Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel in Disney's upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, gave fans a peek at her princess performance as she sang a classic The Lion King song. The 21-year-old singer/actress's rise to fame started when she and her older sister Chloe posted their covers of Beyonce's hits as teenagers. Since their humble beginnings on Youtube, the duo gained a large following in the R&B genre and even earned a total of five Grammy Award nominations. Bailey also stars in the sitcom series Grown-ish.

The Little Mermaid marks Bailey's major big-screen debut. The upcoming film, which is set to hit theaters in 2023, is a live-action remake of the 1989 animated movie. Rob Marshall helms the project with longtime Disney collaborator Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda on board to provide the musical score. Bailey stars alongside veteran actors Javier Bardem as King Triton and Melissa McCarthy as the villain Ursula. Completing the cast are Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.

Bailey proved that she's every inch a Disney princess as she performed at Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary Special (via CxHNow) last Friday. The young actress gave a stirring rendition of The Lion King anthem, 'Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" Wearing a gorgeous ballgown, Bailey sparkled as she sang in front of the Magic Kingdom castle with a live orchestra and an amazing fireworks display. After her breathtaking performance, Bailey took to social media to immortalize the surreal moment. "Had the best time singing tonight," she wrote on her Instagram caption.

The Little Mermaid wrapped up production in Sardinia, Italy last July. Bailey marked the occasion by sharing a first look image of herself as Princess Ariel. While there have also been leaked set photos of the actress dressed in some of Ariel's most memorable looks, fans have been waiting to find out how she will fully transform as the beloved character.

Interestingly, Bailey's casting as the new Ariel initially received mixed reactions. While some praised Disney's bold move to choose a woman of color for the role, others thought it was a drastic departure from the original animated movie. Bailey's amazing performance last Friday serves as a sneak peek of what fans can expect when she officially debuts her version of Ariel. Through the short song number, which barely lasted four minutes, Bailey showed her wonderful vocal ability and exuded charm like a true Disney princess. The Little Mermaid is still two years away and Bailey will surely have more Disney-related events to prove that she's perfect for the role.
