Rod Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, says that he isn’t sure about Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie idea. The legendary franchise has gone through many changes and iterations in its 55-year existence, and one of the most recent sources for much talk and conjecture among fans and Hollywood alike has been the inclusion of Tarantino. As a self-professed diehard Star Trek fan himself, Tarantino seems an enticing option for the franchise.

It all began several years ago when news broke that the Pulp Fiction filmmaker had pitched his own take on a new Star Trek film. The idea, which involved a spin on an actual episode from the original Star Trek series, would have seen Tarantino mix 1930’s era gangsterism with Star Trek lore in order to come up with something that had never been seen before throughout the IP’s extensive history. Tarantino even formed a partnership with screenwriter Mark Smith, whose previous work on the Oscar-winning The Revenant was ample proof that together, the two creatives could certainly deliver something worthwhile. But as time passed, Tarantino did what Tarantino so often ends up doing and shifted his attention to another project, the critically acclaimed Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood.

As hopes for Tarantino’s Star Trek film appear to have dwindled among fans of both the filmmaker and the franchise, the son of Star Trek creator and CEO of Roddenberry Entertainment, Rod Roddenberry, has revealed that he isn’t quite so sure about Tarantino’s idea for a new film in the sci-fi franchise. Speaking with Forbes, Rodenberry had this to say about the idea of one of the world’s most acclaimed filmmakers taking on the Star Trek brand:

“I struggle with that because the way I’m pretty myopic with the way I see Star Trek. I mentioned that I grew up with fans coming up to me out saying how Star Trek inspired them and gave them hope for the future. It’s the optimism and the messaging in there that make Star Trek what it was. I truly believe that. If you create a Star Trek, that is just action; that is not Star Trek, in my opinion. That’s what makes it different than Star Wars, and I love Star Wars, but they can both coexist. And I love Tarantino’s work and the kind of films that he does. I am trying to have an open mind.”

“I would be curious to read a script on his take. I do not think you could say we’re going to do a Reservoir Dogs Star Trek. I’ll be honest, that doesn’t work for me, but he is a fan, and I think as a fan, he probably understands to some degree that Star Trek has to have some of this messaging. I would be curious, and I would try to have an open mind, but I’m not sure what it would be. I am glad that people are willing to explore that at least.”

It seems that in the case of Tarantino, his reputation often precedes him in ways that aren’t always helpful. One of the biggest reasons why so many Star Trek fans have vocalized support for a Tarantino Star Trek film is because they’re well aware of what a huge fan he is of the franchise. But at the same time, the closest thing to a film with genuine heart that Tarantino has made to date was the aforementioned Once Upon a Time. This isn’t to say that his past work has been lacking, only that Star Trek carries with it an unabashed sincerity that isn’t typically found in films like Kill Bill or even Django Unchained.

Because of this, Roddenberry is justified in being more than a little uncertain about the idea of Tarantino gifting the world a new Star Trek film. At this point, it’s unlikely Tarantino will actually direct a new installment in the franchise, but as of this writing, he is still on board to produce a new Star Trek. Whether this ends up being from a script that he had a major hand in writing remains to be seen.
