Halloween Kills director David Gordon Green joked about bringing back Busta Rhymes’ Halloween: Resurrection character for a new film. Halloween Kills will be Green’s second Halloween film, following his work on the recent 2018 reboot. The latest installment in the long-running slasher series will debut in theaters and on Peacock later this month.

The Halloween franchise has broken off into numerous timelines since its inception in 1978. One such timeline was the H20 timeline, which seemingly concluded with the release of Halloween: Resurrection in 2002. In that film, Michael Myers returns to his childhood home to stalk a group of college students who have agreed to spend Halloween night in the house for a show hosted by Busta Rhymes’ Freddie Harris. Michael kills his victims one by one, leading to a showdown in which Harris unleashes martial arts skills to defeat Michael and trap him in the burning home. Harris manages to rescue the film’s final girl Sara Moyer (Bianca Kajlich), but the movie ends with a badly-burned Michael waking up in a morgue to seemingly kill again.

With the sequel debuting in theaters later this month, Green has started giving numerous interviews about the development of Halloween Kills. During a recent Q&A for the film at Beyond Fest (via Comicbook), Green responded to a fan question about Easter eggs and noted that he joked about bringing back Busta Rhymes. Green said:

I literally said to [VP of Development at Blumhouse Productions] Ryan Turek the other day, 'Should Busta Rhymes be in the next one? This one, I think, was full of a lot of that fan fulfillment for me, in so many ways. The next one, I'm trying to think, I think there's some little tidbits. But it's nothing overt or excitingly realized. It's kind of a wash of the world that we've established here. And then some new faces and voices that take center stage, alongside.

While Green does seem to be joking about bringing back Busta Rhymes as Freddie Harris, the above comments do shed some insight into where his mind is at for fan service in his Halloween movies. This explains the move to bring back characters like Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall) and Lindsay Wallace (Kyle Richards). Green clearly wants to move the franchise forward, but he also is focusing on re-incorporating small details from throughout the Halloween franchise to blend old and new. This means Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends will both likely feature plenty of fan service.

Though it may seem like a weird move to bring back Busta Rhymes for a Halloween sequel, it’s worth remembering how much the Halloween franchise has reclaimed in recent years. With Halloween Kills utilizing the Silver Shamrock masks from Halloween III: Season of the Witch, it’s clear that elements from films that were once maligned can be re-imagined and re-used in later movies. It doesn’t necessarily seem likely that Busta Rhymes will return for a future Halloween film, but audiences can see all the fan service that did make the cut when Halloween Kills debuts in theaters and on Peacock on October 15.
