The first official trailer for teen rom-com He’s All That has arrived, revealing that two stars from the original film are returning. She’s All That was first released in 1999 and found instant success, going on to gross over $100 million on a $10 million budget. As one of the last 1990s era teen rom-coms to make an impact, it has come as somewhat of a surprise that the film hasn’t been re-imagined sooner for a new generation of viewers.

The original film saw popular high school jock Zack (Freddie Prinze Jr.) place a bet with his equally vain buddies that he could transform any girl at school into a prom queen. The quiet and reserved Laney Boggs (Rachel Leigh Cook) is chosen as the challenge, but the more time that Zack ends up spending with Laney, the deeper he falls in love with her. Ultimately, Laney learns the truth about why Zack became so interested in her in the first place and is devastated. What began as a stupid and insensitive bet to prove Zack’s popularity ends up becoming a teen romance that left audiences of the time giddy over the fairy-tale feel good ending. As the rom-com continues to make a comeback after its '90s heyday, the latest teen take on the genre is He’s All That, a reboot of the first film’s concept for the 21st century.

The first official trailer for He’s All That has now arrived courtesy of the official Netflix YouTube channel, with the film set to be released on August 27. There’s not much in this updated version for fans who were hoping to see some connection to the 1999 film, but at least two stars of the original are back for He’s All That. Rachel Leigh Cook appears to be playing Padgett Sawyer’s (played by Addison Rae) mother and Matthew Lillard, who played ridiculous wannabe star Brock Hudson, is very briefly seen dancing in the trailer. Check it out below:

The new film follows a similar yet updated premise as the original film, with the main difference being that this time the gender roles are switched up, as Padgett takes a bet that she can turn any boy at school into the next prom king. With regards to Cook, seeing as the end of She’s All That saw her get together with Prinze Jr’s character, it makes sense to believe Padgett could be their daughter. However, Prinze Jr. is not listed in the credits of the new film, meaning that his presence in He’s All That could just be through verbal reference. And then there’s Lillard, whose Brock character was little more than comic relief. Judging by the trailer, his inclusion in the film could simply be down to a quick cameo.

Those who felt that the premise behind She’s All That was sexist and cruel won’t see He’s All That make amends. The film still seems to hang on to the vain and self-absorbed qualities that saw its characters treat someone like an object the first time around. While the ending will undoubtedly prove that love triumphs in the end, it would have been nice to see this updated version of the original do a little more to really put a new twist on the material.
