Free Guy Blu-ray Release Date & Special Features Revealed

The digital, Blu-ray and 4K release date for the action-comedy hit, Free Guy, has been revealed. Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie-within-a-video-game smash starring Ryan Reynolds is currently leading the box office and continues to win praise from audiences everywhere. After the opening weekend success, Disney quickly greenlit a sequel to the long-delayed film, making it a surefire hit at a time when theatrical box office has been tenuous.

Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as "Guy," an NPC (Non-Playable Character) in a video game, who suddenly becomes self-aware and starts to make changes to his digital life. The film co-stars Taika Waititi, Jodi Comer, and Lil Rel Howery, as well as a bevy of surprise guest stars. Free Guy was originally slated to release in 2020, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it suffered the release-date shuffle that has hit most big-name releases ever since.

Now, audiences can prepare to welcome Free Guy home with the film hitting digital streaming platforms on September 28th, 2021 and the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD hitting shelves on October 12th, 2021. Fans of the film will be getting a disc full of features, including deleted/extended scenes, a gag reel, and a number of behind-the-scenes featurettes that explore the film deeper. For those who aren't as concerned with physical media, the digital early release is a good option, making the wait just over a month before Free Guy can be enjoyed at home. It was long speculated that Free Guy could potentially debut on Disney Premier Access, but since it was originally a 20th Century Fox film prior to the merger of Disney/Fox, it was under different contractual regulations that prohibited it. Since Covid-19 hit, the box office window has shrunk significantly for features, with most theatrical windows capping at 45 days before heading to home video, and Free Guy seems to be very close to that, after releasing on August 13th. Free Guy will also find its way to Disney+ at some point, although nothing has been officially confirmed as to when that would be.

Free Guy is one of the last holdovers of the Fox/Disney merger, which began as 20th Century Fox productions before being acquired. Steven Spielberg's West Side Story and Ridley Scott's The Last Duel are two more films that will fall under different agreements that will inhibit a simple transition to Disney+ after the theatrical window is over. With such a fluid theatrical environment, it's kind of a miracle that Free Guy has done so well, and it's been a good test of what audiences will turn up for at the box office during a pandemic. With Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings set to debut in theaters only on September 3rd, it will be interesting to see how a Marvel film performs without Premier Access, especially given the recent controversy of Black Widow's shaky debut.
