The Suicide Squad releases a gag reel showing all the zany bloopers and deleted moments that didn’t make the finished film. James Gunn’s Suicide Squad follow-up delivered all the craziness and violence fans were hoping for and more, but the film nevertheless disappointed at the summer 2021 box office.

Maybe it was the reality of the COVID era or maybe it was the film’s day-and-date release on HBO Max, but something kept audiences away when The Suicide Squad arrived back in August. Critics however were on-board with Gunn’s take on the DCEU anti-hero team as the film holds a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score. Though not enough people saw the film to make Warner Bros. happy, those who did see it were very satisfied, as the movie also scored 82% with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Indeed The Suicide Squad feels like one of those movies whose reputation will only grow as the years go on. A big part of the film’s potentially cultish appeal is of course its wild sense of humor, provided by writer-director Gunn and his appealing cast. As funny as the movie was though, many of the most hilarious moments that were shot didn't make it into the finished film. Those moments have now been shared via a gag reel filled with outtakes, cut scenes and other random insanity. See the clip in the space below (via Warner Bros. Entertainment):

Far-and-away the most memorable moment of the gag reel is a VFX-free shot of Sean Gunn as Weasel showing that he did indeed lick that glass for real. The reel also provides a pre-VFX shot of Steve Agee as King Shark showing him struggling with the bizarre rig he had to wear in playing the monstrous, ever hungry Nanaue. In another funny moment, Polka Dot Man actor David Dastmalchian suffers a painful mishap as Bloodsport actor Idris Elba tries to throw him something and hits him squarely in the junk. But Elba isn’t immune from mishap either as he later falls down trying to navigate a pile of rubble. Even with all those highlights, probably the star of the reel is Flula Borg as Javelin, as in one scene he makes Margot Robbie break up and in another he basically takes over directing from Gunn. Indeed, Borg’s performance in the outtakes may make fans wish he hadn’t died in the movie and was ready for a Javelin spinoff.

Like most gag reels the Suicide Squad clip shows how much fun cast and crew really have when they’re making a movie. In the case of this film, much of the good humor and chemistry displayed behind-the-scenes made its way into the work that audiences finally saw. And that spirit is indeed why The Suicide Squad played so well for those who did go and see it.
