Actress Angela Bassett gives an update on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever after co-star Letitia Wright suffered an on-set injury. Bassett plays Black Panther's mother, Ramonda, as well as the mother of Letitia Wright's character, Shuri. Bassett first appeared in the 2018 film and is returning for the sequel, along with Wright, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Daniel Kaluuya as W'Kabi, Lupita Nyong'o as Nakia, Winston Duke as M'Baku, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. The sequel has Ryan Coogler back in the director's chair, along with Joe Robert Cole as co-writer.

Lead actor, Chadwick Boseman, sadly passed away after a private battle with cancer last year, so it's expected that the sequel will address his legacy and carry on the Black Panther name in a new capacity, although it's unclear what that will look like (Marvel has confirmed that Boseman's T'Challa won't be recast). The sequel is also set to introduce Riri Williams, AKA Ironheart, as played by Dominique Thorne. In the comics, Ironheart is the protege of Tony Stark, who creates her own suit of armor to become a superhero similar to Iron Man, eventually carrying the torch for him when he falls into a coma.

Filming on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been going on for a while now, and last month, co-star Letitia Wright sustained an injury on set in Boston. However, Bassett now says that Wright is "fine and ready to go" after the injury, while talking to ET, noting her petite size and how some of these stunts can shake people up. In addition, Bassett talked about her feelings on returning to the franchise after the loss of Boseman, saying that she felt better about the film after reading the script. Read Bassett's update on Wright below:

"She had a little bit of a fall, but it's not too bad...You know, anything like that will shake you up, but she's just a little, slight, little petite thing. But she is fine and ready to go."

Bassett went on to praise the sequel and talked about their excitement in making it, saying, "We're excited about that. Of course, we still have a little, you know, we feel some kind of way in our heart, of course. So every day is just a testament and a love fest for our dear [Chadwick Boseman]." Bassett recently appeared in the latest installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, as well as recurring roles in Bojack Horseman and American Horror Story. The seasoned actress also appears on Fox's first-responder series 9-1-1 and got in on some action with the Netflix action film, Gunpowder Milkshake with Karen Gillan.

The tragic loss of Chadwick Boseman will no doubt be addressed in some capacity with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but Marvel has been tight-lipped about how that would happen. Possibilities include making Shuri the new Black Panther, a development that transpired in the comics, or elevating any of the other characters within T'Challa's circle to the position, from Okoye to Nakia to M'Baku and beyond. While the possibilities are varied, it does seem like the filmmakers will also be making a love letter to their original star, which will no doubt feature prominently in the film and carry on his legacy with respect. Audiences will find out for sure when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever releases on July 8th, 2022.
