The mother of filmmaker, actor, and comedian Seth Rogen appears to be a little confused over her son’s recent casting as Donkey Kong in Nintendo’s upcoming Mario. The Super Mario Bros. IP has long been adapted into various mediums, typically with great success. However, when it comes to cinema, the famed Italian duo of Mario and Luigi has faltered outside of Japan. That being said, the last time that a Super Mario Bros. feature arrived was 1993’s live-action effort, a film that is widely acknowledged as one of the worst box-office disasters.

With its announcement of an animated take on Super Mario Bros., Nintendo gave fans of the long-running franchise yet another reason for excitement. This past March, the Super Nintendo World theme park officially opened in Osaka, Japan, bringing elements of the Super Mario Bros. world to life. While the Covid-19 pandemic has kept visitors to the new park somewhat limited, cinemas are once again showing signs of life. As a result, the arrival of Mario next year is arguably the next best thing to a trip to Super Nintendo World. Yet all talk of excitement aside, news of Nintendo’s animated feature and its release date also revealed the film’s cast. There’s currently much debate over Chris Pratt being cast as the voice of Mario, but other casting choices, such as Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, seem apt.

But not everyone is charmed by the idea of Rogen voicing gaming’s most famous primate. As per a recent tweet from Sandy Rogen, she’s not quite sure how to process her son being Donkey Kong. “My son is donkey Kong! Don’t really know what to say about that,” read the tweet, leaving some to wonder if she was displeased or just genuinely confused by the whole thing. Fans were quick to assure her that it was indeed a great thing, though some comments that reference the famed franchise might only serve to further confuse her:

Despite typically being associated among the cast of characters seen in the Mario Bros. universe, Donkey Kong and Mario have a more in-depth relationship. The first game in what would become a series of Donkey Kong games arrived in 1981, marking the very first appearance of Mario. Back then, he was simply known as Jumpman. In the years since that first meeting, Mario has obviously transformed into something much more than what his Jumpman years suggested, as has Donkey Kong. Together the two characters represent some of the greatest achievements in Nintendo’s lengthy history. What’s more, the characters have come to be a major part of people’s lives, hence the current pushback concerning Pratt being cast as the voice of Mario.

Regardless of where one stands on the casting of Pratt as Mario, the casting of Rogen as Donkey Kong seems spot on. With the exception of being cast as Rowlf the piano-playing dog in an animated adaptation of The Muppets, it’s hard to imagine a role more perfectly suited to Rogen’s unique voice. Exactly what fans have in store for them with regard to the release of Mario is hard to say, but Rogen’s mother can rest easy knowing that her son has landed an ideal role.
