The Saints Row reboot announced only weeks ago is taking some radical departures from its predecessors, with one of the biggest being the new Saints Row characters. With new characters comes new customization, and the reboot appears to be very in-depth with such features.

Rather than being a part of the hardened and pre-established 3rd Street Saints, players will build up a criminal organization of characters just beginning their paths to infamy in the next Saints Row game. The player will join three other characters to gain control of the Santo Ileso area.

A post on the official Saints Row website claims that the reboot will have the biggest character customization suite yet, with eight voices in total and the return of layered clothing. Layered clothing is a returning feature from previous Saints Row entries that will allow players to have more control over character customization. In addition to the characters, however, Saints Row will also feature vehicle editing, with the post vaguely claiming "a HUGE array of customization options." The post keeps the finer details vague, but the information included shows a commitment to letting players represent themselves.

Saints Row has had in-depth character customization since the second game, and the reboot supposedly seeks to expand Saints Row's character creator options significantly while also bringing back some fan favorite features. The post specifically calls out players who noticed layered clothing shown off before this announcement. The setting also receives a special section, describing Santo Ileso as a huge fictional city in the American Southwest.

Character customization can be important in games like Saints Row. Many players of open-ended games enjoy creating their own characters to play as instead of being forced to go by a specific canon. Customization is such a popular feature that players have exploited bugs for some extra customization options in similar games like GTA. Saints Row is also a series known for its character creator, so it is only natural to see such a feature returning. The announcement is vague, so evidently the developers at Volition do not wish to reveal what options will be available just yet. Either way, it should prove promising for any concerned fans.

In Saints Row 2, a recurring joke is made of the character customization; in the first game players used a preset character, so naturally in its sequel many players most likely changed the character to look nothing like the original. The classic "did you do something with your hair?" joke will sadly probably not return in the radically different Saints Row reboot, however, since the cast is entirely original and unrelated to the original series. On the bright side, customization should still be in depth.

Saints Row will launch on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 25, 2022.
