The upcoming fifth installment in the Scream horror franchise has launched a Woodsboro Horror Film Club promotion for fans. The new film is a considerable mystery to fans, with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett keen to not only honor the late Wes Craven as well as the franchise itself but also to keep things quiet with as few spoilers as possible. So far, that approach is working, as the plot of the film isn't even known.

With a little less than four months to go before Scream's release, there's still no sign of a trailer, either. This is likely due to what Gillett has previously said is the ease with which Scream can be spoiled. There's plenty of significant changes on their way for fans of the slasher franchise, with some even suggesting that this will be the film that steps away from the series' past and somewhat reboots the entire concept. Past information on the production has assured fans that this isn't a reboot, but how Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett plan to strike a balance between past and present is something that every Scream fan wants to know. For now, that information is impossible to come by, but perhaps Paramount's latest promotional tactic will slowly but surely begin to fill in some of the blanks.

As per Hello Sidney, Scream fans are now being encouraged to join the Woodsboro Horror Film Club. The specifics of the club currently remain unknown. Still, the new club, which operates on Facebook, is expected to deliver up-to-date information on the latest Scream film while providing additional franchise insight and trivia to fans. Whether or not the new film club is also a hint of something that could be part of the new film remains unknown.

In 2011, Scream 4 introduced a film club run by high school students mainly focused on the fictional Stab movies. Unfortunately, the club's core members became victims of the Ghostface killer, with one member, in particular, revealed to be part of the Ghostface plot for revenge. If Paramount's Woodsboro Horror Film Club is more than just a clever way to bring Scream fans together, it's hard to say how it could be incorporated into the new film. Naturally, a significant part of the franchise has been how cinema intertwines with everyone and everything from the killer(s) to the victims to the plots themselves. But having already used the concept of a film club in Scream 4, there doesn't seem to be a credible reason for bringing it back in the sequel.

However, what is clear at this point is that the degree of secrecy that has followed Scream around since it was first announced will require a substantial payoff. It's great to keep things under wraps for as long as possible so that fans have something to genuinely be surprised about, but at the same time, those surprises need to be worthwhile. Hopefully, the Woodsboro Horror Club proves to be an excellent place for fans to gain further insight into Scream while celebrating one of the most popular and long-running slasher franchises.
