Diablo 2: Resurrected Has Cross Progression

Diablo 2: Resurrected, the remade version of the classic ARPG, is quickly approaching its September 23 release date. Despite that, a lot of information about Diablo 2: Resurrected seems to have passed over a lot of potential players' heads. For example, one potential Diablo 2: Resurrected player took to Twitter to ask Blizzard's executive producer Rod Fergusson about cross-progression. Fergusson was happy to reconfirm that, yes, Diablo 2: Resurrected has cross-console progression.

With Diablo 2: Resurrected's release date so near, fans looking forward to the game are beginning to get a little aggressive with their curiosity. Fergusson made a post on Twitter about his family, only to have his responses flooded with questions about the game. To Fergusson's credit, he decided to be accommodating and answer a handful of questions. One of those questions was with regards to the Nintendo Switch version of Diablo 2: Resurrected supporting cross-progression, which it does.

Cross-progression, for those unfamiliar, is a feature that allows players to carry their account, characters, items, and all forms of progression across multiple platforms. For Diablo 2: Resurrected, that includes the PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It's a very modern feature and clearly not something a 20-year-old PC exclusive would offer. Vicarious Visions is adding it to Diablo 2: Resurrected, one of several new features added aim to improve the game but otherwise do not alter the gameplay in any significant way.

Oddly enough, while the game will support cross-progression, Diablo 2: Resurrected will not support cross-play at launch. Blizzard said that it had looked at cross-play, and is continuing to look at, but decided it's not something it wants to support on release. The reason cited is that the different platforms have different interfaces and controls, so it wasn't "the right fit." Some speculate that Activision's relationship with PlayStation, which has historically been hostile towards cross-play, may have led to Blizzard deciding not to include the feature.

This isn't the first time that Blizzard has confirmed cross-progression support for Diablo 2: Resurrected across all of the game's platforms. The feature was confirmed as early as February. As noted, the nearness of release and confusion regarding the difference between cross-play and cross-progression have led some to want clarification.

Fergusson also has a bit of extra news for Diablo fans that he shared on Twitter. After one fan asks Fergusson if he has any news to shared regarding any upcoming Diablo 2: Resurrected beta. Fergusson says Blizzard will have news to share next week.
