The Suicide Squad's Post-Credits Scene Was Shot During Peacemaker Show

The Suicide Squad director James Gunn reveals that the film's post-credits scene was a late addition to the final edit, shot during the production of his upcoming HBO Max original series, Peacemaker. Following the backlash leveled at DC's first Suicide Squad film in 2016 (directed by David Ayer), the studio opted to adopt a "soft-reboot" approach with their subsequent installment into the franchise, which released earlier this month. Some characters made the transition between productions, though as a whole, the two are considered distinctly separate entities. Despite receiving overwhelming critical and popular praise, Gunn's The Suicide Squad has been a financial disappointment for Warner Bros.

Fortunately, prior to the film's release, the studio greenlighted a Peacemaker (John Cena) centric spinoff show set in Gunn's world, with the director returning to write and direct. Gunn began work on the project around the time that production for The Suicide Squad was coming to an end. Because of the quick turnaround time between the two projects, it seems that the show was able to influence a key revelation during the film's post-credit stinger, where it is revealed the Peacemaker survived his duel with Bloodsport (Idris Elba). The show itself is set to follow Peacemaker after the events of the film, and will supposedly explore the character's backstory and origins.

In a recent interview with Collider, Gunn said that the post-credits scene "got added because the TV show" rather than the scene influencing the TV show. The director went on to reveal that he filmed the post-credits scene with Cena after he started shooting Peacemaker. Check out Gunn's full statements below:

It got added because the TV show. I didn't say I was going to do the TV show until after the movie was basically finished being cut. Then I got asked to do the TV show, and then I said I would do it. Then when we started shooting the TV show, I shot the post-credit scene.

Given Gunn's fondness of post-credits sequences, it's highly likely that there was another post-credits stinger in place of the Peacemaker scene prior to Gunn signing on for the spinoff series. It's possible that the scene of Weasel (Sean Gunn) waking up on the beach, which is placed just before the credits roll in the final cut, was the original post-credits scene. However, the director has yet to address this possibility.

Regardless, it's fascinating to learn how late into production the post-credit sequence was added. Gunn's comments show just how volatile blockbuster productions can be, even with tentpole films as large as The Suicide Squad. Although the studio has been heavily criticized for meddling with their own productions in the past, it's possible that Warner Bros. has finally learned from their past missteps. Hopefully these lessons will carry through to Peacemaker, which is set to release in January of next year.
