Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings earned the same Cinemascore as the first Iron Man back in 2008. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has finally opened in theaters for a 45-day exclusive theatrical run and has earned rave reviews from critics. While early tracking had the film set to open between $30 to $50 million, weekend estimates have gone up as audiences' excitement for the next new Marvel hero has risen.

Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe started out with many established characters like Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and Black Widow getting their stories expanded, but Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the first new hero. The film has a lot of similarities to the first film in the MCU, Iron Man. Both films are based on smaller Marvel superheroes and feature the villainous Ten Rings, and have a lot of expectations thrust upon them as Iron Man was the true start of the cinematic universe while Shang-Chi's box-office will determine if Marvel Studios delays Eternals. Now, just like Iron Man, it appears Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a hit with audiences.

According to CinemaScore, the opening night audience gave Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings an A letter score rating. This is the same letter grade that Iron Man received back in 2008. This puts it above Black Widow which recently received an A- CinemaScore grade earlier this year.

This is not out of the norm for Marvel Studios, as most of the films have received an A CinemaScore with a few exceptions. The Avengers, Black Panther, and Avengers: Endgame all received A+ scores from audiences. Five films have received an A- (Black Widow, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Incredible Hulk) and only one film has earned below an A letter grade, which was the first Thor in 2011 with a B+.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings A CinemaScore bodes very well for the film's box office. This means audiences were happy with the finished film and will contribute to the film's already extremely positive reaction. Similar to Iron Man in 2008, Shang-Chi is opening at the beginning of the month with no major competition for a couple of weeks and could easily dominate the next few weeks at the box office. The audience's reaction to the hero Shang-Chi could suggest that the character could become as major a fixture in the MCU moving forward as Tony Stark was following Iron Man. Much like Iron Man, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has captivated audiences with an exciting tale and a bold new Marvel hero.
