here, but I felt that that made the film transcend the genre, and the big spectacle of it, and made something that was a real work of art as well."

Kinnaman added that with 2016's Suicide Squad, the first trailer "worked against" filmmakers because it was so successful, but wasn't a full representation of the film itself. He believes that filmmakers almost tried to reshape the movie to be more like the trailer, causing a clear disconnect. Based on Gunn's experience with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, it's obvious Warner Bros. trusted him to make the Suicide Squad film that would satisfy fans and critics alike, particularly considering his unique filmmaking style.

Additionally, Warner Bros. and DC were so confident in Gunn's Suicide Squad interpretation that they greenlit a Peacemaker series for HBO Max long before Cena's character was even introduced to fans. Ahead of the premiere, The Suicide Squad already has a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, showcasing that viewers are seemingly agreeing with Kinnaman's assessment of the new film.
