Lashana Lynch, who played Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel, has recently discussed whether she would return to the role in a future MCU project. Lynch's character was first seen in the 2019 superhero film. This was before the pilot and SWORD founder was mentioned during WandaVision.

Maria Rambeau was introduced as Carol Danvers' best friend during the hero's first solo film when a brainwashed Carol sought her out to find out about her past and connection to Dr. Miranda Lawson. The hero regained her memories shortly after reuniting with Maria and her young daughter, Monica, before Rambeau joined Danvers, Nick Fury, and Talos in rescuing the refugee Skrulls from Yon Rogg and the Kree. While Maria has yet to return in the MCU, Lashana Lynch is set to star in No Time To Die, the latest in the James Bond franchise that recently had its world premiere confirmed for September, but that hasn't stopped speculation on whether Maria could return in some form to the MCU.

In an interview with RadioTimes discussing her upcoming role in the long-awaited James Bond film, Lynch responded to a question about whether she could return to the MCU in the future. The star stated she's unaware of any possible return right now, but would love to return to the franchise following her time on Captain Marvel. Read Lynch's full quote below:

“You’ll have to ask [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige that. In fact, I should ask Kevin Feige that. But you never know. Weirder things have happened in the franchise. I had a wonderful time on the first one and it would be great to have a wonderful time on another one."

Maria has been absent following Captain Marvel. She was mentioned in WandaVision by her daughter Monica, as portrayed by Teyonnah Parris, who recently revealed her excitement over character team-ups in The Marvels. Following her adventure into space with Carol, Maria established SWORD, the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Division that were seen securing Westview during the Disney+ series. It was later revealed during a scene where Monica returned after being snapped by Thanos during Avengers: Endgame that Maria had passed away at some point in the five-year period between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

More recent series and developments have opened the storytelling potential of the MCU into new territories. Series such as Loki introduced the multiverse and Marvel's What If...? has seen many characters revisited, such as episode three featuring the surprise return of Betty Ross. With the universe now offering seemingly limitless possibilities for returning characters to appear in future projects, a return for Lashana Lynch as Captain Marvel's most trusted friend in some form beyond flashbacks is well within the realms of possibility.
